Publishers have to make a profit to keep books on the shelves. Retailers have to make a profit for the same. So the diversity conversation, by its very nature as a change in the industry, has to take into account economics and capitalism in addition to everything else.

Impel launched its first Marvel Universe Trading Card series in 1990 with a set of 162 cards that included Heroes, Villains, Rookies, Teams, Greatest Battles, and other Marvel goodness. The cards featured new artwork by a who’s who of talents from Marvel’s Bullpen along with key facts, figures and trivia on the back of each card. The cards above with team members from Excalibur, X-Factor and the X-Men were among my favorites and represent a great time stamp to the state of those characters and teams circa 1990.
