Albanese firmly stands up to Trump by vowing that the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme is NOT negotiable and cannot be bargained with in Trump's trade war.
Basically: Trump is imposing tariffs all over the place to drive prices up, reduce how much other countries export, and use that economic wrecking ball as a negotiating tactic to force Trump's corporate interests on others.
Big pharmaceutical companies in the US don't like that the PBS requires them to negotiate on price, thus reducing the cost of medicines for Australian by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. So, those companies would like Trump to slap Australia with a bunch of tariffs and then use that as leverage to undermine and erode the PBS.
Labor has promised to reduce the maximum cost of PBS listed medication from $30 to $25 if re-elected. Labor previously in 2023 reduced it from $42.50 to $30.
Labor's cost of living relief measures of reducing medicines by up to 40% over the course of a few years is such an obvious good idea that even Peter Dutton, to his limited credit, has promised to do the same and also promised that the PBS won't be a bargaining chip in negotiations over US tariffs. In a plot twist: Dutton wants to also stand up against Trump and be united with Albo but this does mean Dutton's only good policies are the ones he's copying directly from Labor press conferences.
So yay! Some positive news! Albo has a spine AND we'll be getting cheaper medicine, whether Trump fucking likes it or not.
