this is from ““such blood, such power: the lot complex in anne rice’s “interview with the vampire”” by debbie joyce chung which analyzes lestat’s turning of claudia in the novel as a pedophilic, incestuous rape. the idea that exploring parent-child incest between lestat/claudia or louis/claudia is an unspeakable perversion of the source text is ridiculous. the show cuts back on this, but it’s still absolutely present:
-lestat taking claudia to lover’s lane is incredibly sexually charged (playing with her hair, “my belladonic beauty”) mingling a tutelage in how to slake her vampiric bloodlust with eroticism (claudia observing the couple heavy petting before orgiastic murder). this is framed narratively as claudia’s sexual awakening. she is 18: a teenager not only physically but mentally. she has just been turned, and everyone in the family views lestat and louis as claudia’s parent.
-she telepathically communicates with louis while he and lestat have sex - a serious erosion of boundaries between the familial and sexual.
-lestat frames claudia as his romantic rival for louis’ affections, but not in a way that erases her daughterhood but centers it - the classic family triad where the girl child is viewed as usurping a spouse’s rightful place because of the mutilation of patriarchal family structures. sexual and romantic energies and jealousies of adults are projected harmfully on daughters all the time.
-claudia is created as louis’ daughter, but she recognizes that she was also created as a replacement for his sister. a child made to fulfill a parent’s emotional needs in a very literal, and inappropriate, way. she is the one that redefines their relationship as siblings rather than father and daughter - they are vampires, they are not human, and there is a fluidity to their family structure that creates this continual blurring and renegotiation between roles, including the possibility of the boundaries between familial and romantic being crossed.
i haven’t rewatched season 1 in a hot minute so that’s just a quick rundown. but it’s definitely an important theme - and not only to rice’s supposedly “bad” (to the adaptation’s “good”) source text, but to the tv show as well - and i can’t believe the number of people i have seen in the last week earnestly insist there is no incest in the show whatsoever.

she was at the club. it didnt change anything. it didnt save anyone. there were just too many forces against it. but it still matters that she was at the club.

you weak-hearted fools, do you not understand? i cannot die! not forever! for what if the writers run out of things to do in the latest timeline and need me again? who else to make them their millions in the coming dark hours if not me? i could return, wrested from my ghost wife’s loving ghostly arms, at any moment. billions of possibilities stand before you. of course, this means that i will never be truly happy or at peace, but neither will you! enjoy looking at that statue every time your vaunted heroes step outdoors while you can, because it is but a dark reminder of the purgatory i have dragged all of us into. oh, yes. behold its white-hot metal ass and weep.

you know you are really being very solipsistic and self-centred right now. the universe is vast and you are not the protgaonist of every story. have you considered that from some prespectives, the radiator is being handcuffed to you?

there's this word in Serbian 'vukojebina' which literally means 'the place where wolves go to fuck' but they use it to mean 'in the middle of nowhere'. it sure does the job well, but the visual stayed with me longer than I would have liked it to.
