Caravaggio
Rest on the Flight into Egypt
1595 - 1596
Galleria Doria Pamphilj
Rome Italy
It is suggested that this Caravaggio was painted during his stay at the home of Fantino Perrignani, who was among his protectors when he arrived in Rome.
The scene depicts the Holy Family while on the way to Egypt, the Virgin with Child, who has fallen asleep, Saint Joseph who is dressed in a monk’s cassock holding a sheet of music, with an angel facing him playing a violin. In the background, the face of the donkey who is accompanying them. The lush vegetation of a laurel plant symbolizes eternity and virginity, the grass below with a mullein plant that symbolizes death.

Caravaggio
Saint John the Baptist
1601 - 1602
Rome Italy
This painting was given by the Mattei family to Cardinal Del Monte, from their inventory in 1627, then was sold to the Pio family in 1628. This Caravaggio is considered to be a very high quality copy of the original and it depicts a mythical interpretation linked to the star sign of Aries. It is a nude of a curly haired boy lying on animal pelts and holding onto a white ram. True vegetation by his feet is a great mullein plant, symbolizing death and resurrection. The white leaves in the background symbolize eternal life, a theme of opposition between youth and violent sacrifice.

JUDITH BEHEADING HOLOFERNES 1599
CARAVAGGIO
This vivid Caravaggio is believed to have been commissioned for the Signori Costi and was mentioned in the will of Ottavio Costa, having large letters COC on the back fo the canvas presumably “Comites Ottavio Costa’.
Judith seduces and beheads the enemy Holofernes, becoming the hero to save her city. Judith is a delicate, fine beauty with her bright white blouse and angelic face. The old woman steps up with her bag to take the head of the evil Holofernes as blood gushes from his neck and shock shows on his dying face.
The vivid colors of red and white within this painting and its masterful detail make this a favorite Caravaggio.

Caravaggio
Saint Francis in Meditation
1606
Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica di Palazzo Barberini
National Gallery of Ancient Art in Barberini Palace
Rome Italy
Saint Francis is looking at a skull that holds in his hands, an emblem of death. He’s dressed in a ragged cassock, his intelligent face showing moral greatness. The patch and rip on his shoulder symbolizes Christ’s sixth wound caused by the weight of the cross.
For years this painting Caravaggio was not known to be the artist.
