An elf that wasn’t a servant? And she had the markings of the Dalish. The colors were dark against her skin, though Rinne almost missed them at first glance. How Alarith would love to know he was right. The Dalish were real. With careful steps, she came up beside the other woman.

“Duncan said there was another elven recruit. I suppose that would be you?”

Rinne...
doesn’t know how to read very well. Cyrion taught her, but between trying to survive in the Alienage and learning from her mother and then being with her cousins, it sort of just went on the back burner. She can make out some words okay if you give her a moment, but the older she gets the more she just doesn’t want to think about how she can’t read.
She knows how to sew though. Another skill her father taught her, but one that stuck. The stitching patterns are muscle memory now. And sewing together dolls for the kids in the alienage, so they had something to play with when their imaginations ran dry, was something she did a few times.
One time she ended up stealing a book about Garahel, wanting to give the kids a story about a real elven hero, and she spent weeks trying to read that book so she could tell it to them. It’s the only one she’s ever finished.

“Who are you?” Rinne turned, dagger drawn and dripping with blood. On the ground in front of her laid a dead bandit, neck gutted.

The Black Cauldron  {Sentence Starters}
“This had better not be your fault!”
“For your sake, you’d better be telling the truth.”
“You’ve interfered for the last time!”
“Oh, what a pity. I was so hoping for someone who could help me escape.”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I’ve ignored you.”
“Take it! I’m sure you’ve murdered for less.”
“Silly girl. Even if she is a princess.”
“Oh, I’m afraid it’ll soon be over for us.”
“Perhaps it would interest you to see what fate has in store for you.”
“Untried courage is no match for evil. Just remember that.”
“Oh, well, if you want to come with me, you may.”
“Help! Get this thing off me!”
“Oh, shush. Why do you have to judge every word I say?”
“Yes, yes, oh yes! Then you will worship ME!”
“What does a girl know about swords, anyway?”
“That’s not what I said. You weren’t listening.”
“We never give anything away. What we do is bargain, trade.”

Skyhold’s library was proving fruitless. It didn’t help that Rinne’s reading skills were rusty or that she had almost exhausted her candle wick, but no one bothered her in the library this late in the day. No one asked her about the Fifth Blight or treated her like some fabled hero. Still, coming to Skyhold in search of information about ending the taint was turning out to be a pointless endeavor as well as a headache inducing one thanks to Corypheus.
Sighing, Rinne brushed her papers aside in search of another book in her collected mess, but only succeeded in dusting them off the table to flutter uselessly to the floor and the room below.

“Maker’s ass,” she cursed.

“Don’t tell me you’re one of the other Grey Warden recruits.” So far Rinne had met the whiny shem, the sleazy shem, and the one that wouldn’t shut up. Actually learning their names wasn’t something she was interested in. This one she had seen talking with Duncan, the only human within a thousand mile radius that she somewhat trusted and that was only because the hahren had.

“You poor thing.” Though her tone is anything but sympathizing. “Sleeping with dogs instead of outside. And I suppose you were denied meals too? I see you couldn’t take it upon yourself to starve to death.”

Mouth refuses to gape at the unpleasant remarks so a small hum of indifference leaves her nostrils instead. Words mean nothing but an insecure speaker, or at least that is what she tries to remind herself. ❝Right. You have spirit. I’m sure it goes a long way in the places you inhabit.❞
Tumblr media
“Knives go deeper.”  Now it’s a threat, but she’s isn’t going to take action here, if she will at all. Like most days, her hatred for shems is at a simmering boil. Most of the time, just getting under their skin will let off her steam. “Why don’t you go ask one of your kind for a respectable inn? Though I suspect it will be filled with rats regardless.”

“Is… is that what you think of me? Of my life? Ha…”
Those words, quite honestly, stung.

Tumblr media
“Did you have to sleep without a blanket? How t e r r i f y i n g.”
