Grateful.
I know I’ve already expressed this a few times, but I want to take a moment to reflect on how appreciative I am of everyone who participates in my research. I have now conducted two studies by recruiting from tumblr, and the data that I have gathered has been absolutely unmatched. I recognize that it is a privilege to be in the position to handle data about such a sensitive topic, and I do not take that lightly. I vow to self-reflect, to maintain an open and collaborative relationship with all who participate. To be an ethical scientist is to respect the stories that are shared with you, so my inbox will always remain open to concerns or questions. As I am now approaching the completion of my PhD, I know my responsibilities will become larger, and I accept those with gentle hands.
The first time I experienced medical gaslighting, sitting in that cold exam room and feeling like the smallest person in the world, so lost and confused — I knew that something had to be done to fix this multi-headed ghoul that plagues our healthcare system. I pledged then, and I continue to pledge, to fight for better patient-provider interactions. Medical gaslighting KILLS. With every study, every contribution from one of you, we all push back against this monster. We all advocate for something better, something effective and equitable.
From my heart — thank you. This work is so important to me. I will continue to push forward, current administration be damned.

Final update on survey for now:
I’m sending out gift cards today, tomorrow, and Friday! I really appreciate your patience, it’s just little old me typing in emails 😅 and again, if you are part of the handful of people who ran into the issue where the survey booted you before you could enter your email, please let me know!

Hey guys -
Please please, if the survey kicked you out when you had already given your responses, LET ME KNOW. Please, seriously, DM me here. I want to make sure that you are compensated. I know this happened to a handful of people, but there is no way for me to know who those people are as the survey is anonymous. I feel terrible that a few people got kicked by the quota, and I want to make it right.
REGARDING SURVEY — PLEASE READ
My medical gaslighting survey has now closed as I have reached my budget ceiling. Trust me, I wish desperately that I had more funding and the ability to allow more people to share their stories. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to ALL who shared, reposted, and filled out my survey. If you did not get a chance to do so, please understand: this will be my life’s work. There will be more, as this is only my dissertation. I can’t wait to share my results with all of you.
I apologize for those who had the survey close on them or not record their responses. The form received a large influx of responses tonight, causing the quota to trigger a stoppage before some people were able to submit their answers (as I could not afford to pay more people). If you would still like to share your story, my DM is open (as a human being and friend, not as a scientist).
Again, thank you. And again, I hope to include more people in the future, budget-willing.

Paid Medical Gaslighting Survey!
Hey y'all! If you...
Are over the age of 18
Currently live in the U.S.
Have 10 minutes and want a $10 gift card
...then please consider taking my survey! For my PhD dissertation, I'm looking at how people WITH vs people WITHOUT chronic illnesses (such as POTS, endometriosis, fibromyalgia) are treated by healthcare providers. With this work, I hope to create a measurable scale for medical gaslighting so that it can be recognized and addressed.
If you're over 18 and live in the U.S., you most likely qualify whether you have a chronic illness or not! This is an IRB-approved study, so all info can be found by clicking the link below. Reblogs also help! Thank you!

well yeah i have a pet hydra and it only has one head. i'm not going to cut its head off just to make it look cooler, you asshole. that's seriously unethical. and i'm not letting you cut its head off either. if you really want a hydra with multiple heads, you should go for a rescue- but if you want your pet to look cooler at the cost of its physical health, maybe you shouldn't get any kind of pet at all. no, the hydra's not for guarding my evil tower, it's my pet. have you ever heard of a pet? like a puppy or a kitty? you think i can't defend my evil tower by my self?

i’ve started looking at weight and health the way i look at class and income and it really puts a lot of things into a new perspective.
let me explain: in america at least, the lower class have significantly worse health outcomes, even when accounting for other factors. just being poor is enough to make your overall health worse. we don’t know that being fat makes your health directly worse, like the data just isn’t there, but for a moment, pretend it does.
imagine going to the doctor with a health problem and the doctor looking at your chart and saying well, this problem will be less severe if you go up an income bracket. have you thought about becoming rich? it would really help. start by saving a little money every month.
ridiculous, right?? very few people successfully go from working class to rich, it just doesn’t happen on a large scale in society. maybe for a time you pick up some overtime hours, spend a little beyond your means, and appear rich. but eventually you burn out, your car needs to be repaired, and you return to being working class.
we do have this data: only some people can successfully lose large amounts of weight, and only a tiny fraction of people who lose that weight actually keep it off for more than a year. telling people to lose weight for their health is just absurd because they almost certainly can’t do it any more than they can double their income for their health.
and yet i see it everywhere. a little poster in my work breakroom tells me to improve my blood pressure by losing weight! a psa on the radio says you need to take care of your heart by losing weight! we can’t even conclusively prove that weight is the cause rather than just correlated with a lot of these problems but here it is offered anyway: have you tried being rich?

My mother heard a voice when I was nine. Like my brother, speaking to her from the hall.
My brother was not in the hall. He wasn’t home at all; he was out at the community college in one of the classes he took over the course of that summer. After the voice, my mother was out of sorts and antsy all afternoon, but I didn’t understand why until my brother finally came home and she looked relieved. She told him what had happened, and she joked that in stories, when something like that happens, it is because the person you think you are hearing has died.
Sometimes I think, what if he did die? Not what if he had, not what if he would, but what if he did die? What if my brother didn’t come home that day? Surely he didn’t. My brother would never do the things that man grew up to do. My brother went to class one summer morning, and something else came home in his place. I hope my brother, wherever he is–in heaven or still in that hallways, calling out to our mother–forgives me, forgives all of us for thinking that could be him and talking this long to grieve.
