The 52-Hertz Whale: Is It the World’s Loneliest Whale?
Tumblr media
It has been years now but researchers are still trying to collect different information and track the migration of a marine mammal, Whale by its sound. In the year 1989, William Watkins, a researcher of the Wood Hole Oceanographic Institution and the inventor of the underwater recording system, noted high-pitch song of a whale and made the very first recording of this marine mammal.
In the year 1992, December 7, it was a navy technician who listened to the noise of a unique whale that was coming in at a frequency of 52 hertz, a much higher frequency than the other whales.
According to many researchers, this whale is the loneliest in the world.
The song of a whale does not match to the sounds made by blue or fin whales. The calls of Blue whales are typically in the range of 15-20 Hz and fin whales produce sound at 20. The sounds of blue and fin whales are intense, longer, and have the lowest frequency. On the other hand, the sound of this unique whale is mild, shorter, and has a much higher frequency.
One can easily identify and differentiate its pattern of signals from other whales by measuring the frequency level of its sound. The pattern of repetition, duration, and sequence of its signals are also changeable.
It is really difficult to track the presence and movement of the 52- Hertz whale. This is mainly because its movements are closely associated with the blue whales and its timing is similar to that of fin whales.
Every year, at the beginning of the month of August- December, this giant mammal can be spotted in the Pacific Ocean. Many researchers said it is able to swim 30-40 km each day and known for long-distance migrations, regularly traveling miles- north and south. It is capable of traveling as far north as the Aleutian and Kodiak Islands to as far south as the California coast. As per record, it has an estimated travel distance range of around 708 km (low) to 11,062 km (high) per season.
Despite of having a usually high voice, it has survived, grown-up, and able to live a healthy life. It means the high pitch sound produced by this whale is not harmful to its survival.
Many refer, this whale can be a hybrid species and others say a part of this creature is a blue as it showcases similar kind of behavior like the blue whale. According to the few researchers, the sound might not be produced by one whale but more than one.
It means whether it is one lonely creature that makes the sound or there are multiple ones- the mystery is yet to be revealed.
