UT spamtenna ("trash heap" AU) headcanons- the 'house'

yet more headcanons on undertale spamtenna, this time regarding their 'house' they put together as a place to stay ^^

THE 'ABODE'

spamton and tenna have built themselves a small 'house' near the dump in waterfall out of various scrap wood that they gathered over time. it's really more of a lean-to than anything else, but it's gotten better and homier over time. it's still nothing special, really drafty, and doesn't keep the cold and water out- but it's theirs, and it's all they have for now.

the furniture is, of course, all taken from the dump or similar places. they salvage what they can, and if something can't be used, they break it down for the wood. they also have to pick and choose what to use carefully; because of their big difference in size, they essentially have to compromise on how big the furniture is.

they have a surprisingly kinda nice kitchen table that they came across one day; someone in snowdin was giving away old furniture when they moved to HOME. it took the two of them a while to haul it back to waterfall, but it was worth it. it's genuinely the nicest thing they own.

when they first built the 'house', spamton spent a lot of time tenna-proofing it.

he made labels for things in the house by carving letters into scrap pieces of wood. he put labels on or near as many things in the house as he could to help tenna find his way around better. he probably went a LITTLE bit overboard with the labeling at times, even. some examples of labels include: 'kitchen table', 'our room', 'main door', 'cupboard', 'utensils', 'scrap storage', 'parts', etc. some decidedly less helpful labels include 'spamton's specil chair DO NOT TOUCH', 'spamton's specil journal DO NOT TOUCH', and 'fragile DO NOT TOUCH'

spamton made absolutely certain that tenna had input on where they were putting the furniture. they may not have much of it, but he still doesn't want him to feel like he's left out on the decision-making and knows that tenna will want the furniture arranged in a specific way to make it easier to get around the 'house'. that, plus the fact that he knows tenna will NEVER EVER want them to move the furniture once he memorizes where it all is, so they'd better get it right the first time…

whenever possible they tend to look for brightly-colored things for around the 'house.' if spamton has a choice between a boring brown bowl and a bright orange one, he'd pick the orange every time. it's easier for tenna to see brighter colors since they pop out more. similarly, on the rare occasions where they have a small amount of money to spend to buy something from a store (even then it's generally thrifted), spamton tries to get something tactile for tenna. one of the first things they ever bought together was a used blanket from a yard sale that has a nice texture. it only cost 5g but that's still a lot for them. spamton saw that tenna seemed to really love the feel of it, so he talked tenna into letting him buy it for them.

they keep two echoflowers in the house as a sort of verbal reminder method. they each have one for themselves. essentially, they'll whisper to it something that they want to remember later, then listen to it when they need to check on what they said previously. basically a auditory form of leaving sticky notes.

UT spamton ("trash heap" AU) headcanons- continued

have some more headcanons for spamton from this au!! first post here ^^

spamton's speech quirk/ticks used to get him teased and mocked pretty often by his coworkers at the post office (the addisons), causing him to resent them quite a bit. when downsizing hit, he was the only one of the postmen to get 'let go' as well, which only widened the divide between them.

he has a strange and intense fixation on the angel from the prophecy and the concept of heaven, even in this au.

spamton has a notebook he keeps that mostly houses unstable rambles, frantic scribbles, and vents. he doesn't let anyone read it; it's his personal "journal" of sorts. he doesn't bother hiding it from tenna, though, since tenna can't see well enough to read it regardless. every time tenna asks him what he's writing about he just lies. he doesn't want to let on to tenna that he struggles with feeling detached from reality- in spamton's mind, that's his secret to keep and his cross to bear.

very desperate to get 'medical' care for tenna and a better place for them to stay. his motivation for making money and getting them out of the dump is not himself, but tenna. his wellbeing takes the backseat. they're similar in this regard- both care far more for others than themselves.

likes to doodle on things a lot. he certainly wouldn't consider himself an artist, but he does enjoy drawing on scraps of paper. at times he wishes he had someone to show his doodles to, since tenna can't appreciate them fully due to being almost fully blind, but at the same time he feels a sort of comfort in knowing that no one is going to judge his scribbles. he just just doodle all over everything and the likelihood of anyone else ever judging his drawings is incredibly low.

hiya, i've got some of my art up on redbubble now!! i'm really not expecting to get many (if any) sales, but i figured i'd share here just in case ^^ thus far i've mostly got some of my mouthwashing and deltarune art up, but more to come hopefully! ideally it'll be some nice passive income... would really help me out in the long run. so, fingers crossed! Circa 2021 (chapter 2 release):

He’s desperate and lonely. He believes everyone has abandoned him, and maybe they have. He believed a voice on the phone was helping him, but it was using him. It abandoned him, leaving him for dead. 

But he won't let go. He’ll forcefully take all that he deserves, all that he lost and more. and once he’s at the very top, where he belongs, he’ll show them all. They’ll see. They’ll all pay.

me: “Yeah he’s cool, I see why people are losing their mind about him. But he doesn't activate brainworms for me, I still like him tho.”

2025 (chapter 3 release):

It wasn't greed. It wasn't selfishness. Not fully. It wasn't just something that happened. It wasn't outside of his control. He tried to see too far, not just because he wanted more. He trusted. He loved. He dared to risk what he had for someone else. That was why he was abandoned by the phone. 

What he had was not for his partner, but he didn't care. He wanted to reach the heavens while holding his hand. He wanted him to see. It was an act of defiance rooted in love that did him in.

He lost it all because he dared to trust. He dared to love. He hated to feel. Back then, If he just didn't feel, he’d still have it all. Back then, If he didn't care, he’d still have the power, he’d still have the phone.

He hates that he had loved enough to risk himself. He hates that he lost. He hates him, not because he abandoned him, but because If HE just didn't exist, if he didn't love him, if he didn't risk it for someone else, he’d still be on top.

Explanation (become insane with me):

It's about the change from "he had no agency in his own demise" (things went well when he had the voice on the phone, then the voice just disappeared. it was outside of his control)

To "his demise was his own doing, his own choice. Moreover, it was a choice made in a rare moment of selflessness, for someone he genuinely loved" (instead of the voice just disappearing, it left him because he defied its will. He knew or didn't know it was a bad choice to defy God- but he still did it. HE did it. It was his doing.)

It's about character agency!!! Im sure I bring it up a lot when I talk about characters, but stories are so much more meaningful to me when the characters aren't helpless- even if it makes them worst as people, ESPECIALLY SO, it's so much better when their tragedies are their own fault.

And you know what? I would've loved it so much even if there was no love. Even if it was a classic style bare bones Greek mythology story, where the character acts selfishly, being humanly flawed, and gets punished for it. (please don't pelt me with rocks.)

But it was even more. Toby did it again with the thing that breaks me. It was love. Whether you ship them or not (I know it could mean nothing™, idc) Spamton still cared about tenna. It's not even implied, it's outright said. He cared, that was his flaw! That was his mistake!

So often when we get half the story in these games, we take the information way too literally and assume the worse of the characters- (Kris opened a dark fountain? Oh they're possessed by a second entity.) (ralsei hides secrets from us? Oh he's secretly evil.)

Oh Spamton says he hates this "tenna" guy? That's the person who abandoned him and took everything from him. He's the villain of his story.

Nope. Tenna was someone Spamton cared about so much. So much so that he made an incredibly uncharacteristic decision, to risk it all, for him. For someone other than himself.

Spamton hates Tenna because Tenna is a representation of everything he lost, and why he lost it. Feelings are so much easier to hate and blame when they've got a name.

Before chapter 3 (from what we were told) his story lacked agency. Things happened around him, to him. Never BECAUSE of him.

The voice on the phone found HIM. it helped him get big. It decided to disappear, Then everything fell apart. Nothing was his fault and because of him. It was a good narrative and it made sense for him! But it didn't make me eat drywall. Y'know.

And when chapter 3 released... We learned that tenna managed to convince Spamton to sign the deal. He managed to convince him to tell him "his secret". Spamton was about to give him divine knowledge. He DECIDED TO. he MADE THE DECISION to sign the deal. Then the phone rang.

it waited until Spamton really did pick up the pen, and put it to the contract. Until the decision was clear and final. Then, it cut him off.

It was a fully conscious decision. It was his doing. It was his fault. He risked his position of power because he let a person that he cared about tempt him into it. He wouldnt do this for just anybody. He said screw it to everything he got from the voice on the phone, for this guy who made him feel just as special. For the first time in his life he did something for someone else. And that was when he lost it all.

THAT'S a story that makes me walk into the sea.
