I’m re-reading the Adventures of Will Darling Series by KJ Charles and I should have been highlighting all my favorite bits, but I’m starting now because I love these two so much.

Excerpt from the book Subtle Blood reads:

Will got up from his chair, walked round behind Kim, and put his hands on his shoulders, gripping them. “I told you. See? I told you she just needed time.”

Kim put his hand on Will’s, spreading his thin fingers over the hardened knuckles. “You can’t expect me to take your word for things when I could work myself into a frenzy about them instead. Where would that get us?”

“You might do something sensible.” Will squeezed his shoulders. “I’m bloody glad.”

I’m abandoning this project - turns out drawing is hard and not my passion, but I like how these turned out. It’s been forever since I even looked at these and I just wanted to put them SOMEWHERE before clearing space in my computer.

Re-reading House in the Cerulean Sea and collecting tidbits of foreshadowing for the Zoe reveal at the end of Somewhere Beyond the Sea…

Okay, I finished reading Somewhere Beyond The Sea (the sequel to House In The Cerulean Sea) and I liked it, but I have some thoughts about Miss Marblemaw :

- Why did she have a strange reaction when Arthur showed her his engagement ring? Was it because she saw his humanity? Something else?

- why can’t she feel fear? Is she magical? I really thought this was going to lead to some sort of plot line around fear in general. With David starting this discussion of fear and its benefits, I thought this would lead to some sort of character breakthrough with her.

- I don’t want her to have a redemption arc (she abused a child) but I did want to see something break between her and Rowling Rowder who was obviously treating her badly.

- just something about how she was so hot/cold was strange and I want to know what was up with her. Like they locked her in the guest house for an hour or more, and then they let her out and she’s mad for a sec but then like “yes on with the inspection”

Okay, I was seeing some discourse on whether House In The Cerulean Sea / Somewhere Beyond The Sea is set in the UK-ish or the USA-ish and I’ve been thinking about it and I’m weighing in!

I think it’s set in the UK-ish and here’s why:

(These are mostly examples from SBTS because I just finished that one)

- they take the train to the seaside. The train.

- The children make Linus breakfast for his birt that includes beans and mushrooms.

- Linus mentioned loosing a “stone”

- there were mentions of Prime Ministers

- there were mentions of kings of the past.

This concludes my list of evidence coming from a person who’s from the USA and is only noticing the bits that made me go “huh, sounds British”. I wonder if there are bits in there that would make a person from the UK go “huh, sounds American”

Just finished reading (listening to) The Bloodright Trilogy by Emily @skrutskie and it was SO FUN and I’m miffed!

That there isn’t more chatter about it here.

It’s one of those sci-fi/fantasy universes where queerness is a totally normal accepted thing.

The best-written trans man I’ve ever read. The fact that he’s trans doesn’t even come up because there are no outright sexy scenes (NUMEROUS innuendos and implied sexyness? Oh. Hell yah). I’m only sure he was from little snippets and my own experience being one.

It’s got roommates to lovers (omg they were ROOMMATES)

Super exciting action scenes.

Secret, covert plans within plans inside a plan sandwich.

Some really cute “we know we both like eachother but we shouldn’t be together, and now we have to pretend to be together but we aren’t, and now we have to pretend we’re NOT together but we are” shit without too much angst.

I love how the author wrote the characters. Everyone’s motives and thoughts and actions make complete sense given a character’s personality and history, and it’s an incredibly colorful cast.

There are some really excellent character arcs.

Really good fun sci-fi action adventure shit without getting too into hard sci-fi territory.

Politicking and plotting and strategizing.

A bit of graphic violence. Not gonna lie. Just a smidge.

Uhhhgggg someone please read these and come yell with me. The audio books were really good too. Well, the first was hands down one of the best audio books I’ve ever heard. The second was not as good. The third was good and had 4 different narrators. You can listen to them for free on Libby if you have a library card.

I feel so relieved that it’s obvious to other people how safe and wholesome The Two Princes Discord is. I was seriously questioning reality there for a moment.

you’re welcome! I love making ttp content and ttp memes too, and I have been silent on my discomfort with some aspects of the discord server/fandom overall for similar reasons. The Two Princes podcast is far from perfect, but one of the main reasons I fell in love with it was because of the main theme on how queer love is intrinsically good and powerful. I’ve made many a post discussing the nuances in the writing for both rumir and jecily and how many of the themes for both mirror the important foundational values every healthy relationship requires. I love the idea that these two kids can throw away the propaganda they’ve been fed and expectations on their shoulders and choose love. I was also incredibly impressed with the fact that such a blatantly queer podcast was greenlit with the target audience being children. If there had been something like this when I was in middle school, I would feel a lot more secure in my identity today. But I digress.

The argument has been had on tumblr a thousand times over on the intersection between adult content and children’s media, and I really don’t care to get into it again. But, as a minor, there have been some works in the fandom that have made me uncomfortable. It’s not that adult content was made for certain characters, it was the framing of such content and the syntax associated was very reminiscent of fetishized mlm content. In addition, there are certain circles of the fandom that are very adult-dominated, and, because of that, I have kept my distance from due to the language used in discussing relationships in the show. Of course, this is the Internet, and I have no authority to police the content others make. Yet, it has made me uncomfortable.

Because the fan base for this podcast is so small, and the sizes of such adult-dominated spaces are so large, I’ve been afraid to voice my concerns regarding the blatant sexualition and feminization of certain characters for adult pleasure. But, if this fandom were to ever gain a bigger following and include more minors, it’s a concern that needs addressing now. I have no urge to engage in tumblr drama with anyone about what I’ve discussed. But to pretend that it doesn’t exist will only serve to exclude future fans, queer or not.

In short, I’m glad you raised the concerns in your vent tag, because it’s made me feel less alone in having this issues with the fandom. I’m glad someone agrees that there is content that needs to be addressed.

I hesitate to add to this because I know I’m going to work myself up and I know that anyone who spends two seconds in the TTP fandom or in the Discord server know that it’s not some adult-ruled child-porn hellhole like Doge is trying to paint it. It’s mostly kids discussing what instruments the characters would play and who would knit and who would crochet and what would it be like if they had met when they were kids and their parents were all friends. I love the space we have to just play and imagine about the characters we love. I love how we fuel each other and create some incredible ideas together. I love how supportive everyone is. That’s probably why this one person’s rhetoric really knocks me back.

So I’m not going to come in here and make a huge argument about how our space is portrayed by this one person is wrong, because that would be a waste of time. Anyone who loves these characters should join us. It’s so fun.

This isn’t about The Two Princes. This is about art, and gatekeeping, and shaming, and feeling ashamed.

I want to let all the people reading this exchange and feeling ashamed of the things they like know that you’re okay. It’s okay to be a straight girl and enjoy mlm romances. It’s okay to be an adult and enjoy stories about teenagers. Hell, it’s okay to be an adult and like smutty stories about teenagers. That might ick some people out but honestly making and consuming art is how we make sense of OURSELVES, it doesn’t have anything to do with other people. If something speaks to you, explore it! I can’t think of a safer way to do that than through fan fic. Don’t let anyone make you feel ashamed for the feelings you have. We’re all humans trying to figure out how to be humans in this messy world.

And I’m sure we’re all aware that the thoughts in our head have nothing to do with the actions we take in real life. You can enjoy reading smut about fictional people who are different than you and go out into real life and interact with real people who fit that catagory and not be a creep. Because fictional people are different than real people.

I’d really like to come in here and list my qualifications for making these statements. Tell you a little bit about myself, my story, my gender, my age, what I do in real life, the kinds of people I’ve had real life experience loving and being loved by. But I agree with Jaque. It shouldn’t matter.

It is my firm belief that Hieronymus/Lord Chamberlain has been the single most important father figur in Rupert's life. This man watched Rupert grow up and understood along the way that they were similar. And I believe that despite the stress of working under Queen Lavinia (Cause as much as we love our queen, it was a really toxic work environment), he bared it and continued serving the royal family anyway.

He went through all that just so Rupert would have someone beside him who understood what he was going through. That one day the prince would have to make a choice like Hieronymus did all those years ago. Cause he knew about the prophecy and he knew that Rupert could not face whatever challenges the forest might have for the prince if he wasn't true to himself.

And I can only imagine what immense joy he must have felt to know that after 18 years, Rupert finally made his choice and stayed true to himself by marrying the love of his life despite what the world threw against him. That Rupert had the courage to love, changing the world they lived in forever.

What a good dad!
