saving for later, but I also recommend to anyone who loves reading fanfics like these, to check out a zhongchi fanfic "a sight for sore eyes" by ToumeiKyoudai, honestly the best and most lively genshin fanfic I've ever read. so many hc I now hc because of that fanfic, and personally imo the most true to canon (and fanon) balance in portrayal of characters I've ever seen.

I’ve been playing GENSHIN IMPACT for over a year now and reading a bit of fic here and there, mostly of the Tartali and Zhongli&Venti variety, but then Sumeru hit and oh hey Alhaitham is an amazing unit in a quickbloom team and then Kaveh hurricaned his way into my heart and oh no suddenly I was in love and absolutely tearing my way through every bit of Haikaveh I could get my hands on because christ there’s no way Hoyoverse isn’t writing them that way on purpose. I mean, I’m already a sucker for Old Married Couple type bickering, but then you give me the undercurrent of how much they genuinely mean to each other? How much Alhaitham is genuinely caring about how self-destructive Kaveh is? How Kaveh just absolutely will not shut up about Alhaitham, even the other characters are like “You talk about him so much that it’s like he’s been here with us all night.”? Yeah, of course I fell in love. So, here, cry about a gacha game having beautifully designed characters with just the right types of personality and funny banter that know how to knock me the fuck out with both delight and genuine feelings about idiots in love. Or just old elemental grandpas who annoy the shit out of each other because they’re both several millennia old and nobody else understands their weird friendship. I’m having a great time and I’m going to make that everyone else’s problem. a/n: i swear i hate angst with my every being, i don't get how i keep writing them. weird. english is not my first language so do watch out for errors!

nobody expected albedo to react the way he did when he lost you.

up on the cold mountain air of dragonspine, he watched klee running along to god knows where bombing everything out of her way. the little girl blessed with luck would've been fine on her own but klee was still a child, one that needed constant supervision.

albedo was grateful as you volunteered to bring back his sister, something that twisted into regret later on. the gift of divination does not exist in teyvat, but with albedo and his thirst for the secrets teyvat may hide, he considered making it with his bare hands. the purpose was not to benefit him nor does it have anything to do with his master's last wish for him.

no, everything was for you, for he wished to had foreseen what happened next.

an ear-deafening explosion ensued by a loud bellow rang across the snow-covered mountains, not too far from camp. the disturbance threatened to trigger an avalanche, though albedo hoped not. death by hypothermia or suffocation from being buried under the snow would be the last thing they want to happen.

"what was that?" amidst the panic, sucrose lost her grip on a test tube, fortunately empty. the glass shattered, one that mirrored albedo's heart—if he had one, upon seeing you run back towards camp, an unconscious klee on your arms.

you only blinked and the chief alchemist already stood in front of you. "i managed to...she's unharmed," you managed to say, voice choking in pain. "to make sure, please check."

amidst the chaos and adrenaline, albedo wordlessly took klee from your arms and hastily turned back to camp, almost colliding with sucrose. however, the assistant directed her worries not on klee, but you.

"Y/N?!"

the horror laced in her voice set all the alarms on albedo's head. he was almost afraid to turn, certain that he will not like whatever he will find. his eyes met sucrose's, a silent plea.

the girl took klee from his arms but still, she stayed glued on her spot, her eyes not leaving your form crumpled to the ground.

finally, albedo turned, facing his worst nightmares.

red coated the white snow that crunched beneath your boots. your form knelt to the ground with your head hung low and your arms hanging limply on your sides. you were pale and far too cold despite the thick fur jacket that you wore.

albedo reached behind your back and as if your skin was searing, he immediately withdrew. the metallic smell of blood filled his nose and his eyes could only see nothing but red. from rage? sorrow? albedo wasn't sure for he felt everything but joy with the state you are in.

a huge gash decorated your skin, the tattered coat did nothing to hide how wounded you are. but worst of all, albedo couldn't hear your breathing.

"...Y/N?" he called, his voice trembling as if the coldness of the area finally got to him.

alas, you no longer responded. the only thing albedo could do was carry your corpse back to camp. he placed a hand on your lifeless eyes, closing it to signify your departure from the land of the living.

albedo was never the same.

he smiled and never blamed klee, that was the last thing he would want, you would want. albedo will forever be grateful to you for saving his little sister, even at the cost of your own life.

yet his eyes that were usually hard to read now were devoid of emotion. the smile he offered to the others didn't match how dead his eyes looked. for the day he lost you was the day he died inside.

even when albedo exited dragonspine, everything still felt cold and bitter. teyvat was just never the same when it lost you. paintings upon paintings of your face filled his office. sucrose worried how he spent more time desperately remembering every detail of your existence than working on the lab.

kaeya and the others in the knights of favonius could only do so little to pry the alchemist off his pen and paper. one time the cavalry captain urged albedo to go out, the walls of the alchemist's office were filled with life-like paintings of your face, down from your laugh to when you cried.

kaeya felt a chill run down his spine at how paintings of you seemed to follow him wherever he went inside the room. "it's like you're alive," he muttered to himself but didn't go unnoticed by the blonde.

"albedo, your students and the lab need you," kaeya started. he thought it would've taken longer and more convincing for albedo to stand up but the blonde did. turning to kaeya who flinched at the crazed gleam in his eyes, albedo smiled.

"yes, with alchemy, we can create life, no?"

kaeya did not like that one bit but albedo was already out and about before he could ask him to elaborate.

the next few days, albedo was back like nothing happened. he was eerily calm and the gentleness in his tone did not leave his students disturbed. sucrose found how he was obsessed with the notion of bringing back life via the number of poor test subjects he'd mercilessly killed, finding ways on bringing them back from the dead.

"life..." sucrose muttered to herself as a thought suddenly crossed her mind. ever since they left dragonspine, she had never caught even a single glimpse of your corpse. where did albedo burry your body?

and as if reading her thoughts, albedo looked up from his one hundredth dead rat and looked at sucrose in the eye. then he smiled.

for you albedo would gladly break the laws of the world and anger the gods. only for you.

end note: is albedo kinda yan here? i don't really know, just that he's obsessed in bringing you back. i hope i made albedo creepy enough?
