There is no mistaking what is captured as plain as day on that photograph of them dancing at the wedding reception: their gazes and smiles intimate, the faint blush on her cheeks, and the way he stares down at her like she is the most precious thing to exist. “You, Hatake Kakashi, are in love with me,” she accuses, stabbing his chest with a finger.

He catches her hand to give it a sweet kiss before tugging her into the circle of his arms. “And you are in love with me,” he rebukes easily, gesturing to the shy rendition of her face.

Summary: She existed as the reality of his atonement. Around him, her smiles were fewer, her joys similarly absent. The guilt that suffocated him begged a single question: how would he repent to the heart of someone he tried to kill… twice?

Excerpt:

Suffocating remorse pricked its way up his spine and constricted across his chest, suddenly making it hard to breathe. "Sakura… we can forego weapons," he conceded eventually. Sasuke turned away unthinkingly, intending to set the weapon aside. He made it all but a few steps before the hairs on the back of his neck rose in alarm. A charge of footfalls rushed him in an instant. Acting upon mere instinct, Sasuke spun around, blocking the kunai Sakura intently aimed for his throat.

The clash of metal on metal echoed piercingly, reverberating against the trees, leaves, the infinite blades of grass at their feet, and the swaying branches around them. She was so close . He could smell her—something floral and delicate. He could feel the ghost of her breath—warm and skin-prickling. He could see the severity etched into each plane of her face—resentment intense and patent, her eyes wild and fierce. In a match of strength, her weapon barely grazed his neck before Sakura fell back only to rush him again.
