“Is Kalim really a billionaire? What about you, boss?” Kore asked suddenly
“Did he not tell you?” Floyd asked, surprised. Kalim hadn’t ever been one to really try and hide his wealth.
“Well, I knew he was rich before but that’s like… really rich.”
“Really really really rich, actually”
“It’s kinda scary to think about. How did they even get that much?!” Kore huffed, as if offended by the number. Floyd laughed.
“That’s for him to tell you, not me.”
“And you!” she turned on him “You just have a coffee shop! How can you afford this, I saw the prices, this meal is going to cost over 50000 madol!” Floyd blinked at her slowly.
“Kid… 50000 madol isn’t a lot of money…” he chuckled into his plate
“It is if you’re not rich! That’s my whole months rent!”
“That’s it? Where the hell do you live?” He grimaced, thinking of all the low budget apartments he’d seen in his earlier work.
“That’s not the point! Damn you rich people!”
“Ah, who knew that my sweet part-timer could be so cruel to hate me” He mocked, pretending to cry into his dinner.
“I never said I hated you! I just...man… having money must be nice” She pouted, poking at the meat she had yet to eat.
“I can give you a raise if you want”
“No no no, you don’t need to do that boss! It’s okay! I’m only a student, I really couldn't ask!” She stammered, stuffing her face with meat so she could avoid answering any more questions.
“Alright, if you say so. But if you need anything you can just ask. Or ask your boyfriend he’s real generous.”
“He’s not my boyfriend” She muttered, muffled through a mouthful of meat.
“You keep telling yourself that, Kid.” Floyd smiled at her. She’d just dipped her toes into the world that he and Kalim existed in, she wasn’t prepared for any of it. She’d be okay though, she was tougher than she looked.

“D-did Kalim say I was his girlfriend…?” She stammered, not wanting to look up from her plate.
“Hmmm I wonder…” Floyd teased “It might be rude to tell you the things he told me in confidence. Hmmmmmmm” He grinned at her as she chewed her lip. He could tell she wanted to press for more info about Kalim, but also knew that she didn’t want him to tease her for her reactions.
“Ahhh it’s okay then, forget I asked” She blushed into her dinner, determined to not look at him.
“But you did ask… and I do know he’s preeeeeetty~ into you”
“Well you’re probably just saying that to be nice”
“Nooooope~ he said you were reaaaaaaally sweet when you-”
“Don’t say any more!!! I don’t wanna know what he said! It's okay!” Kore knew she was red again. The last time she’d spent time with Kalim they’d kissed and she was embarrassed knowing that her boss knew the details. Floyd sighed. There was always a line with Kore between when she’d get flustered and talk too much or when she’d clam up and not talk at all. He’d pushed her too far into clam territory.
“Ehhhh you’re being too shy about it. Kalim’s a loud guy, you can be loud about him too”
“Really!?” She beamed at him, she’d been bursting at the seams wanting to talk about her time spent with Kalim but every time she mentioned it at home her roommates started grumbling about not wanting to know about her love life.
“I guess…” Floyd groaned hesitantly, knowing he may have just opened a can of worms he’d never be able to close again.
“Okay! So the other day he took me out on the river on a pole boat! Isn’t that so cool! And after that-” She detailed their entire date, from start to finish, including every single minute detail she remembered. As he drove her home with her recounting their third date he sighed inwardly, wishing for the clam back.

“Hasn’t your boyfriend brought you places like this before?”
Kore felt the colour rise on her cheeks. She hadn’t even gone on a proper date with Kalim yet, no way he’d take her somewhere like this so easily!
“Is that a no? Daaaamn” Floyd whistled, pushing her through the doors. “Billionaire playboy can’t even bring his girlfriend for a nice dinner. I’m gonna have to sit him down and have a talk on how to treat a girl” He laughed.
“B-billionaire?!” Kore stammered as they were ushered to their seats. “G-girlfriend?!” She was redder than the raw beef laid out on the plates before them as she tried to process the new information.
“Hmmmm?” Floyd pried, nodding to the chef to start grilling their meats for them. “If you’re saying he’s not your boyfriend… does that mean you two have just had s-”
“No! Umm! Please stop, this is too embarrassing!” Kore begged, biting her lip. Her attention was focused on the skilled hands of the chef, she knew that Floyd was teasing her but she couldn’t stand to see his grin.
“Aha~” He was having fun with her. Kore always got flustered when talking about Kalim, and from the chats he’d had with the younger man he knew nothing had happened yet. Well, almost nothing.
“Why don’t you give the girl some slack, Floyd. She’s clearly flustered” The chef smirked as he served them the perfectly grilled wagyu. Kore gave the man a small smile of thanks and began to shove the meat into her mouth to make up for the awkward moment.
“Ehhhh well that’s no fun” he complained, slumping in his chair to eat his own dinner. Kore seemed to liven up as the meal progressed, no longer phased by the cost of what they were ingesting.

“I like to know the name of the cow I’m eating”
“Why do they tell you the names of the cows? That makes it so sad!” Kore frowned
“Hmmm, isnt it the opposite? This way you can thank the cow personally as you chow down. It’s poetic...or something…”
“Or something?! That doesn’t sound like a good reason!”
“Ehh whatever, this place always just gives the cows funny names. Look at this one. Arakawa? What kind of name is that for a cow?!”
“It’s a pretty name!”
“I should buy a cow” Floyd mused, clearly thinking of all the things he could name it.
“Boss you can’t buy a cow! Where would you put it!?”
“Kid I wasn’t serious. If I bought a cow I’d leave it on the farm. Maybe I should get one and name it Yoru”
“It can stay with you, you won’t eat it, right?” He laughed. Kore’s mouth fell open. A cow...a whole cow. In her apartment. Where would it fit?
“Boss! I can’t… a whole cow?! Where…” She muttered about the costs of keeping livestock and the hygiene involved to keep it healthy in the city. Floyd burst out laughing.
“...Boss I don’t think that’s as romantic as you think it might be?”
“Huh? Why not?...Oh. Yea. You’re right. What do you suggest then, oh wise one?”
“Me?! Uhhh” Kore was shocked at his sudden question. “What about.. Uhhh… “ She stammered. She had no idea what the older woman would like, they’d rarely talked. “Oh! I know!” She shouted triumphantly.
“Oh?” Floyd asked, devouring the meat that had been placed in front of him.
“You could make her coffee right! The first time!” He paused, putting down his chopsticks.
“....If I did that she’d leave the shop a lot faster and I’d get to talk to her less”
“But maybe if you did it right she wouldn’t get so annoyed and might go out with you! How are you so hopeless at this, boss? I thought you’ve had lots of girlfriends!” She questioned innocently. He couldn’t help but laugh.
“I don’t date” he muttered. Kore frowned.
“So...what are you doing with Yoru then?” She asked, the chef leaned in with a laugh.
“Suffering, girlie. He’s suffering”
“Shut it, you”
Kore and the chef had a good laugh together as they poked fun at Floyd and his wild schemes to try and convince Yoru to date him. None of them seemed to include trying to court her in a mature way, and when Kore pointed it out he pouted the entire way back to her apartment as he drove her home.

“I’ve always wanted to try yakiniku if that’s not too expensive!” She mumbled, twiddling her thumbs. BBQ had been out of her budget, but she’d been saving to try out an all-you-can-eat menu.
“Wait… you’ve never had BBQ before? Oh my poor poor part-timer, how do you survive?” Floyd laughed, unlocking the car. Kore wasn’t sure if he was being literal or not so she said nothing and settled herself into the passenger seat.
“Are you sure it’s okay though? I don’t have enough money on me to pay for bbq…” she asked quietly as Floyd steered them through the city.
“Hah? I’m not going to invite you to eat with me and then make you pay for it” He said flatly as he pulled into the valet stand, handing the staff his keys.
“Uhhhhhhhh Boss…” Kore muttered, looking through the glittering entrance into the restaurant. “I thought we were going for all you can eat….” She could see the waiters roving around the room inside, dressed in gold and black, platters of meat held in their hands. She’d expected a dingy smoky room full of businessmen, not this. She was so under dressed!
“We are. If i’m going to eat bbq until I explode, it’s going to be A5” he sighed with a flourish.
“Boss… this is too much. This is way too expensive…” Kore stammered, hesitating on the doorstep.
“I said it’s fine, besides…”

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?” Floyd asked suddenly, his voice muffled by the food stuffed into his mouth.
“Hmmmm” Kore thought for a moment, toying with her last remaining takoyaki. “I’ve had some raw horse meat before! And larvae dipped in honey too!” She beamed at him as he stared back at her, horrified.
“Kid, how poor are you that you’re eating bugs? Do you need a raise?”
She laughed, rocking back and forth where she sat.
“No! Its okay, it was just offered at a restaurant I went to once and wanted to try it!”
“You CHOSE to eat bugs?” Floyd asked her, shaking his head.
“Mhmmm!”
“I bring you to the finest takoyaki establishment in Tokyo, and you tell me you eat bugs. Bugs! Oh Kid, what am I gonna do with you?” Floyd sighed, eyeing the food she had yet to eat.
“This is good too though!” Kore protested, pointing to her dinner.
“Nope. Come on, I’m taking you home. Bug eaters have no say in what’s good.” He grinned and pointed his nose up at her while picking the two remaining takoyaki out of her dish and shoving them into his mouth. “Mno mohr ochtopush fohr you” He declared through his full mouth as he ushered her back towards the car where it remained untouched, just like he said it would be.

“I would have thought the best takoyaki in the city would be somewhere...err…. Nicer…” She stepped around a puddle, not wanting to further examine if it was water or something much worse.
“Ahahahaha~ Why would the best takoyaki be from a stuck up 5 star chef that probably only makes a few dozen a day?” Floyd waved for her to follow him and pointed towards a small stall tucked into an even narrower alleyway.
“Floyd! It’s been so long I thought you’d died!” the chef yelled out to him when he caught sight of him.
“I thought you knew I couldn’t die!” Floyd hollered back, clapping the man on the back when they were close enough to reach each other. Kore watched the exchange awkwardly, her boss seemed to know the strangest group of people. The old chef turned his eyes to Kore and frowned.
“Now Floyd, that one is…”
Floyd waved away his words with a sigh.
“She’s my employee, not my date. Don’t worry. I’ve got my sights set somewhere else” He grinned
“Oho? The ever promiscuous Floyd Leech looking to settle down? That’s surprising!”
“I wouldn’t say that-”
“Boss, don't lie! You’ve been asking Yoru out for months now! Ehehe” Kore giggled as Floyd pointedly looked away, chagrined.
“Well little lady, your takoyaki is on the house if you spill the details about this guys’ love life. He’s always been so-” Floyd glared at him to shut him up.
“Not another word, old man” He hissed. The older man smiled and held up his hands in surrender.
“No mean to offend, sir. Takoyaki is on the house for both of you, have a good night!” He handed them each a boat of the fried octopus balls and waved them away.
They wandered around the alleyways eating their dinner off the tiny toothpicks that had come with the meal, Kore trying to pry into Floyd’s love life as he ignored her questions.
“What about you, Kid? I see how red you turn every time Kalim comes in for a coffee.” He asked her as they watched the fish in the river bite at the trash on the water's surface.
“Hey Mister! This is about you and Yoru! Not me! I don’t wanna talk about me!” Kore stammered
“Then maybe we call it even? I don’t wanna talk about Yoru much right now anyway” He muttered, leaning on the railing separating them from the edge of the riverway.
“Huh? Are you actually upset?” Kore pried, a grin growing on her face.
“Nah. Annoyed. Come on Kid. I’m bringing you home, I need to go do something” He stood up straight and stretched his arms over his head, throwing his trash into the water below.
“Hey! You shouldn’t litter, the fish will eat it!”
“So let them. We all need to eat something” He shrugged, turning back towards the alleyway they’d come from, not bothering to look behind him to see if Kore was following.

“I told you it was good,” Floyd mumbed, stuffing his last takoyaki into his mouth. He eyed the food stand wondering if he could go for another dozen.
“I’m gonna bring my roommates down here to get some one day! It’s really good!” She smiled at him, offering her remaining pieces to him. He accepted, shoving both takoyaki into his mouth with no regard for manners or cleanliness. Mayo dripped down his chin, landing on the stair between his legs.
“You absolutely cannot come out here by yourself”
“I wouldn’t be by myself! I’d have my roommates with me!”
“Are they like you?”
“No! They’re boys!” she pouted, not liking this protective dad act. She already got that enough from her real dad, she didn’t need it from her boss too.
“Not what I meant. Are they also naive and think good things about the world?” Floyd glanced at her from the corner of his eye, keeping his attention focused on the people shuffling in and out of the alley around them.
“Well yes! They’re -”
“Then you can’t come here alone with them. This place IS scary, and can be real dangerous. You can come here with me, Kalim, probably Yoru if you felt so inclined, but not with anyone else as sweet as you are”
“Why not!?” Kore protested.
“Cause you’ll get killed, kid. No jokes. Come on, I’ll take you home.” He stood up from the stair and led them back to where they’d parked. She noticed people looked at them and seemed to fade away into the shadows, she didn’t think they’d do the same if she were alone. Floyd was right, she wasn’t safe here on her own.

“Uhhh Boss...Are you sure it’s safe to be here? This place seems kinda scary…” Kore muttered, trying not to make eye contact with anyone else on the street.
“Ehhh? This place is fine, I think” He said, nodding to the men sitting in the gutters as they passed them. “I guess if I were you I’d be scared too, you’d probably be really easy to rob.” He joked casually as Kore checked her pockets to make sure her coin purse was still tucked away.
“Do you really think I’d get robbed?” She asked, the pitch of her voice rising exponentially
“Definitely yes. Don’t worry though, you’re with me- no one will bother us.” He tried to reassure her with a smile as she panicked.
“B-but what if someone tries to rob us! I don’t have that much money!”
Floyd barked out a laugh, it was adorable that she had no idea who he was, or what the symbol they’d parked under meant.
“Trust me, no one is going to bother us. Now let's get that takoyaki. I’m starving”.
Kore didn’t seem reassured by his words, but followed him nonetheless. The food stall was tucked in an even smaller dingier alley than the one they’d parked in, it’s grizzled old cook greeting Floyd with a smile.
“Floyd my boy! It’s been too long! Who’s the cutie?” The man smiled, showing off several missing teeth.
“This is my new employee! She suggested Takoyaki for dinner and who am I to turn down the advances of such a cute girl?” He grinned at her as she flushed.
“HELLO SIR!” She shouted “I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT HE INVITED ME BUT I JUST SUGGESTED TAKOYAKI, IT’S NOT A DATE!” The man laughed loudly at her spirited denial.
“I was just kidding, dear. I know you’re much too young for Floyd. Much too naive as well…”
“Now now, you shouldn’t tease her” Floyd laughed, patting her on the head again “She’ll get all worked up and turn as red as a tomato”
“No I won’t!” Kore protested, color rising in her face.
The chef laughed and handed them each a cardboard boat filled with perfectly browned takoyaki, mayo, bbq sauce, seaweed flakes, and bonito flakes and in delicious contrast.
“Floyd you should come by more often, we miss you down here” He said with his toothy grin as Floyd waved in a non-committal goodbye. He searched for a place to sit and settled himself on a concrete step in a doorway, Kore hesitating in front of him.
“It’s not gonna bite, you know” Floyd patted the concrete next to him and Kore sat down, hoping that the dirt wouldn’t stain her pants. They ate in silence for a few moments, looking out into the alley in front of them.

“You said you like Takoyaki right? How about that?” She suggested
“I knew I hired you for a reason, Kid. Takoyaki it is.” Floyd patted her on the head and led her towards the black BMW he’d parked behind the shop. Her eyes grew wide as he piloted them into the seedier area of town, the shops growing more run down and closer together the longer they drove.
Floyd parked under a small spray painted leech on the side of a brick building in an alleyway. Kore didn’t even want to get out of the car. There were people milling about with hoods pulled down over their eyes, slouching into their coats to cover their faces.
“Come on, best Takoyaki in the city is right around the corner” Floyd urged as he got out of the car. He didn’t seem to be bothered by the cracked pavement, the overflowing garbage bins and the people in tattered clothes reaching out needy hands to every passer by.

“Order what’s good, maybe if it’s good enough I can convince Yoru to go on a date here with me” Floyd chuckled looking through the drink menu.
“Huh? What do you mean?” Kore asked, waving down the staff to take their order. “Haven’t you two already gone on dates?” She asked after the staff member had bustled away.
“Nooooooope~” He sighed, resting his head in his hands. “We’ve gone for drinks before but she always takes off before it gets good. And she said she doesn’t want to go on a date yet”
“And… you think somehow fried chicken would convince her?” She giggled, her boss was kind of a funny guy.
“Doesn’t hurt to try, does it? Plus, she told me this stuff was her favourite so maybe if I find a hidden gem she won’t be able to say no.”
“Good luck, Boss!” Kore beamed at him. “You can get her with this chicken, I promise!” She cheered, her fists balled in excitement for his potential love life.
“I hope so. If this chicken sucks, you’re fired” He laughed, watching Kore openly panic before she realized he was joking.
“You’re so mean, Boss!”
“Nah, you’re just too easy to fool, kiddo.”
When the food arrived, Kore dished the best parts to Floyd first watching him like a hawk to see if he enjoyed it. She thought he was joking when he said he’d fire her, but she wasn’t ever really sure with him. He was really hard to understand sometimes. A grin spread across his face as he ate, the knot in Kore’s stomach unraveling allowing her to enjoy her own dinner.
When they were stuffed full of chicken they stumbled back to his car, unsteady on their chicken filled feet.
“Well I gotta hand it to you kid. That was some good fucking chicken.” Floyd groaned, rubbing his stomach. “Do you have anywhere else to be tonight or are you just headed home?”
“I was just going home, you can drop me at the train station!” Kore chirped, gently cradling the bag of takeout they’d gotten to her chest.
“Don’t be stupid. Put your address in the GPS I’ll drop you at your door. You don’t know what kind of chicken bandits might be around” He grinned at her
“There’s chicken bandits!?” She said, shocked, quickly looking between him and the chicken she held so tenderly in her hands. He laughed nearly the entire drive to her apartment.

“Order whatever, I don’t really care for fried chicken but Yoru really likes it so I should probably get used to it” He shrugged leaning back in his seat as Kore pored over the menu.
She waved over the staff and ordered much more than either of them could hope to eat, she hoped he didn’t mind that she wanted to take some home for her roommates.
“Do you two go out a lot? I thought she said she wasn’t going to date you?” Kore asked curiously, watching Floyd deflate at her words in front of her.
“Don’t rub it in. We’ve gone out a few times, but never to eat and she always tells me it’s not a date.”
“But wouldn’t going out at all count as a date?”
“Is this a date?” He grinned, knowing how easy it was to fluster her.
“No! Nono! That’s… That’s not what I meant!” She stammered, her heart beating out of her chest as she felt her face flush. She thought about Kalim and the time that they’d spent together, wondering if what they’d been doing counted as dates…
“Aha~ I was just kidding, Kid. You’re definitely not my type”
“Hehehe I’m not tattooed enough right?” She grinned, trying her best to tease Floyd about his crush on Yoru.
“No. You’re way too short. You’re puny, kid. I can barely see you over the counter at the shop. I should get you a stepping stool so the customers don’t think I hired a child” He laughed.
They ate their way through their pile of food as it arrived, Kore continually trying to turn the conversation back on Floyd to fluster him for once. It never worked. He was right, she was too easy to ruffle. When he dropped her off in front of her apartment she swore that she’d one day turn the tables on him, wondering if Ace or Deuce could help her work on her banter. She’d practice in secret so he never saw it coming. She’d get the best of him, one day.

“Do you know anywhere good? It’s not really my go to” Floyd asked, scratching the back of his head. “put it in the GPS”.
“Mhmmm! My roommate and I went to a place when I first came to town! It was so good… I don’t know the address though… let me look it up!”
Floyd leaned over the steering wheel watching Kore as she punched in the numbers of her chosen restaurant, her tongue poking out of her mouth slightly. He chuckled to himself, amused by the interesting character fate had brought him the day she walked into his shop and he offered her a job.
Floyd circled the restaurant muttering about the lack of places to park his BMW, and was in a sour mood by the time they reached the hostess stand. She stared at him, eyes wide and biting her lip.
“You’re the green-”
He shook his head almost imperceptibly, the hostess swallowing her words.
“Follow me to your table” She showed them to a table tucked into the back near the kitchens. No one would be able to see them from the doorway. The odd pair made themselves comfortable, Kore grabbing the menu to point out her favourites.

An Impromptu Dinner Date
Story summary: Floyd asks Kore if she wants to grab dinner, he's bored and hungry.
AU summary: Mafia, coffee shop, tattoo shop, college, etc etc. All of the best AUs mashed into one AU dubbed the Coffia AU. Previously known as Voltron AU because they've all formed together to create one powerful AU, but I'm sick of explaining that it has nothing to do with actual Voltron.
Reblogs greatly appreciated, since with all the links this won't show in tags.
Character Summary:
Floyd Leech, 26, Ex- hit man with the Leech mafia, was injured on the job and bought a coffee shop while in recovery to pass the time. Found out he really enjoys making coffee. Now the shop is a front for money laundering, and a good ass cup of coffee.
Kore Hightower, 20, College Student. Accidentally found herself working for the strange tall guy in the coffee shop she asked for directions in when she got lost shortly after moving in. Doesn't know about the mafia connections of her boss. OC of @/girl-in-the-tower
Yoru Crowley (mentioned), 26, tattoo artist and general secretive person. Refuses to go on an official date with Floyd even though he's been asking for months. She has reasons.
Kalim Al Asim (mentioned), 22, heir to the Asim family conglomerate, insanely wealthy. Is a shrewd businessman, but still has a kind heart outside of business, has known Floyd for years despite their families being on shaky terms at best.
“Hey Kid, you hungry?” Floyd whined, stretching his arms over the counter with a groan. Kore frowned at her boss, slumped over the area she had been trying to wipe clean.
“Uhhhhmm, I’m fine, thank you” She stammered quietly, gently cleaning the area around his body. Floyd was a strange man and was always asking her odd questions so she wasn’t sure if he was asking because he wanted to eat or if he was just wanting to make conversation.
“Geeeehhhhh I’m bored and I wanna eat but don’t want to go alone. Come with me” He grinned at her from his place on the counter waiting for her to give in to his whining.
“I’m not hungry, you should go! I’ll stay and watch the shop!” She beamed at him, her stomach growled loudly, betraying her.
“Ha! That settles it. We’re going. Come on!” He jumped up excitedly from the counter, throwing his apron towards the pegs on the wall where they were normally stored after hours. It missed by several inches. He laughed and shrugged, digging the keys from the shop out of his pants pocket as the bell over the door rang with the first customer in half an hour. Kore looked towards the door as she hung up her and Floyds' aprons.
“We’re closed” Floyd grumbled at the customer
“It’s not even 5pm? How are you closed?” the woman snapped back, crossing her arms.
“Heh?! Sign says we’re open noon to whenever. It’s whenever. Piss off.” He herded her towards the door, waiting for Kore to catch up to them. The woman left grumbling about poor business practices as Floyd locked the door behind them all.
“What do you figure?”
“Huh?” Kore asked, confused as they strolled towards his car.
“What do you want to eat?”
