Worldtravelbudget.com Today was a special day. We went to an elephant sanctuary and played with some elephants. We opted for a half day tour and were picked up at 7:30 in the morning and driven out of the city of Chiangmai about 1 hour or so into the jungle of Thailand. We went swerving through the windy and bumpy roads in the back of a truck bus type thing called a "songthaew." Its funny that we just get in and ride in these things with no seatbelts when there is no way in hell it would be legal in the States. But when in Asia. We wound through the rolling hills of beautiful Chiangmai passing farmland and local shops. We approach a dirt road in the jungle that is questionable and we begin to be tossed around like the driver was making a tourist salad. Finally we arrive at the santuary and it is a truely magically place. At Chiangmai Elephant Sanctuary they have three elephants Grandma, Tik, and Tac. While we were there we fed the elephants bananas, gave them a mud bath, and cleaned them in a stream. They are extremely gentle and sweet creatures. I couldn't stop smiling being around their calming and playful demeter. After we walked through the jungle to a beautiful waterfall where we cleaned up and got to chat with our fello travelers (Canada, Belgium, Netherland,and Switzerland). After a Thai lunch we got to say a goodbye to the elephants and headed home down that windy path. Cost was $1,425 Baht per person all in.
