Social Problems
10 posts
This semester I took a class entitled "Social Problems: Reproduction and Inequalities." I really did not know what to expect with this class; however, I am happy I took it and feel more enlightened to issues in our society. I am hoping with this board to bring the main issues we discussed to your screen as well.

I hope that by reading through and seeing my posts I hope you have a better understanding of the social problems that are plaguing our society. This was a chance to inform more people on some of the main issues we discussed throughout this semester in my class and helped me develop a sense of understanding and create opinions. By doing so I hope you can create your own opinions in a sense to help stop or solve some of the issues in our society today.

Throughout this class we also discussed motherhood and what someone would do if they had trouble conceiving their own child. One way that came up the most was IUI and IVF treatments in order to increase a women’s chance at conceiving a child biologically. Women who couldn’t conceive naturally said that they always felt as though something was “wrong” with them or as if they weren’t “women enough.” By including this article I am sharing with you guys what women everywhere go through and the mental and financial strain this can put on some people; but also show that because of the exhausting costs IVF or IUI is not an option for most women because it is not available to all women exemplifying another way classism is shown in our healthcare system.

Abortion people, we all knew this issue was going to come up on this blog eventually. Abortion laws and recently selective abortion laws have taken over the news cycles.

There are 2 strategies when it comes to natalism. One of the strategies is called Pro-natalism which believes that we as a society need to start to procreating at a higher level than we are now because if not, “the economy will suffer.” I chose this article to share with you because throughout the entirety of this article the element of sexism, blaming, and shaming are very evident strategies employed by the pro-natalist writing it. They are blaming women for focusing on their careers and “wasting” their child-bearing years to focus on them. Finally, racism came into play, showing anti-natalist strategies as well because they are discouraging the growth of a specific population, as one author finally pointed out how this movement is just in hopes of regrowing the “white-baby” population because the white population is depleting at an astonishing rate.

One large issue we discussed in detail throughout this class is racism. One may not think that racism and healthcare are very connected ideas but they are, which has created a social problem. Throughout this article they focus on how structural racism has caused a divide in the level of care people of color receive in this country. Primarily this article focuses on cancer and how African Americans go through the cancer treatments process and still have a higher mortality rate. Issues of racism and classism become increasingly evident in healthcare throughout this article.

What is Reproductive Justice?
Reproductive Justice has quickly taken over media attention as it is the complete make up of the mind, body, soul, politics, social and economic aspects needed in trying to achieve and protect women’s rights when it comes to their right to reproduce.

Quote
Moral panics are often centered around people who are marginalized in society due to their race or ethnicity, class, sexuality, nationality, or religion. As such, a moral panic often draws on known stereotypes and reinforces them.
