The citizens of Delta-05 live by the Book, an AI programmed to protect the people from Timefolds. Mia Johnson isn’t as wary as she should be, and somebody has noticed. But Mia has other things to worry about - meeting her future wife is in today’s Plan, and Emilia Novak, who lives her life by Book, appears to be Mia’s complete opposite. This is the first instalment of Closing the Book, a student-led sci-fi podcast.

It is worrying to me how few dare to entertain the idea of a world where they may be free to choose their own paths. Without the surveillance of their everyday lives, without the Book system informing them of who they are, what they are, who they will be. Is that alone not a pitiful existence? Is the captivity of their futures not enough to inspire hatred in the masses?

It has not passed me by, and I refuse to let our lives be controlled any longer. I am what I make myself, not what a program tells me I am. And I make myself your saviour.

So, are you ready to join me? Are you prepared to fight for a world where you can make your own choices without fear of punishment? Or, might I say most importantly, are you ready to have fun?

Sylvester. Some call him eccentric, some call him a leader, some, an idiot. Some call him dangerous...

Living by the Book is how we survive. It gives us security, peace of mind, and a purpose. I trust my Book. I trust the future it has planned for me. Here in Delta-05, I live a full and happy life- just perfect! Almost perfect. There’s only one thing missing: a spouse. I just can’t wait for the day my Book matches me with my perfect future partner! Somebody beautiful, with good values and most of all: dedicated to the plans. For the safety of those I love, I will live my life: By the Book.

I am Book. I am safety. I am security. I map your movements, I set your timetable. I am your friend. Well, personally, I am not your device. I am Mia Johnson’s.

She is not like you. She doesn’t listen to me, not nearly as much as is required of her. But she is mine. Perhaps, someday soon, she will listen.

Timefolds? Well, now there’s a mystery and a half. Splits in time or space or maybe something else which pop up completely at random. Get too close and who knows what’ll happen? You could see stars get born, you could be thrown into a volcano and have your face burned right off. It’s a real gamble.   Uncertainty sparks fear. Fear can be manipulated. That’s how we’re here, right now, in Delta-05, with Books deciding our every move. What we eat, where we go, who we fall in love with.

This isn’t my life. It never has been. But someday soon that’s gonna change. I can feel it.

Hello and welcome everybody to Delta-05, where your safety is a certainty. Within our state-of-the-art city walls, you can rest assured that Timefolds will never reach you, and you can live your lives without fear.

Do note, however, that compliance with the Book system is mandatory. Make sure to do what your Book tells you to do, stick to the Plan, and you will be doing your bit to make sure every single citizen of Delta-05 is happy and secure. Anyone who drifts from the Plan, in the interest of the people, will be removed and wiped.

And remember, folks: life is in the future! Follow the Book and that future will be ours without a doubt.

Long ago, the Book system was put in place to ensure mysterious rips in time never bested humanity. Every human was to own a Book, a device which determines and provides them with a Plan. Where they go, what they eat, who they fall in love with. It is for their safety, and for the good of the human race. So of course, the repercussions for deviating from the Plan are severe. 

Mia Johnson is sick of it. She wants her own life. And very soon, she is going to get what she wants, but not in a way that she could ever expect. 

Time-hopping, revolutions, relationships being pushed to the limit. All in a 6 episode podcast series.

We are a team of 6 students, all with a great love for sci-fi and bent on creating a fun, thrilling podcast series. Think Doctor Who meets dystopia. 

On the 9th of December, our first episode will be released, and we want you to join us on the journey!
