So what if you’re alone right now. Embrace it. Go get coffee alone. Shop alone. Drive alone. Watch movies alone. Get to know yourself. Nothing bad can come from riding whatever wave to self improvement you’re blessed with in the moment.

One of my favorite things about August, especially towards the end of August, is how everything starts to slowly take on the autumny vibe. Grocery stores start to sell Halloween candy and themed treats. Department stores start to sell their autumn and Halloween decor. You start to receive Halloween costume catalogues in the mail. It just makes you feel all the more excited, even though Autumn is not quite there yet.

I miss 2003 when 50 Cent was the hottest rapper out and I was naive with no responsibilities.

“This film has long scenes where there’s time to illustrate the thought process.  All Moses does in some of them is to listen, which is very, very challenging.  To make Moses expressive, we used a lot of what some people call ‘bottom eyelid animation.’  It’s really difficult to suggest what Moses is feeling and thinking when all you’ve got to work with are the lines surrounding the eye.  There were also scenes where most of what I did were very, very subtle head moves, because I want the characters as true, as believable, and as real as possible.” — James Baxter, animator for Moses

Be careful how comfortable you get with jokes that cut yourself down and emphasize the false concept that there’s no hope for your future and life is pointless. I get that talking about struggles is important and helps in not feeling alone. There has to be a line though, between “hey here’s something that’s rough so I’m gonna laugh about it” and cheering each other on as you hammer unhealthy concepts deeper into your mind. You are not worthless. You are not ugly. You are not trash. Good is absolutely possible in your future. Don’t forget that words have power. Be careful how much poison you throw in your own well.

“Zoe loves the movies. So I knew if I was going to propose, it had to involve the movies. But I can’t make a movie myself because I don’t work in film. So I had to get creative. I ordered a black-and-white Italian film from a vintage film dealer. It seemed vaguely romantic. I spent four months editing it on my computer. I changed all the subtitles. I cut out the harem scene. I completely changed the plot so that it resembled our lives. I wrote some dialogue about picture frames because Zoe’s family owns a frame shop. And I love trains. So I made the main character a train enthusiast. When I finished the editing, I rented out a small theater with sixty seats. I invited all of Zoe’s friends and family. I made sure everyone sat in the front and didn’t turn around. The weather was beautiful that day. Zoe didn’t want to go to a movie. We got in a big fight about it, but I finally convinced her. I was so nervous that I laughed during the whole film. I’d seen all the jokes 1000 times but I laughed at them anyway. Then during the final scene, the main characters started speaking to the audience, and one of them asked: ‘Does anyone here want to get married?’ So I stood up. The lights came on. All her friends and family turned around. And I gave a speech that I prepared. I was so nervous that I forgot to ask the actual question. But Zoe bailed me out and said ‘yes’ anyway.”
