Tell Me When You’re Sober- a Kerry/Susan one-shot

Kerry watched as the headlights from the cab lit up the first floor apartment, shining through the sheer curtains into the dark room. She could hear the rowdy laughter through the walls and wondered if Susan would even make it inside, pulling aside the curtain subtly to peer out and catching a glimpse of Susan as she fumbled with her keys at the front door. Kerry waited for the cab to pull away before moving toward the door and opening it, the blonde all but falling into her arms as she did so.

“Kerry,” Susan slurred emphatically, a smile plastered on her face. “You’re here.”

Kerry nodded, offering an arm for support as Susan moved into the apartment and shutting the door behind them.

“Yeah, I’ve been waiting for you. You said you’d be home by eleven.” Kerry tried not to sound too annoyed, but had she known that she’d spend most of her night alone she could have at least brought a medical journal or two to read.

“I’m sorry,” Susan turned suddenly in her direction, Kerry stepping back slightly as Susan stumbled into her. “We were gonna have a drink. And that turned into two drinks. And two became three, and you know how to count,” she giggled, and Kerry turned her head away, the smell of tequila on Susan’s breath threatening to raise her own blood alcohol level.

“Do you want some coffee?” Kerry suggested, parking Susan on the couch before beginning to move to the kitchen. She’d barely made it a step before Susan caught her hand, pulling her back toward her and down onto the couch, her crutch clattering to the floor.

“I just want you,” Susan held tightly to Kerry’s arm. “I wanted to talk about you all night, but I couldn’t.” Susan slurred, and Kerry’s heart raced momentarily, suddenly worried that Susan had disclosed their relationship to whomever she had been out with that night - Kerry assumed it had been Abby or Jing-Mei - before Susan’s words quelled her panic. “I wanted to tell them all about how soft you are,” Susan smiled, leaning into Kerry even as the redhead tried to create the slightest distance between them on the couch. “I wanted to tell them about how you snore. And how good of a kisser you are. And how happy you make me.” Susan reached over and kissed Kerry then, and Kerry couldn’t help but enjoy it, despite the taste of Susan’s night of drinking on her lips. “I can’t stop thinking about you.”

“Ookay,” Kerry laughed in spite of herself, gently pushing Susan back into the couch with a hand on each shoulder. “I’m going to get you some coffee.”

“Kerry Weaver,” Kerry could see her conscious attempt at opening her eyes wide enough to feign consciousness. “I love you.”

The redhead sighed. Not quite the way she had imagined they’d utter that particular phrase to each other. Kerry lifted her hand up and pushed a rogue strand of hair behind Susan’s ear.

“Tell me that when you’re sober.” She reached down for her crutch and brought herself to her feet, silently instructing Susan to stay on the couch by gently guiding her back into the cushions, and then moved to the kitchen to brew a pot of black coffee. By the time she returned, with Susan’s coffee in hand, the blonde was horizontal on the couch, hugging an orange accent pillow as she snored heavily against it.

“So much for your birthday dinner.” Kerry muttered, doing her best to bury the disappointment she felt as she covered Susan over with a blanket before returning to the kitchen to put away the meal she had made for them, no longer feeling very hungry anyway.
