Eyes Wide Open: What Goes On in a Rehab Center
One problem with the depiction of rehab centers in movies and TV is that they tend to glamorize it. Rehab is not some spa that you can check in and check out of whenever you like. Rehab centers cost money, time, and effort—this isn’t something that you should feel that is arbitrary.
Recently, we got asked just what goes on in a rehab center. The implication was that it was some sort of bubble that people with trouble go into to either be tortured or to enjoy a luxurious time. The ideas were so polarized from each other that it was actually quite comical. Today, we want to give you guys a bit of an idea just want goes on in a rehab center.
Take note that this is something that we based off our own personal experiences. So if there was anything that someone experienced differently, that cannot be helped as different rehabs have different procedures.
Full on Physical Evaluation
This is important for those who have suffered from substance abuse of any kind. The physical state of the body plays a huge part in the recovery process. The physical effects of drugs or alcohol need to be fully considered in order to develop a good detoxification program.
A lot of testing will be done in this stage. You can expect blood tests and others of that kind in order to fully determine the extent of the physical effects and what else could be in your system. This is important so that they do not end up giving your medicine that should not be mixed with an underlying condition or substance in your body.
Psychiatric Evaluation
Every rehab should have an addiction specialist or therapist as part of their staff. This person will be in charge of determining your present mental state. They will also be a huge part of the solo and group therapy sessions that you will have.
Detoxification Period
Once they know what state your body and mind is in, it will be the start of the detox. Addiction carries severe withdrawal symptoms which can be quite painful. Good rehab centers will have procedures in place to make this stage as comfortable as possible.
It will usually include an IV drip to ensure that the body stays hydrated during this time. If the person’s mental state is not amenable for detox, they will most likely be put under sedation until the detox process is complete.
Therapy
This can include both physical and psychiatric therapy. This one of the more common situations that is often played in movies and TV: the people sitting in a circle and talking. Physical therapy includes a fitness regime. This is normal as end goal is to have a holistic and overall healthy individual by the end of the program.
In Closing
Rehab has several other processes that they go through before someone is discharged. We hope that we were able to provide a bit of a peek into what goes into a rehab center. Many a life has been saved by one and we hope that they will continue to do so.

Not All Rainbows: Four Issues Recovering People Have After Rehab
The journey to “full” recovery is always ongoing. When someone undergoes a successful stint at a rehab center, they are often faced with new struggles. The first year is often one of the toughest ones that those who went to rehab will have to wrestle with. Today, we want to look at four particular issues that people who have gone to rehab deal with the most.
Low Self-Confidence
When you have gone down a pretty low place in your life and actually needed outside help to get better, this does not really do much for your self-confidence. There is nothing quite more earth-shattering than to realize that you failed at caring for your own personal well-being.
Rehab provides a space wherein a person can recover and slowly gain a foothold back into ‘normalcy’. When someone who found security in that is suddenly thrust back into the very world that may have caused the problem to begin with, it is understandable to feel like they are at a complete loss.
One way to battle this is to stick to the aftercare program that will require further counseling. The therapist will be there to help build a patient’s confidence in their capability to care for themselves once again.
Stigma
Despite people’s best intentions, there is always a stigma that comes attached when you’ve been to rehab. Those who live their lives and never had to deal with anything that required rehabilitation will try their best to understand.
However, the one thing that we have often seen is the instinct to shrink away from a person who has been to rehab.
Temptation
Rehab was great because it effectively cut off any chance of being tempted by the poison of one’s choosing. When you successfully get released from rehab, the safety of that secure space is suddenly gone.
Now, everything is allowed again. This is one of the most terrifying things faced by those that recover. One way to stay out of harm’s way to keep away from anything that would lead you back to your bad habits. Enlist the help of a friend or a loved one that you trust with your well-being. Allow them to keep you accountable and that can help you stay on track.
Feeling Out of Place
Rehab often becomes a bubble of sorts—especially after a prolonged stay. They ease you into a routine that you get used to. The people who are there with you start to feel like they belong in your life. However, this is all ripped away when you finish your rehabilitation program.
Suddenly, you will need to face people who have gone on with their lives while you picked your pieces up again. One thing we can vouch for is that rehab can make you feel like you no longer quite fit anywhere.
In Closing
Those who finish rehab must be commended. It is actually not easy—the doctors and counselors are trained to sniff out the slightest lie on your part about your wellness. While the road to recover is still not easy by any means, just keep at it. You can do it.

Mental Health Talk: What You Can Do To Help Someone with Psychiatric Concerns
Mental health is a touchy subject. There are plenty of people out there (some of our loved ones included) that were very quick to dismiss very real issues as ‘being dramatic’. Mental illness is something that affects an astoundingly large number of individuals the world over. It is something that can hit anyone.
In the recent years or so, there has been a significant rise in the number of well-known persons who have succumbed to their mental illness. Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington was one of those people. A video shared by his family members showed the singer laughing and joking hours before he took his own life.
He was one of the clearest examples of the fact that mental illness can hide behind a smile. A person who can seemingly look absolutely fine on the outside could be shattered within and we wouldn’t even know it. That said, we wanted to take some time today to talk about what you could to do help someone with psychiatric concerns.
How You Can Help
Be There
One of the more common things that we have heard people who struggle with mental illness say is that they felt alone or abandoned. They felt like no one really saw them because no one was paying close enough attention.
Humans are very social creatures. We instinctively feel if there is something wrong with a friend or loved one. If you have that feeling, voice it out. Ask them if they are okay and be there for them.
Connect Them toward Suitable Solutions
When you have a mental illness, the world can seem a lot crazier and scarier than it actually is. Psychiatric patients often feel confused and lost. If someone in your life is presently struggling with mental health, do not delay.
Look up counseling organizations and rehab programs in the nearby area. Get them the help that they need.
Manage Your Emotions
Remember, this is not about you. This is about them and how you can help them. They might not be as forthcoming about their issues as you may like or they may rebuff you entirely. Keep trying. If you cannot, then please let someone else with the capacity to truly help know about the problem.
In Closing
Every little action counts. Something as simple as asking someone how their day is going or how they are feeling can be enough to open the floodgate of emotions that they have been holding. How you think you can help someone with psychiatric concerns?

Planning an Intervention: Basic Do’s and Don’ts
Thanks to reality TV, a majority of the public have a rather skewed understanding of what goes on in an intervention. Today, we want to shed a bit of light to chase away the misconceptions. When you mention the word ‘intervention’, it is not surprising that a lot of people think of sitting a troubled person down, giving them ‘tough love’, and expecting positive results.
It simply doesn’t work that way.
While an intervention is one way to get the troubled person started on their journey to recovery, it highly depends on how you go about it. A botched intervention can lead the troubled person toward depression or even rage. After all, it is extremely difficult to have more than one person you know tell you that there is something wrong with you.
Today, we aim to provide everyone with a better understanding regarding the do’s and don’ts of an intervention.
Do’s
Suitable Planning
An intervention must be planned properly. It is not something that you just do out of the blue. There must be certain questions that must be asked beforehand:
Who is the person at the center of the intervention?
What is the problem?
The issue on hand must be made clear. If you do not know who needs help and what they need help for, the intervention will not go anywhere.
Have a Clear Goal
It is not enough to simply discuss the behavior or the faults of the person at the center of the discussion. There needs to be a clear goal at the very end. Is the intervention made to get the person to go to rehab? Is this intervention made to simply knock some sense into the person?
Having a clear goal is necessary in order to provide your plan with a direction.
Don’ts
Do It without Consulting a Professional
Even if you do not have a professional there on the day itself, it would be best to consult with a counselor before you plan on doing your intervention. They will be able to provide with a good way to structure your intervention.
Always remember that an intervention is a highly charged event. You never really know how the person at the very center may react to all the sudden attention. A licensed counselor will be able to provide information that is critical to the success of your plan.
In Closing
An intervention, when done right, can save lives. It is the best way to show a loved one that you are there for them and that you would like them to find their way back to wellness. When you are planning to do one in the near future, we suggest that you load up on information. Get help so that you may better help that person in your life.

Tackling Recovery: Why is Rehab Necessary At All?
When it comes to the subject of recovery and wellness, there are those that question the necessity of rehab facilities. When tackling something as serious as addiction, is rehab necessary at all? To clarify, we are referring to the rehab centers that focus primarily on substance addiction. We are focusing on that as this type of rehab is the one that is often questioned for their efficacy.
What Does Rehab Provide?
It takes one who has gone through rehab to truly appreciate why it is necessary. Lucky for us, we have several people in our writing team that can attest to why there is a valid need for rehab. They shared some of their thoughts about this discourse today.
Structure
Someone who is aiming to recover from addiction will honestly need structure to their routine. Waking up at a specific time and having a specific schedule on a daily basis can really help someone who is lost to find their way back to normalcy.
When someone has fallen into the pit of despair, the structure that rehab provides while initially unwelcome eventually sets the foundation for future schedules as well. Some of our writers are presently writing their own success stories. They attribute where they are now to the fact that they were provided a structure that they could fall back upon.
Security
The road to recovery is often bumpy and loaded with a lot of anger and emotions. A person who suffers from addiction will normally believe that nothing is wrong despite their destructive behavior. Therefore, they need to be watched and placed in an environment that can ensure their safety and security.
For some high profile people, rehab provides a safe and secure space where they can seek aid for their troubles.
Support
While friends and loved ones are great, one who is suffering from addiction will always feel that those around them just don’t get it. Not even the doctors who dedicated their lives to help recovering addicts. A rehab provides the opportunity to obtain support from people who are undergoing the same things. After all, it takes one to know one.
The depth of the pain and struggles an addict has can only ever be understood by someone who has lived through the same thing.
In Closing
Rehab facilities exist because there are people who want to get better. There is an understandable level of concern over those who are not in rehab of their own volition. What we must all remember that those that suffer from addiction, no matter what it is, will be a danger to themselves and others. Rehab centers are there to provide a valuable service to those who cannot help themselves.
So this us saying: YES, rehab is necessary. What’s your stance—why do you think rehab is necessary at all?
