Ma’on

What does it mean to be “home?”

Is it a place, a person, or a feeling?

When meditating on this name of God, we come to understand it as a blessed combination of all three.

Ma’on, a Hebrew word with a diversity of applications, is used by Moses, in Psalm 90:1, with the connotation of a refuge or dwelling. Hence, that great leader of Israel, inspired by the Holy Spirit, imbues the word with righteous meaning—looks upon the LORD, as his place of comfort and rest.

Believers in Christ are called to come unto God, as their “Dwelling Place”—to find peace and everlasting life in Who He is. This world is not our home; and, its broken solutions to personal fulfillment cannot satisfy. Our purpose is not found in money, education, or lust. And, when we run after the temporary enjoyment of sin, we find ourselves less content than before. It is only by leaning, fully, into Him—pursuing God with all we are—that we learn to walk in sanctification and grow in grace.

Although the ultimate home, for the child of God, is in Heaven, we can find “home,” right now, in the One Who makes His home within us—in the Spirit, Who lights our souls on fire, to seek His face; in the Son, Who intercedes for us in the courts of Glory; and in the Father, Whose powerful and merciful Hand brings safety and direction to every area of being.

There is unrivaled wealth in that quiet comfort, which dwelling in the LORD, brings. Allow Him, today, to shelter you in His warm embrace and nestle down into Ma’on, God as “Our Dwelling Place.”
