WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS
According to the world health organisation, coronavirus refers to a family of viruses found in animals and humans that are known to cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious diseases such as MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) & SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory).
The virus is known to be zoonotic, meaning transmission from animals to human is possible although uncommon. This was the case with MERS-CoV which was found to be transmitted from Camels to humans with the first cases originating from the United Arab Emirates. The Novel or new coronavirus of 2019 which originated in Wuhan in China which so far has infected over 30,000 people and killed over 800 worldwide is also thought to have originated from animals and passed onto humans although this has not yet been proven.
