Haru Dipthong's Utena Fansub Masterpost

On the 23rd of September 2024, @dontbe-lasanya and I began a project to retranslate the anime Revolutionary Girl Utena. The project finished on the 7th of August 2025. The goals behind the project were to provide more natural dialogue between characters, do a better job of conveying the themes, and provide a nonbinary perspective on Utena the character, and I believe we achieved them!

To summarise my translation approach in one sentence, I would say I focus on rewriting the script as though it were originally written in the target language. This means, for example, never using honorifics like "sama" or "senpai" in the English translation and instead making up for it by using ways of indicating relationships and hierarchy in English such as changing the way characters speak around each other.

saw someone on twt reference dwarfism or chronic illness in general to discuss claudia's romance w madeleine and it was so astute and my mind keeps expanding that to a disability reading of her life and wrow... that she was gravely ill when louis had her and even though lestat was able to save her and mitigate the suffering, the disability would follow her the rest of her life. the way that she couldn't have been saved at the hospital bc of the race riots also speaking to the base inequity that black disabled ppl face bc of systemic racism in healthcare combining with ableism. the resentment in 104 that her parents cursed her to this diminished existence even though the choices were her dying or this life. her desperate pursuit of knowledge to know that she isn't the only one like this, that there isn't something inherently wrong with her, that the issue is society, but she's relegated to hiding in the shadows and minimizing her presence in order to do so. how being a disabled black woman placed her at 3x the risk of sexual assault. how there's also a disabled reading of louis and and how the impact of his disability escalates while claudia's finally learning to navigate hers, how louis having a hidden disability in contrast to claudia's visible disability affects how they navigate it, how louis doesn't believe there's any way around this except to institutionalize himself but claudia not only refuses this but goes to live freely having found LOVE, having found someone who takes her disability seriously and doesn't try to pretend it doesn't exist but doesn't treat her differently bc of it (the original twt also pointed out how madeleine doesn't start flirting w her until after claudia says it was stunted growth bc of the war iirc). the way that black ppl and women and of course black women are at heightened risk of forcible involuntary institutionalization and persecution in the form of the trial... UGHHGGHGHHGGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHHHHHHH man right down to how in the book claudia kills lestat just for having her and it's all based on anne rice's daughter having a terminal illness wallahi this is just so............
