This is very consciously echoing a shot from Episode III of Anakin coming in that I always loved. Just a beautiful graphic shot that George did that we wanted to do a callback to. — Rian Johnson, The Last Jedi director commentary

What is this nonsense argument I keep seeing excusing Rey of being ridiculously overpowered by claiming that fans have no right to say that because both Anakin and Luke were overpowered?
Um.
No.
Anakin and Luke were not overpowered.
Anakin and Luke are both written to have flaws, weaknesses, and failures.
Anakin loses just as many fights as he wins them. In the movies and even in TCW, he loses fights. This so-called Chosen One of the Force couldn’t take Dooku alone for more than a few minutes before promptly losing an arm at the age of 20. He eagerly wrongly judges Obi-Wan Kenobi’s skills, losing the rest of his limbs and ending up burnt to a crisp as a result.
Not to mention, Darth Vader, fails in his fight against Luke and, once again, loses a limb.
Does that make him a bad fighter? No. He’s a damn good fighter.
Anakin is not overpowered in his piloting skills either. If there is one thing TPM does quite well, it is developing the idea that Anakin is a phenomenal young pilot at the mere age of 10 through the podrace. Even with those skills, Anakin still struggles with the mechanics of the Naboo ship later in the film. Even though he’s supposed to be a great mechanic and “good at fixing things”!
Luke is barely able to acquire his lightsaber through the force in the Wampa cave in ESB and loses a limb to Darth Vader even after studying under the great Master Yoda for months.
Both of them were in need of training, both of them took years to perfect their skills, and both of them were still learning at that point.
You’re telling me that a young Anakin would have been able to fight Darth Maul in TPM and win? Or Luke would have been able to fight Vader in ANH and win?
Nah uh. Hell. No.
The thing about Rey is that she is a culmination of all of the best traits of past Star Wars characters that were most likely learned and perfected by that particular character. Most with little to no explanation.
She’s a good pilot like Anakin and Han with supposedly no knowledge of how to fly and no reason given to the audience of how she would know how to fly a ship in the first place.
She’s good at fixing things like Anakin. Now…this one actually makes the most sense. Sort of. She has spent her life taking apart and cleaning machinery. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean she immediately knows how things work when they’re put together or what their function is. She fixes the Millenium Falcon. How did she know how to do that? How did he even know where that thing was? Not every ship in the Star Wars universe is designed the same. In fact, most look vastly different.
She’s good at Jedi Mind Tricks like Obi-Wan even though this is a skill that many Jedi canonically struggled with. It was Obi-Wan’s special talent, so to speak. He just had a knack for it and Rey just…knows how to do it on a whim with no prior knowledge of how to use the Force? Besides, how does Rey even know what a Mind Trick is? Did that come in the Jedi mythology textbook along with The Many Adventures of the Legendary Luke Skywalker?
She’s a good shot like Leia even though she’s never once held a gun as far as we know and Leia has most likely been trained for many years since she is, you know…a princess and has probably undergone extensive combat and self-defense training?
I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s suddenly good at handling politics like Padme in the next movie since she’s obviously going to be some sort of leader of the Resistance/Rebellion.
Not to mention that Rey SWIMS in TLJ when the audience is lead to believe that she has never seen rain or a large body of water up until that point in her life and you’re telling me she knows how to SWIM!?
At this point in time, Rey has no weakness. Not one. She also does not have an ability or trait that is uniquely hers. If her character cannot be broken then there is no room for growth. We have not seen her fail once even though the running-theme throughout TLJ was failure.
…
Alright…I guess she failed at bringing Ben Solo back to the light but she still exhibits no weaknesses and, before you bash me for saying this thinking I’m a man hating on a strong female character: I’m an adult woman who would say the exact same thing about a male character but, so far, no male character throughout the SW movies has exhibited this problem. Even Kylo Ren has weaknesses, insecurities, and known failures which is probably why people are connecting with him more than Rey after TLJ. He’s a phenomenal character is that film. Rey…not the best writing.

I, too, have to center myself before I destroy my enemies.

Coming out as a slave, and imma join the jedi
gotta make qui-gonn proud, because i’m way too old
it was only a sith, how did it end up like this
it was only a sith, it was only a sith
now she woke from her sleep
and i’m catching a cab
but my lead’s up in smoke
and she’s taking a stand
now mace windu is dead
im becoming a sith
and a hood’s on my head
but she’s clutching her neck, now
he takes off his dress, now
“we were bros”
i just got cooked, it’s killing me
i can’t feel my toes…
JEAAALOUSY, turned me into a machine
killing off all the jedi, choking out those who survive
but it’s just the PRICE I PAY, DESTINY IS ALL I SEEK
TAKE AWAY THIS REBEL SPYYY
‘CAUSE I’M MR. DARK SIDE
