in both CQL and MDZS, one of my favorite comedic moments is the part where wei wuxian plays his flute so horribly that it awakens an unconscious lan qiren and makes him pass out again XD

Lan Wangji and Lying

i'm rewatching some moments so let me talk about something. one of the best Wangxian Yiling Date moments is that when they first meet at yiling, lwj says he is here for nighthunting. then during the meal when wwx asks what specifically he came to yiling for and if he could show him around, lwj makes this face

lan cannot-come-up-with-a-single-lie wangji just looks down guiltily and wwx immediately catches his earlier lie and it's just delightful. this is one of the few moments lwj looks actually abashed. it's so adorable.

we often think that lwj doesn't lie (and i am guilty of this too) when in reality he does not show much hesitation in lying when the situation calls for it. he calls wwx boring to his face several times in the beginning when it is clear that lwj is extremely intrigued by wwx from the very start. he lies to lxc straight up when lxc asks him if he is worried about wwx and he just replies no (while his entire being SCREAMS worry and concern for his wei ying). the first thing he says when wwx asks him why he is in yiling is "nighthunt" almost as if he has practised this lie. no, it's not that lwj never lies (although he does prefer to stay silent than lie) it is that he is BAD at lying. he is BAD at hiding how he really feels, ironically enough for someone known to express very little. he hides best when he doesn't say anything and he knows that. but sometimes he has to lie. and in this particular moment wwx catches him minutes into their date meal when lwj looks away guiltily.
