John had been offered a shop above the tearooms,it was huge but needed some work.
Individual box’s were made to hold the various settings, so customers would have an idea how their dollshouse could look.
We had a Market,a Pub an Art Gallery,a Witches Coven and many more.
The shop came alive, music fitting for a magical space was played. Customers began to appear, we stocked wallpaper, curtains, chimneys that smoked.
One morning a very odd looking lady walked into the shop, wearing a black Basque and long net gloves. ‘ I’m Val,’ she said, ‘ I make character dolls, any thing you want I can make’.
Val lived in Felixstowe, so we went down to see her the following week.
Her bungalow was painted Purple, with Barbie dolls glued onto the roof. A life size Snow White stood in her garden with the Seven Dwarves.
She was a total eccentric, I loved her.
We made an order for several television personalities.
The following week she appeared with a box of dolls, she was sporting a new very white set of teeth, that she had just made from Polymer clay.
The dolls were fab, I had never seen anything like them. Pat Butcher, Manuel ( from Faulty Towers) a butcher, Baker, and a lady of the night.
They all sold very quickly, and Val became a regular in the shop, she always had a list of dolls to be getting on with.
As for me I had always wanted to live at the seaside, so I would take myself off to Southend and take photos of the sort of house I wanted.
I loved the big Guest Houses with the bay windows, I decided to ask John if he would build me one, ( it took a long while, as he was so busy)
But eventually my house started to take shape. It was huge, built from the photos I has taken.

My Adventures in the world of Dolls Houses.
In 2003 my husband and I were wandering around a garden centre and we came across a man working out of an old open fronted shed.
He was building an enormous dolls house, I stopped to watch, dolls houses were a new thing to me, only ever having seen them in toy shops. After a while I asked about the house. “ can you tell me about this house?” I asked.
“ It’s a painted lady” was the reply. We continued to watch, the House was so wonderful, with a huge turret, and it’s stood well over 110 cm tall.
Eventually, I asked if it was for sale, “nope” came the answer.
He wasn’t a friendly man so we wandered away. But I kept thinking of the house ,so we went back a couple of week later, and found out his name was John.
Nothing more had been done as he was working on another house. I asked again and got the same answer.
After about a month he became used to us going and watching him ,and he told us the house was for his partner, but she didn’t want it.
Still he refused to sell me the house. So I hatched a plan.
I asked my brother if he would go and ask if it was for sale, off he went and returned with the house in his van.
I was stunned, my brother offered John £100 and he accepted, saying he was fed up with looking at it.
As the house was half finished I needed some wood and other bits, so back we went.
“ Hello, I said, where is the house you were working on?
“ Sold it to some bloke” came the reply.
‘Yes’ I said, ‘that bloke was my brother.’ He turned round, and stared at me. ‘ Do you want a job’ he asked.
That was the beginning of my adventure.
