June 21 - DAY 9 (Sun.) Happy Father’s Day! We got up around 8am and made a stop at the Safeway again for a couple of Starbucks coffees then hit the road back to LA for our 6 hour drive. The drive back wasn’t so bad and we stopped at Barstow for an In-N-Out burger and fries. We arrived back in PV around 4pm. What a great family road trip...one to remember for the ages!
MISC NOTES:
* Brought sunscreen, wipes, bleach, paper towels, hand sanitizer.
* Ponderosa Ranch recommended in Zion but 20 mins away from Main Street. Good for family activities (trampolines, pony rides).
* Grand Hotel in South Rim recommended in Grand Canyon.
* Pink Jeep - Broken Arrow Tour recommended but we did Coyote and was told it was rougher than Broken Arrow.
* Utah has restrictions on alcohol content and not as easy to access beer / wine (i.e. not available in grocery stores).
* Hotels were fairly clean but definitely swept the room with wipes & bleach before getting settled.

Jun 20 - DAY 8 (Sat.). We got up around 7AM, ordered breakfast from the bar, packed up the car and began our trek to the Grand Canyon. The drive was about 2 hours from Sedona - we got gas along the way. We drove straight to the South Rim entrance and Verkamp Visitor Center where we got our bearings, maps, and a few quick pics of the Grand Canyon. We then met at Bright Angel Bike Rentals near the main Visitor Center (which was closed) and got fitted for bikes with helmets. The option was 2 or 5 hour rentals and the difference was only $5 so we went with 5 hours and we’re glad we did!! We proceeded to ride the trail around the Southern Rim to Yaki Point. One word - MAJESTIC! This was a definite highlight of the trip. When we got to Yaki Point, we hiked down into the canyon but not too far as there were switchbacks that descended very quickly. We were not equipped to go very far and this would be a must do on the next visit to the GC as a hike to AHH HAA point was what most hikers were doing. Do you remember the Brady Bunch episode where the family goes down a switchback trail on mules?? This was the trail!!
Upon climbing back up, we hopped back on our bikes and back-tracked toward the Market Village where we had a late lunch at Yavapai Lodge Tavern which was quite nice. I had a pulled pork sandwich with a Blue Moon brew - perfect! We rode back to our starting point to turn in our bikes. The duration of our rental was 4.5 hours. We then walked to Mather’s Point which was a very GRAND view! From here, we jumped back into the car to drive to a couple of other stops along the Southern Rim, then began the 40 minute drive to the town of Williams where we were staying for the night. When we got to Williams, we stopped at the Safeway (only big grocery store) to stock up on water and snacks for the drive back to LA. We then explored the downtown area and had a light dinner at Station 66 Italian Bistro which was decent before retiring for the evening at our La Quinta Hotel. The hotel seemed new and was clean. Pretty basic but was great for one night.

June 19 - DAY 7 (FRI.). So how could we top yesterday? You rent an ATV and spend a few hours riding a rough trail - Schnebly Hill - and taking in amazing scenery! The concierge recommended renting from this place at a 76 gas station at corner of RTE 179 and main drag that goes through Uptown. This was another great choice and tons of fun. The girls loved it and both Claudia and I actually liked driving and traversing though fields of boulders. This ride thoroughly wore us out and ‘dustified’ us with red powder all over. After this amazingly jolting ride, we went back to the hotel and spent a couple of hours lounging at the pool after having lunch (Cuban sandwich and Vodka/Guava cocktail) at the hotel Salt Creek Grill. After frolicking in the pool, we took a walk into town to check out the shops, then took a short drive down to the Tlaquepaque Center which had several artsy shops. From here, we took a drive to check out a few rock landmarks including the Courthouse and Chapel Hill, and ended up watching the sunset at the Airport Mesa. Afterwards, we ordered takeout at the Hideway House which had good pizzas & pastas. We brought back our dinner to eat back in the room and packed that night to prepare for our drive to the Grand Canyon the next day.
