What is Nana's deal in Wanderstop?

Spoilers for Wanderstop, deals with major characters. Go play the game and come back here cuz I love you Nana but I have THOUGHTS (loving)

I was thinking about Wanderstop and and I couldn’t stop thinking about one detail: that Nana, like Boro, is special to this forest and is some kind of mainstay there. Unlike every other customer to the tea shop, Nana doesn’t seem to have any character change or growth, never goes silent on Alta, and she returns to the clearing after leaving. She is also aware of how the forest is bending around Alta, an insight that only Boro and Alta herself are aware of. Since most of the characters in the story are made to compliment Alta in some way, what exactly is Nana’s part in that and why is she so special? Firstly, we gotta talk about Alta.

Alta’s character arc revolves around her need for control, which for her takes the form of fighting prowess. Her initial motivation in the story is to recover from her malaise so she can fight again. She laments her weakness and we discover through her meditations that she scorns her father for getting laid off and for being a weakling. Her golden self reinforces this, needing Alta to become strong enough that she can defeat anyone, forever. The moment Alta suggests slowing down, her golden self becomes scared and paranoid that something will tear them both to pieces.

As long as Alta can fight, she is in control. As long as she is in control, nothing can hurt her. Of course, this is not how the world works. 

You can play your cards perfectly and still lose. So when Alta does finally lose and lose hard, she believes that she has lost control and is open to harm. Her arc is about finding some way to accept her loss of control without falling apart, and Boro is her first step towards this.

Boro acts as a foil for Alta. He is completely at peace and come rain or shine he would help you on your feet and ask if you would like some tea. He is not perfect and has sadness and regrets but he has long since accepted them into himself and moved past them. Boro is incredibly stable as he wants for nothing and has no inner turmoil that he needs resolving. As a backstop for Alta’s self-destruction and a constant force pushing Alta to self-improvement, Boro is most excellent! But he also lacks some things that Alta needs help resolving, namely, an ego and ambition. 

Enter Nana!

Nana is a crotchety old woman who styles herself as a savvy entrepreneur. She is arrogant, looking down on Alta and the tea shop, and constantly talking up her abilities as a businesswoman. She is infuriated if Alta ever shows kindness to her or if it is ever implied she is a good person. She is also quietly, secretly, quite generous. She never charges Alta for any of her wares, instead giving away occasional items in the guise of barters and trades. Additionally, she seems to have a soft spot for children and has some insight into their behaviour. She worries that Monster might need some direction in her life and demands Alta give Monster some guidance since Monster will only listen to Alta.

Nana’s personality, I believe, is meant to be one possible synthesis of Alta’s need for control with the need to relinquish control. Nana talks a big game about profits and business, claiming to be the top of the pack but it’s just a facade. In the clearing she makes zero sales of monetary value. She even gives away some items as a reward to Alta for taking care of Monster. Her ego is the first thing anyone sees and she is happy to hoard the conversation, but she also doesn’t let her ego get in the way of her connections.

I think Nana is special because unlike the other customers Nana’s personality is stable like Boro’s is. While Boro’s stability comes from accepting the good and bad as they come, Nana’s stability comes from a balance of needs. She is not searching for meaning or purpose, she doesn’t have inner turmoil, she has a massive ego but it is tempered by her kind actions. While I don’t think Alta should become as egotistical or mean as Nana, I do think that she provides a possible way that Alta can resolve her own ego and need for control.
