I think I really like the new illustrations of Mai and Naru. Feel like the manga has a younger style for them both (a bit jarring sometimes because they look so young at times esp Naru lol) while the novels are more mature.

The anime has the best balance tho that I think really fit both of them. Really kudos to the character designer.

In volume 8, there’s this bit where Mai was rolled off the futon by Bou-san & he called her being inappropriate for a young woman because she was probably sprawled on the floor exposed & Yasuhara & John were blushing jcjvhjm😭😭😭

I just can’t imagine how many times Naru and Lin must have seen her like that tho because they don’t usually call the others until they’re done with preliminary investigations. Lmao can you imagine Naru having to cover her w/ a blanket every time because she kicked it while sleeping at the base? Lin might have just bolted or pretended he saw nothing jchchgjvi

The two of them probably so used to her sleeping habits jvhhhvhg

Almost forgot I made a Howl’s Moving Castle x Ghost Hunt AU ffic lol Another fic I need to finish, seriously TT

So instead of Mai-Sophie turning old, she turns younger. I thought it was just more fitting somehow. Naru is also not a wizard but an “enchanter.” This term is actually based on Diana Wynne Jones’ other series, Chrestomanci XD But also, Naru dabbled in other things in the AU, so he’s not just an enchanter.

I remember a review saying how Naru’s not as powerful as Howl, but I’m just thinking that the spell on Mai is very strong. Specifically, it has many layers, which has to be peeled back before Naru notices 🤭

There’s moments in Akumu no sumu ie where it seems Mai is flirting with Naru but it’s so subtle that it’s unnoticeable.

One is when she calls him fussy in front of Midori-san, their client. It’s the way she was literally bragging about naming him as Naru for narcissist & when he shows up, she’s like, don’t I know him down to a T? When she calls him fussy Jchcvchvv

Second is when Naru was explaining about electrical wiring & Naru questions what Mai learned at school when she asked about amperes(?) & she suddenly talked about girls being weak at electricity WHICH IS SO FUNNY BECAUSE IT’S LIKE A CALLBACK TO WHEN NARU ELECTRIFIED HER WITH PK ENERGY against a driftwood god before hfhggghghfjcvcv And Naru just explained, not dignifying an answer or even refuting her statement ICHTFVGJVIGJ

Also funny was that when they were arguing about monkey & him plunging into work straight from the airport etc., Naru suddenly mentioned about Mai measuring the floor like… Boy, you want her to get on the floor all of a sudden??? 🤣And yeah she forgot to do it, but that felt like such a non sequitur somehow but still consistent to their argument hchchggvg

Naru is such a funny contradiction when it comes to Mai. I think you see it especially during Forgotten Children case. This boy goes shouting to have Mai stay put as well as the children (not go off alone), but if it’s others like Masako or John being left with a child or the children, he’s all *crickets*🤐🤐🤐🤐 KENRIEJJD WHEN HE KNOWS MAI CAN FIGHT ALREADY BY THEN.

And then when Mai purified the place perfectly, he’s just passing by, “Thanks for the hard work.” AS THOUGH HE WASN’T PANICKING MOMENTS BEFORE AND HOLDING HER HAND MAKING SURE HE’S WITH HER LIKE BOOOOOOYYY YOU TSUN TSUN TSUNDERE YOU

He’s so jejejjsjdiijdiid

ALSO ALSO it’s just funny how he’s usually unflappable but then Mai comes into the scene or gets herself in trouble or plunges herself into trouble AND HE’S PANICKING SLASH SQUARING UP BUNGEE JUMPS ON HER BACK LIKE HE’S SUPERMAN when that ceiling’s about to fall at Yasuhara’s school and we’re all here just

And then he just acts like it was NOTHING. “No biggie! I just had a ceiling bump my back like it’s marshmallow. Totally did not panic” Naru dijdjsjhsjh

And yeah during Akumu no sumu ie, he couldn’t move for some time due to vision, but then Mai screams & the room she’s in is probably already crowded but he comes in anyway, all calm, “What’s wrong? I totally did not just see a dead boy’s memory it made me nauseous but I came here in an instant forgetting the nausea” Naru

I just remember all these things he does, & it’s just… man, this boy is so not honest to himself & to others. His actions definitely speak louder than his tongue can work out that barb lmao

Thinking about Naru and Mai again and I just like how Naru can be soft when it comes to Mai. He would admonish Mai about endangering herself, but then he’s the same—always endangering himself for her without thinking twice.

Ahhh my heart for these two idiots 😭😭😭

I just think it’s so sad when the first series ended with Mai saying 「一人でも恋はできるから」

It translates to “You can fall in love even all alone” but it can also be translated as “Love grows even when you’re alone.” Because Mai’s love is doubly tragic. Not only the person she loves is way way gone. He also doesn’t really return her feelings🥺😔

Still can’t get over the Pet Coin scene because while I was translating that scene, I had to take breaks because NARU WAS MAKING ME GIGGLE & BLUSH SO MUCH AT HOW MUCH HE WAS FLIRTING LIKE THAT SCENE WAS CHRISTMAS TO ME HE WAS SMILING SMILING CRACKING JOKES TO MAI SAYING SOMETHING LIKE:

“This child can teleport too” ABOUT A 500 yen coin

AND ITS JUST AAAAAH MY OTP

The best thing about it is just how it reinforces that Mai brings out the inner child in Naru so often & I JUST LOVE THAT. How he can be so comfortable with her to show that side of him. How he can be so goofy & have fun too. I just love their relationship so much😭
