“thank you for a wonderful night, and for an amazing meal,” your mother-in-law said, reaching out to gently hold your hand. “you really outdid yourself, dear. it was so lovely to feel so at home.”

“thank you,” you replied, feeling pride at their kind words.

as they headed out, jaehyun lingered beside you, one hand resting on the small of your back. with the evening winding down and the house now quiet, the thought of parting ways tugged at you both.

“do you want to stay the night yuno?” you asked softly, glancing up at him with a hopeful smile.

“i’d love to,” he says, leaning down to whisper in your ear. “let me ask first, okay, baby?” he adds with a soft smile before walking over to where both your parents were, somehow still managing to keep the conversation going even after bidding their goodbyes.

jaehyun walks over to the car and clears his throat lightly to catch their attention. “would it be okay if i stayed the night?” he asks with that familiar politeness in his tone. 

your parents, still deep in conversation with his, pause and turn toward him. your mom is the first to respond, her eyes softening with a smile. “of course, jaehyun. you’re family,” she says warmly as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. your dad nods in agreement, not leaving his usual playful tone. “you’ve been here enough times, son. no need to ask,” he adds with a wink, though there’s definitely a fatherly fondness there.

jaehyun nods earnestly, meeting your dad’s gaze. “of course, thank you.” he responds respectfully and slightly leans to bow.

he turns to his own parents, who have been watching the exchange from the car. 

your in-laws glance at each other, a bit uncertain but not wanting to intrude. “are you sure it’s alright?” your mother-in-law asks, though it’s clear she’s not trying to hold him back.

your mom laughs softly, reassuring them, “don’t worry about it! jaehyun will always be welcome here.”

your dad pats jaehyun on the back and ushers him back inside before his parents can say anything. “go inside, i don’t want to hear anything else,” he says, tone playful but leaving no room for arguments. it reminded jaehyun of how he’d spend nights here as a kid — no questions asked, just a place he belonged.

as the final goodbyes were said and your in-laws drove off, you and jaehyun walked back inside, a comfortable silence settling between you two. 

you glanced at him, a small smile forming as you let out a soft laugh.

“guess i’m not going anywhere tonight, huh?” jaehyun said, his tone light but carrying a hint of excitement.

you grinned, nudging him lightly. “looks like it,” you replied, voice soft. “i’m glad you're staying.”

his smile widened, eyes warm as he looked down at you, taking in the moment. “me too,” he said quietly, his hand gently brushing against yours as you both made your way inside your room.

your mom’s voice called out from the kitchen, warm and familiar. “don’t stay up too late, you two,” she teased. “get some rest! you both need it.”

your dad, from the living room, chimed in with a wink. “no late-night shenanigans now,” he added, his voice containing an unusual seriousness.

you laughed but couldn’t help but whine. “we won’t! goodnight!” you called, and jaehyun added, “goodnight, thank you!” through giggles as he gave a small bow of his head.

as you reached your room, jaehyun’s eyes softened, his smile gentle. “i’m really glad i’m staying the night,” he murmured, his voice tender with affection.

you smiled back, heart swelling with warmth. “you act as if you weren’t over literally the other day,” you teased, stepping into the room and turning to face him. 

“that was before we were married though,” he said with a pout “so this is all new and special.”

before you could say anything else, jaehyun swept you into his arms, lifting you effortlessly off the ground.

you gasped in surprise, a burst of laughter escaping you as he spun you around in a circle. his arms held you close, his warmth grounding you.

jaehyun’s laugh was soft and full of love as he brought you back down, steadying you. “i’ve got you,” he murmured, his voice low and affectionate as he pressed a soft kiss to your lips. “you’re my home, you know that?” he whispered as he pulled away.

you smiled up at him, the sweetness of his words making everything feel so right. “i know, you’re mine too.” you whispered, your heart full, the comfort of being with him making the world feel just right.

“i love you dandelion.” he said leaning in to capture your lips once again.

the soft rustle of fallen leaves beneath your feet matched the gentle rhythm of your synced steps. jaehyun’s hand brushed against yours before his fingers quickly slipped between yours, a habit he was sure was instinct by now.

“you still feel weird about tonight?” he broke the silence first with a soft voice, glancing over at you as you walked. you looked up at him and smiled, shaking your head softly. “not anymore. i think you’re right, it is just another dinner, and i’m with you. it’s nothing new.”

jaehyun smiled back, his thumb lightly grazing the back of your hand. “good. i’m glad you’re not nervous anymore, dandelion. you always look so pretty when you’re not stressed.”

a soft laugh escaped you. “i don’t look pretty when i’m stressed?” you teased. he let out a soft laugh, his lips curling into a teasing grin. "oh, you definitely look something when you’re stressed," he said in between giggles.

you nudged him playfully, but before you could respond, you were already at the door of your childhood home. the warm aroma of the dinner you helped prepare greeted the two of you as you entered, and you were immediately greeted by your families.

your parents were already chatting with your in-laws, both families mingling comfortably. the moment they saw you two, a chorus of teasing and laughter followed.

“look at the newlyweds, all matchy-matchy,” your mom said, grinning ear to ear. “are you two planning to turn this into a fashion show?” your father-in-law chimed in, eyes twinkling with amusement. “you really do match perfectly.”

you and jaehyun exchanged a glance, and despite the teasing, you both couldn’t help but laugh. his arm naturally found its way around your waist as he leaned in to whisper in your ear, “i think they’re just jealous of how cute we are together.”

“oh, definitely,” you replied with a playful grin, before turning to your parents. “we always match, on purpose, you know.”

“like we didn’t notice,” your mother-in-law said with a wink. your cheeks warmed, but the teasing didn’t bother you. it felt comfortable, like your marriage… full of love.

there was something about these moments, surrounded by both families, that made him feel even more grateful for everything you two shared.

your dad and father-in-law both exchanged amused glances. “i see we’ve got the chef of the night over here,” your father-in-law said, eyeing you with a grin. "everything smells amazing." “yeah, dandelion, you’ve got some real cooking skills,” jaehyun added, nudging you gently. “this all looks too good for just a regular dinner. i am so beyond lucky”

you felt a little shy at the attention but couldn’t help but smile. “it’s nothing, really. just helped out in the kitchen.”

you excused yourself to the kitchen, helping your mother bring today’s menu from pots to plates. you felt jaehyun’s gaze from across the dining room, and when you turned, you were met with a soft, affectionate smile that made your heart flutter. watching you move so easily in your own space, surrounded by family, filled him with a quiet pride and love that he didn’t bother to hide. he mouthed, “you’re amazing,” his eyes never leaving you, a warmth in his gaze that said more than words ever could.

dinner was served soon after, and the atmosphere was just as cozy as you’d imagined, despite the nerves eating at you. the conversations and laughter were proof that the night would be well enjoyed.

at one point, as both your parents brought up embarrassing childhood stories, he reached under the table to gently grab your hand, his thumb circling against your skin. "you really did make this perfect, you know?" he murmured softly, his eyes warm as they held yours.

it felt comforting, knowing that no matter how many dinners you’d have in the future, it would always feel as special each time.

the crisp autumn evening air brushed against your skin as you fiddled with a loose thread on your sleeve. you sat beside jaehyun on the park bench, watching the last hints of sunlight dip below the horizon. even though your parents had hosted jaehyun's family countless times before, this evening felt different — it was the first dinner with both families since you’d become husband and wife.

jaehyun seemed to notice your nerves. he shifted closer, slipping his hand into yours and giving it a reassuring squeeze. “still feeling nervous, honey?” he asked, his voice warm and steady, contrasting the brisk air around the both of you.

“just a little,” you admitted, trying to laugh it off. “it’s silly, i know, it’s just our families, but… tonight feels unusually special, you know?”

he chuckled softly, tracing slow circles on the back of your hand with his thumb. “yeah, i know what you mean. it is a new chapter, for us, and them too, even though we’ve known each other forever.”

you smiled, leaning your head on his shoulder. “remember when we used to talk about this? back when we were kids, wondering what it’d be like if we actually got married someday?” he laughed, low and comforting. “feels like yesterday, we thought getting married would make us all serious and grown-up… but here we are, still sneaking out to the park like kids.”

“some things never change,” you said, smiling up at him. he smirked, nudging you. “and yet, some things really have.” he lifted your hands slightly, tapping your ring finger with a soft smile. “we’re actually married.” you stifle a giggle, “still feels unreal sometimes,” you admitted, your smile softening. “but in a good way.” he brought your hand up to his lips, giving it a gentle kiss. “same here,” he said with a small smile. “but you know what? no matter how new this feels, it’s still just you and me, the same as always.”

his words calmed you, his familiar warmth bringing you back to yourself. “yeah. we didn’t magically change overnight.” you laughed a little. “i guess i just want it all to feel right.”

“it already does,” he replied confidently, giving your hand another gentle squeeze. “plus, i bet our families are just as excited, and nervous, as we are.”

“thanks for reminding me,” you murmured, grateful for his steadying presence. “always,” he replied, his voice light with a playful grin. “now, let’s go to our very first family dinner as mr. and mrs. jeong.”

you laughed, nudging him. “you know i’m still ‘Mrs. l/n jeong,’ right? i kept both names, remember?” he grinned, dimples poking out with a hint of pride in his eyes. “i know, and i love that. it feels like the best of both of us.” you felt your cheeks burn up, smiling as his words settled in. “exactly what i hoped for.”

leaning in, he pressed a soft kiss to your forehead, lingering for a moment as you closed your eyes, enjoying the quiet warmth. when he pulled back, he gave your hand a gentle tug. “come on, mrs l/n jeong. our families are waiting, and they’re going to be wondering where we ran off to.”
