Essay Outline
ESSAY TITLE:
The future of illustration: An artists role in the mental health awareness movement
The future of illustration: the use of art and it’s social impact on the mental health awareness movement
STRUCTURE:
Introduction:
Brief overview of social media, social media, statistics of social media use, how people are most commonly interfacing with social media – smart phones
Gifs, tiktok videos – short and to the point.
Illustrators use social media to gain more clients and followers- social media is a valuable asset to an illustrator in a growing digital world.
Aims of research: what is an illustrator’s role in mental health awareness?
Is the work of illustrators beneficial to the mental health awareness campaign?
Do illustrated social media posts create better engagement vs unillustrated posts in a digital world of selfies, clickbait, adverts and quick ever-changing trends.
Asking popular mental health social media pages questions on the matter
Cancel culture and companies “jumping on the bandwagon”, moral stance
Analytics and research on post engagements (illustrated vs text)
Image content research – common visual themes, popular styles, colours, characters. Consider these elements when creating comparison between illustrated vs text posts
Section 1:
The online illustrator
Popular social medias which are used today that have an emphasis on visual communication through imagery:
Tumblr
Instagram
Apps
Facebook
Podcasts
@thedepressionproject, sad ghost club, creative peptalk. (a brief description of each, include images and the aims/purpose of these pages.)
Accessability
Online magazines
Analytics of social media use, digital art formatted for social media – is traditional uncommon?
Section 2:
Illustration and Morality
Self-indicated illustrator’s vs content creators hired by social media pages.
Gemma Correll, creative pep talk, the sad ghost club – what is their reach vs a more business driven page or organization, how are there pages found? Are they easy to find? Instagram algorithms hindering artist reach?
Organizations and businesses affording to pay for post promotion – primary research, my own experience.
Lip service – do these pages have genuine concern for the awareness of mental health, or are they driven by likes and follower growth.
Could illustrators be detrimental to the movement without realizing? – working for pages with the wrong intentions.
Social media movements, world mental health day, black lives matter, etc. Could ill-intended artists or pages “hop on the bandwagon” just to generate growth?
Is there any incidents like this that have been documented?
Is mental health used as a marketing tool on social media? Following trends, advertising products such as mental health books, expensive subscription services such as betterhelp.
Too much advertising on social media, is there enough promotion of mental health self-help resources?
How does an illustrator navigate the social and ethical concerns of working for a private client vs being self-indicated?
Section 3:
The visual language of Mental Health awareness
The reach and engagement of posts with illustrations vs text posts.
Include short q&a with @thedepressionproject
Image, colour, symbols, characters – how do these factors this effect engagement.
Research on visual language that catches the eye, how humans react more empathetically to character-based drawings.
Common styles, and possible over saturation of styles. How can an illustrator stand out amongst others.
Analytics of illustrated vs text based.
Tradtional illustrations of the past around mental health. Taboo subject. Their way of working, paper, screen print, early digital software, pixel art.
How a modern illustrator works, digital software, emails, video calls with clients, access through smart phones to information, news and trends.
Looking to the future : how will styles grow based on past trends, smart phones with drawing software – digital art more accessible for creatives, VR, 360 environments, social media’s imposing presence in our lives – wearable tech, google glass, smart watches, facebook check-ins, marketing. Creates more space for art, larger number of people interfacing and creating, broader range of style.

This instagram page is really good for information on mental health, coping strategies, and awareness. I found that they sell self-help books. However, I cannot find the name of their illustrator. This week I would like to write to them and ask for more information on their illustrations, and about how they use social media to spread their message.
