Life After Divorce for Emma May
For awhile now Iâve struggled to figure out what job Emma May couldâve taken up after the divorce as for so many reasons this is SUCH a messy topic.
Firstly, do yâall ever think about how the only reason Fiddleford was even going to Gravity Falls in the first place was to secure more money and provide a better financial future for his family (something heâd always dreamt of doing) only to then lose his memories, leaving the family in shambles, and ultimately leaving them in a worse financial situation with Em as a single mom?? Cause I think about this ALL the time-
To me it only makes sense that Fiddleford would marry someone just as lovely and sweet as him, but also someone who is tough enough for both of them. Letâs all nod our heads and agree that Fiddleford is a pushover and a major people pleaser. Most of his kindness to Ford is him outwardly wanting validation from an old friend he admirers because otherwise he feels useless and unintelligent. Ie Fidds whole, âIâm the builder, if Iâm not building something than Iâm uselessâ. So when he becomes too exhausted to build and Ford grows frustrated with this he tries to make up for it with gifts etc :,). That paired with some chronic anxiety is a recipe for a man who needs someone who can understand that and is willing to help him- his wife. mutually patient and kind as he, is happy to be that for him.
Regardless as far as her career goes, smart as she is, I donât see her as book smart? Rather people smart? Emma May knows how to talk someone up, knows how to make a deal, knows how to defuse a situation, and could probably sell someone their own shirt off their back. Perhaps that could stem from the cult background I explain here and here, but regardless sheâs witty in conversation and great at pretending sheâs an expert on something sheâs never heard of.
Naturally I thought sales would be a good place to put her, maybe rise the ladder that way? One of those late night tv marketers? But it didnât feel like enough? The 80âs were a prime time for women to put themselves into the workplace, incredibly toxic as the environment was for them it didnât stop women from being excited to be there. Ironically itâs the perfect time to divorce? Even if she didnât want to, after the giant homicidal pterodactyl robot it sort of felt like a, âeven if I still love my husband, if I value me and my sons life, I have to do thisâ sort of thing
After taking that into consideration I thought âhonestly bigger is betterâ so I brainstormed harder to figure it out. And after a few lengthy rabbit holes I believe I figured it out. While Fiddleford acts as sort of the Bill Gates of the Gravity Falls universe I thought âwhoâs someone else deeply recognizable in Americas pop culture, but tv related?â And then it hit me, âoh my god what if Emma May acts as the Oprah of the Gravity Falls universe? The Emma Dixon Show?â (In the sense of a beloved tv personality that unexpectedly rose to great fame in the mid 1980s) The-match up felt perfect enough and a mid 80s timeframe feels realistic too as it gives her those three years to struggle and figure something out to provide for her son.
But also hi hello, I needed Emma May to peruse some sense of tv fame for the sake of her last name becoming a synonymous one. Considering I have no idea where miss Emmaline Butternubbins wound up after the fall of Billville (or hell if sheâs even alive some twenty odd years later) but I love the idea of Emmaline recognizing the name âDixonâ, seeing the similarities on tv between Emma May and what she remembers of young Madeline, and wanting to reach out. Mainly out of fear that Ciphertology is rising again and she wants to talk some sense into her, sure, but once they meet or get in contact and Em couldnât be further from that?? Sheâs relieved. Plus the two can bond over the absolute madness of the cult (also Emma May gaining a mother figure that isnât Fiddleford mom? I love Bobbie Jean, but Em needs even more maternal support)
Also also?? I always envisioned Emma May as the type of gal to be super into photography. She just loves taking pictures of memories, people she cares about, and stuff she likes.
So this especially grew once she had Tate, the kid naturally being used to getting his photo taken for scrapbooks, and he loved being photogenic
But once his mom becomes a tv personality he begins to detest the public eye and the cameras of others
Its a hatred he keeps to adulthood especially, having zero tolerance for anyones cameras (other than his moms polaroid camera) pointed towards him
#Oooooh this#It's all coming together#Seriously though there is so very little on Emma May and Tate in the canon and it makes me sad#But this-- this is awesome#And Cipherology connections?? Hell yeah!!#ciphertology#emma may dixon

Iâve talked a lot about Abigale Blackwing and how I characterize her, but not so much about the other Anti-Cipherites⌠Letâs fix that!
Thurburt Mudget Waxstaff III - a clumsy and extremely passionate journalist and wannabe salesman (Couldnât sell jack for shit without help from a certain demonic triangle, forever cursed to have only the worst possible ideas for how to pitch a sale). Can be EXTREMELY petty and spiteful, especially when he feels he or his friends have been wronged. Very pathetic, this man is a mess. Also extremely silly, one of the silliest men you will ever meet. The only reason heâs made it this far in life is because his whimsical nature makes his incompetence more endearing rather than annoying⌠that and his dad is rich. Has a⌠distant relationship with his father. Was always more of a mamaâs boy, but his dad still finances his lifestyle while he tries (and fails) to keep a proper steady job. Only child (derogatory). Incredibly homosexual, never understood other menâs interest in women, was always enraptured by the men in his life. Tries to repress most of these emotions, due to societal pressures and legal restrictions on homosexual acts, but rest assured if he was alive today heâd be whoring it up with damn near any man he could find. Born to be a slightly problematic nepo baby in a giant gay polycule with drama and toxicity levels you could never even dream of, forced to be a failed journalist/salesman in the late 1800s, early 1900s plagued by triangles.
THINGS I ASSOCIATE WITH HIM - hydrangea flowers, rats and mice, snowy weather, jazzy piano music, the color light blue
Horace Broadshoulder - quiet and surprisingly soft spoken. Often used his sheer size as an intimidation tactic against those who have wronged his loved ones. Will not hesitate to punch a motherfucker for the people he cares about. The tough-guy persona easily melts away writhing a few minutes of talking to him, though. Heâs a big sweetheart, very considerate and in-tune with his and otherâs emotions. A lot of his tough-guy persona was created in response to growing up dealing with intense racism as a mixed race man in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, built in order to protect himself. His biggest dream is starting a family and raising the next generation to be smarter, stronger, and of above all else, kinder and more understandable than the current one. Has a bit of a temper towards strangers, but most of his friends and family have never seen him mad. The ones that have knew he was just trying to protect them (even if they think sending a man to the hospital over one rude comment about Horaceâs sister is a bit extreme). Speaking of, Horace grew up with three sisters, one older and two younger. Loves his sisters to death, would give them the moon if he could. Really values family. Jessamine reminds him a lot of one of his younger sisters, gets along very well with her! He and his sisters were raised basically alone by his mother, funded by their wealthy father in secret. His father, as a white man of considerable influence, couldnât risk being seen having relations with a black woman in a time of anti-race-mixing, so he rarely was in his childrenâs or his loverâs lives. Horaceâs poor mother was head over heels for his father, but his father saw her more as a burden then anything else. Horace hates his father, low key, but would never tell his mother that. Horace is also bisexual, but wasnât really aware of that till he met a certain pathetic journalist⌠cough coughâŚ
THINGS I ASSOCIATE WITH HIM - chrysanthemum flowers, the smell of oak wood and freshly baked bread, the color peach
Jessamine Delilah Gulch - takes no shit, very no-nonsense. Raised in poverty and made a name for herself via the traveling western sideshow she joined as a teenager for extra cash. Has much more than âa bitâ of a temper. Used to be known as âTrigger-Jolly Jessieâ in her small home town due to her habit of âaccidentallyâ shooting people in the leg or hip when they did something that pissed her off. Itâs a wonder she never got apprehended for that, actually. Was taught to use a gun at a very young age by her uncle, who raised her along with her aunt. Her father was a drunk and her mother was institutionalized just one year after Jessamineâs birth for âhysteria.â Her uncle (her motherâs brother) and aunt took her in to protect her from her fatherâs drunkenness, even though they didnât have a lot of money to spare to raise a child that wasnât technically theirâs. Has a massive respect for her uncle and aunt, but couldnât stay with them for longer than what was absolutely necessary due to her not wanting to burden them. Always dreamed of becoming a famous singer and actress, but settled for being a sideshowâs sharpshooter in order to make ends meet. Many describe her as âsevereâ or âfrigid,â but she absolutely melts around those she trusts, especially her dearest Abigale. Abbey loves her far more passionately and sweetly than any man could, sheâs sure of that! Absolutely a lesbian, probably also on the grey-romantic spectrum too. No one has ever nor could ever catch her heart like Abigale has. She also has a puppy! Her name is Rosie, she was a mutt Jessamine found in her time on the road, and decided to take in. Sheâs a feisty little thing, but such a sweetheart!
THINGS I ASSOCIATE WITH HER - royston turquoise stone, daffodil flowers, hunting dogs, sherif stars, revolver pistols (specifically the U.S. Cavalry 1873 Henry Nettleton Revolver), the color grass green
Father Tinsley OâPimm - a drunkard and a former man of the faith with no faith left in him. His family was middle-class and severely religious and suspected him of being gay at a young age, so they sorta forced him into training to be and eventually becoming a priest in order to âfixâ him, or at the very least prevent him from doing gay shit. Never knew what he wanted to do when he grew up, so he sorta allowed his parents to set his life up for him without much complaint, even though he really didnât like being a priest. Is now incredibly bitter and jaded about life in general, and no longer speaks to his family. Took up drinking in secret to ease the agony of living a life that was never truly his, but was eventually found out and excommunicated from the church. Clings desperately to his former-priest status, not because he truly believes in God nor because he liked being a priest, but rather just because he doesnât know what else he would have been if not that. This man is going through it. Arguably the most sane of the Anti-Cipherites, when heâs sober anyway. Also the oldest, and often feels like he has to wrangle the rest of the society in at times. Extremely starved for love and affection. Discovers a love of gossip while talking to Abigale, as well as his love of men through two particular men in the society⌠guess his parents were right about one thing. Would never dare act on these emotions under normal circumstances, and starts actually sobering up a bit in order to prevent any âslipsâ from himself under the influence.
THINGS I ASSOCIATE WITH HIM - pomegranates, candles, golden jewelry, ruby stones, pigeons, the color red
Abigale Blackwing - eccentric, loud, and infectiously passionate. Born to a wealthy couple, her mother died tragically in childbirth, leaving her architect father to raise her alone. She was his world, and he did anything and everything to set her up for the most happy and fulfilling life possible. Crossdressed for much of her adolescence in order to sneak into prestigious engineering schools that did not accept women, backed up by documents her father forged for her. Completely fell in love with machines, wanted to dedicate her entire life to making mechanical marvels the likes of which no one has ever seen before! Youngest of the Anti-Cipherites, and also the most enthusiastic. Besides machinery and mechanics, Abigale also has an interest in fashion, as well as a love of gossip. God, she loves to gossip. Sheâll talk your ear off for hours about some juicy new scoop she found out about that day, and when sheâs done, sheâll talk your OTHER ear off about her newest invention and how it works. No sense of self-preservation, sheâs blown herself up and set herself on fire for the sake of her inventions more times than she can count. Itâs a wonder sheâs even still alive. No regard for the law, she is ruled by her own wants and thatâs it. Very touchy, especially for a woman in the Edwardian era. Always holding or grabbing or patting the shoulder of her friends. Also prone to playfully punching or swatting her pals while joking around, unfortunately also prone to forgetting her strength and accidentally hurting them (âOh dear, Iâm so sorry Thurburt, I hadnât meant to hit you so hard!â âOh no no no, thatâs quite alright Abigale! Youâve got quite the arm there, haha! Ha⌠owâŚâ). Knew from a very young age that she had no interest in men, and a LOT of interest in women. Tried to court a few young women in her crossdressing days, but always felt terribly about having to lie to them about her true identity. When she met Jessamine, she fell completely head-over-heels crazy in love with her after only a few days. Obsessed with that woman, would litterally blot out the sun for her if she asked.
THINGS I ASSOCIATE WITH HER - allium flowers, gears and mechanisms, birds (specifically corvids like crows, ravens, and magpies), the moon, comets, the color purple
#Ooh yes more lore!#In always happy to learn more about anti-cipher crew#Also that âthings I associate withâ for each person is an incredible idea. There are so many cool details!!#anti-cipher society#gravity falls

đâđ¨Ciphertology & The Dixonsđâđ¨
SoooooâŚEmma Mayâs family was involved in a cult, right? Let me elaborate. As a fellow creative I have been known on many occasions to forget details big and small about my own world, but names? No, names are never something I tend to duplicate unless for a very specific thematic or world building reason. So color me stoked when I was curiously learning about Billâs cult arc in the 1950âs and found one of his first followers was a young girl with the surname, you guessed it, Dixon!!
Considering Alex Hirsch is very purposeful with things and little hints, while also leaving the audience to figure things out for themselves while he sits back and laughs, I canât help but feel the surname Dixon is a bit TOO coincidental in this instance. From what we see, Ciphertology and the followers were a mash of a bunch of real life cult references while doing the usual Hirsch thing of filtering Bill into a concept perfectly well.
All in all itâs a very interesting thing, but what I found more interesting were the people involved. Sure you have the puppet leader, Silas Birchtree and a bunch of other out there names, but amongst sits a simple âMadeline DixonââŚ.. Alex Hirsch Iâm going to screAM :D
From what we learn, after the cult is forcibly disbanded by the US government and every trace of the town is wiped off of maps and history books, the people are spread throughout the country and given opportunities to start life over again. Not everyone followed that however and some continued to follow the Bill Cipher cult. And honestly I canât help finding myself bouncing back to the very concept that is-
What if Emma May Dixon grew up in a recovering cult family? What if her family still believed in the cults teachings like some and practiced it in secret at home? And if that is true how am I meant to feel towards the idea that her future husband, Fiddleford McGucket, would become a cult leader himself all because of the very thing that was the foundation of her own cultish upbringing?
Honestly if thatâs what Alex was shooting for, Iâm calling him a genius cause thatâs such a fascinating idea to work with. The concept that Bill has personally affected and rooted himself so deeply into the show and itâs characters that even those we donât get to see still have dealt with him to some degree.
It just all feels too perfect too. The surname Dixon implies enough, thanks to Alexâs upfront and to the point naming, that Emma May too is a southerner like her husband. Or at the very least sheâs in that farmy side of the country. And where did Ciphertology come from? Orchard Lake, Kansas. Madeline Dixon very well could be Emma Mayâs aunt or older sister considering the cult began in 1952. And assuming Emâs the same age as Fiddleford and the Stan twins then we can assume vaaaaageuly that sheâd be born in 1955. Meaning sheâd be either growing up in that recovering environment or indoctrinated into it.
We can assume well enough then that she didnât follow the cults teachings considering she seems well adjusted with her family, living in Palo Alto, but it also kinda reaffirms why sheâd be so quick to throw divorce on the table once she sees Fiddlefordâs memory wiped condition. That on top of we can only assume his behavior was alarming and erratic and a far cry from the personality of her husband that she was used to (especially when you consider bRO made a homicidal pterodactyl robot because he was so distraught and upset towards the idea of being divorced..like yeah man..that might solidify her decision my guy..)
But if she ever saw the symbol of Billâs eye or anything in relation to him anywhere in Gravity Falls?? Especially the Society of the Blind eye symbol spray painted all over? After either learning to fear Bill or worship him in her upbringing depending on what their family did after the cult was disbanded? I wouldnât blame her for high tailing it out of there and worrying for her and her sons life- (Fiddleford..Emma May..I am your biggest fans, but yâall have me bonkers sometimes) But also consider how most ex cult members naturally want to give the very opposite traumatic life that they lived to their child? If Emma May were to see semblances of what she relates to Ciphertology in Gravity Falls, I donât have a hard time believing she was getting tF out of there for the sake of Tateâs well being & future
In short- hi, I now believe Emma Mayâs family was in a cult and the very idea of that will ruminate with me for awhile :D But also double hi?? Madeline DIxon looks vaguely similar to how I envisioned and draw my Emma May design? Coincidence, I think nOT :P
#Hello????#This is brilliant-#Oh my god#I am also just endlessly fascinated by this insane cult so the more there is to it the better#Ciphertology

Oooh yeah Abigale Blackwing!! Crazy early 1900s science woman? Hell yeah!
I know there isn't much on her (or any of the Anti-Cipherites for that matter) in the book, but I just think she's neat. I do love me a woman of science.
I also just gotta say, I love how you just went "Fine.. I'll do it myself" in making anti-cipher society stuff. Your art and backstories (especially for Abigale) are keeping this niche corner of nerds well fed--thank you for your service o7
