Thoughts on Sendero Luminoso? I feel like everything I hear about them is either uncritical admiration from MLMs or anti-communist propaganda
They’re pretty awful but the anticommunist propaganda is hypocritical. The Alberto Fujimori-led Peruvian state is responsible for the relative majority and absolute greater intensity of repression, disappearances, and slaughter during the internal conflict. But I don’t think this means we should make apologetics for SL. SL thought that the organization perfectly represented the class because of the application of the mass line, that the organization represented the continuity of the true communist political lineage from Marx to Lenin to Mao to Gonzalo, and that what was good for the organization was good for the revolution.
Thats what led them to commit and publicly justify terror tactics against the peasants like the Lucanamarca Massacre—you can find their own statements pretty quickly and their supporters will defend it as necessary. Usually they say the peasants were part of the rondas campesinas that had been fighting with the SL, and that some of the rondas were state-sponsored, so any of the SL’s violence beyond any limits against the rondas could be justified. But the campesinos had organized rondas independently before the state began to sponsor any.
They did so initially as a form of protecting against the theft of cattle because their communities were isolated from everyday forms of state governance like policing. The campesinos tended to think in terms of the rural-Native-poor being united against the urban-white-rich. Many of them sympathized with the SL when they were killing the urban-white-rich and saw them as allies in that setting, but resented the SL trying to change the class structure of their communities from above and integrate them into the organizational structure. There were also tensions between the SL and some villages because the SL was trying to implement gender reforms which clashed with conservative and patriarchal attitudes.
Eventually the tensions escalated to a war between the rondas campesinas and SL, and the SL became isolated from its base while reducing the organization into nothing but a machine for war against the state and its political enemies. Which led to its current withered and irrelevant status.
Still, they did have a lot of importance influence on global Maoism taking a revolutionary perspective as the unofficial leaders of the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement. But even this was advantageous to only a limited degree, because even if they began with a very creative New Left Maoism they’ve ended in a navelgazing and misanthropic dogmatism. I think the other main path that New Left Maoism went in Latin America was that of the Zapatistas, and I’m much more interested in taking influence from that source than the ad hoc justifications for asceticism, dogmatism, and personality worship that make up most of Gonzaloism

I love how the gooners are always the most obnoxious and heavy handed of the moralists. This goes back at least to Augustine. In the Confessions would describe gooning and feeling bad as if like he had to compensate for it by being extra extra good. He also obsessively details his sex life in a very gooneresque way while denouncing the life of gooning. Very similar to Rousseau’s writing in all kinds of moralistic detail about his struggles with his own tendencies as a furious masturbator and ashamed gooner

While I'm posting here and no longer under any obligation to rep the company, I might as well share this incredibly funny story from behind the scenes that I don't think ever got out: Due to the constant problems we had around "The Chaser" being also a name of a sex thing online (you would not BELIEVE the kind of confused fan mail I had to sort through), in 2019 we had very seriously planned to rebrand our online channels.
After a laborious process whittling down hundreds of potential names we settled on another alcohol related term, a popular Australian slang term for wine, as we thought that was in the spirit of "The Chaser" but also uniquely Australian.
Literally the only reason we didn't end up rebranding was the whole company fell into an omnishambles in 2020, and we were all too busy both figuratively and literally putting out fires to even think about doing a full company rebrand.
And that, my friends, is how The Chaser through sheer dumb luck, managed to avoid what would have gone down as possibly one of the worst company rebrands in the history of everything, when that same name came to mean something else VERY different a few years later:
