Episode 1018: Rebooted Robomi
Translator Notes:
If anyone is curious, “Spinny Stabby Drill” is called “Bore Gore Bit” in Japanese. Yup - Hallessena gives things silly names there, too! The English name is actually fairly clever - it’s nicely alliterative, uses more natural-sounding language, and also maintains the same threatening connotations of “it creates holes in both walls and organic things”.
Also, since Japanese kanji characters are ideographic, meaning that the characters represent an idea rather than a syllable, her weapon also has a Japanese written name that would be pronounced differently from “Bore Gore Bit”, which is 廻天拳. This would likely be pronounced kaiten-ken, which requires some explanation. By itself, this means “world-changing fist”, but the term kaiten has some extra connotations in Japanese culture - it was the name given to manned suicide torpedos used by the Japanese navy in World War II, similar to kamikaze, which literally means “divine wind” but has extra connotations of “suicide craft”. There’s really no way to meaningfully translate this into English without giving a treatise in Japanese linguistics and cultural history, so I can understand why the localizers didn’t bother attempting to bring this to the English script.

Episode 1017: Vyrnple Fools’
Translator Notes:
Go figure - I learned an English word while translating this Japanese comic! I had never heard of birdlime before, but this comic makes specific reference to it, so I figured I’d better leave it in. Also, fun fact: the pun with that and Vyrn’s name works in both languages. The Japanese word for birdlime is torimochi, and Vyrn’s Japanese name is Bi, so the pun in Japanese is tobimochi, which works in the exact same way. Neat!

Grand Blues 997 Sandalphon Again
[After arriving at Canaan, the crew meets a Sandalphon who has given up on everything and secluded himself in a mysterious world.] Lyria: “Please! Let’s leave this place and go save Lucifer-san together!” Angel of Vengeance, Sandalphon: “The Supreme Archangel…? No… someone like me would never be able to be of help to him.”
Sa: “Because my power… doesn’t even so much as reach the level of his feet, you see.” Ly: “That’s…!? You wanted to be of use to Lucifer-san, didn’t you!?” Vy: “So this guy’s stiiill all messed up over how Lucifer feels, huh?“ Vy: “That’ so lame, Sandalphon!”
Sa: “Shut up! What would you know about it!?” Sa: “There’s an unimaginable gap between Lucifer and I!” Vy: “What do you think, Meteon?” Meteon, who piloted the speed ship: “Hm? If there’s a gap, don’t you just have to close it?”
Me: “No matter who you are, when you first start out there’s a huge time gap between you and the leader.” Me: “But through practice, you can shrink that gap by one second, then another, and that ends up being fun itself.” Me: “If you’re a racer, even a kid would get it?” Sa: “Guh…!?”
Sa: “UWOOOOOOOOOH!! SHUT UUUUUUUUUUUUP!!!” SANDALGONE Me: “Ehh!?” Vy: Aw crap… for a guy like him who was forced to live his life as a backup… Vy: The words of someone like Meteon who shot straight for the top through effort alone is just too much…!

“Patty Jenkins worked really hard with her team to design a style of fighting that was incredibly badass, and believable. Where Batman will punch somebody in the face, and that’s effective, that’s not how the Amazons and Diana fight. They have a disciplined specialized, collaborative fighting style. They work together as a team, and leverage each other’s strengths. They are mighty, they are beautiful. And as the Germans learn, this new breed of badass warrior women are deadly.”

Bayard Rustin was an openly gay Black man who was Martin Luther King’s right hand man. He planned the Million Man March and was subject to scrutiny for his sexuality and deemed a “deviant” and “pervert”.
Bayard Rustin can be found in nearly every picture of MLK yet he has undoubtedly been erased from history. We have to fix that.

Let us march on ballot boxes, march on ballot boxes until race-baiters disappear from the political arena.
Let us march on ballot boxes until the salient misdeeds of bloodthirsty mobs will be transformed into the calculated good deeds of orderly citizens.
Let us march on ballot boxes until the Wallaces of our nation tremble away in silence.
Let us march on ballot boxes until we send to our city councils state legislatures, and the United States Congress, men who will not fear to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God.
Let us march on ballot boxes until brotherhood becomes more than a meaningless word in an opening prayer, but the order of the day on every legislative agenda.
Let us march on ballot boxes until all over Alabama God’s children will be able to walk the earth in decency and honor.
These words come from the speech delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the conclusion of the 1965 march to Montgomery, Alabama. The march brought national attention to the issue of racial discrimination in voting. The Voting Rights Act, a landmark piece of Civil Rights legislation, became law just five months later.
Photographs, broadsides, and other materials related to Dr. King’s legacy are now on view in the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library reading room.
