November 8th. 11-4pm. Abbotsford Convent. The Bishop's Parlour.
As part of Abbotsford Convent’s Open Spaces
RE::SET is a collective formed out of the desire to explore the possibilities of public sound activities and the creation of SONIC EXPERIENCES. Drawn together by the multiplicity of ideas raised by site-specifics practise, RE::SET have presented works exploring various processes and methods in divergent locations such as galleries, park lands, domestic settings and a train line. Each event has seen a varying arrangement of organisers and performers working together to create multi disciplinary sound focused situations.
RE::SET: The Bishop's Parlour sees a collection of local artists come together to arrange and present both performative and compositional sound works, for your auditory incitement.
November 8th. 11-4pm. Abbotsford Convent. The Bishop's Parlour.

re::set Laughing Waters
Domestic enclave in a state forest: connection and disconnection inside and out of the mud brick, timber and boulder constructed environment that bleeds into the bushland. Eleven artists make sonic/physical interactions with Birrarung House and its surrounds. The invitation to the audience is a social offering: for a collective venturing to the fringe.

A guided event along the banks of the Merri Creek that invites artists to contemplate the sonic, spacial and contextual qualities of this urban wilderness. With its pre-colonial and industrial history, its ruins, rocks and rubbish, Re::Set Merri Creek is an homage to forgotten corners. A bridging of worlds. A bridging of time. Resonant spaces. Thrum
Hum along with the train transformer and sunset birds.
Investigate the buzzing sound of the transformer in the yard of the substation at the intersection of the Upfield bike path and Park St. This unit supplies power to the trains and as they pass you can hear the moving electrical loads varying the harmonic overtones of the 50Hz buzz.

Resonant Ruins
Resonant Ruins is a site-specific video installation that aims to create a temporary archeological site of suburban antiquity. Working with the metallic materials found around the Upfield train line, with a focus upon the disused and obsolete, I will create a sonic composition and video work illuminating and animating these inanimate metal objects alluding to an imagined and mythologised former life they may have had. This work will then be played back live in the site it was filmed in. Resonant Ruins looks at the value placed upon raw materials through out the varied forms they take during their life cycles, the temporal nature of our own existence and the remnants we leave behind.

Jewell Portal
Transportation, transfer, and travel come in many forms.
The title of this project refers to the site of Upfield bike path as a means of transportation not merely across space but also into another dimension.
The portal sequence uses very simple and stylised graphic animation in a predominantly black and white palette. This conditional illusion contrasts against the external environment and further adds humour to the experience of the work.

Reading The Birds
I will be reading The Birds, the original short story by Daphne du Maurier, under the large tree just south of Glenlyon Road on the Upfield bike track where hundreds of common mynas and starlings settle loudly for the night.
The story is a tale of nature’s revenge, where birds start attacking people. While dated in writing style and tone, the story powerfully retains its nightmarish quality in particular as the environmental crisis that the birds’ actions symbolize remains highly pertinent today. The birds are particularly vocal at dusk as they settle for the night.

Bridge
Bridge the hums, clicks, calls, contemplative phrases, states and pathways of transitions.
Alice is a vocal performer who works with sounds outside of language and melody. During her live performance on the bike path, her sound responds to the sonic hums, clicks and calls in the local urban and natural soundscape; contemplative phrases in human’s vocal interactions; and the internal states of the transitioning pathway we are in. Alice engages with audience members through her eye contact, physical responses in posture and movement, trajectory of sound, and intimacy of communication.

Arc de Brunswick (a spangle of aesthetic experience)
While some say a life consists of a handful of significant events, others see a singularity of entrance and final exit. Upon this journey, some recommend you to smell the roses; others counsel to keep your eyes on the prize. Perhaps once in a lifetime there arises a perfect moment of choice which reframes all that comes before and all that follows.

Commuters
This work reimagines Anstey Station as a surreal and dangerous place. Peek in to see a miniaturised tableau that transports you to an alternate world. Who’s on the train today? Maybe you should have ridden your bike…

The view from up here...
Did a final 'reccie' to take a look at sites for Trainspotters INC next Friday. This is the view from the train over pass where Alice Hui-Sheng Chang will be performing 3 sets next Friday 31st October (7pm, 8pm & 9pm).
You can hear the people splashing in the pool, the cyclists ringing their bells and the wind through the train lines. Beautiful....
