Sooo i had to ask since km twt is freaking out: what does it mean when jungkook called jimin 'dangshin' during the last vlive? i saw a lot karmys mentioning it but i trust your opinion best
당신 (dangshin) is a tricky word to translate into English. Although it’s directly translated as “you” the full context of the Korean word is much more loaded than its simple English equivalent.
In fact, as a side note to people learning the Korean language (and to fans in general), please be extra careful with using “dangshin" in real life. I would even strongly advise you not to use it until you have some proficiency of the language because it is a difficult word to master.
That being said, “dangshin” in its purest form is a polite/elevated “you”.
Here are some general examples to use “dangshin”:
Tumblr media
Who are you?, what is your name?, etc.
Now, the reason why you may not use “dangshin” a lot in everyday life, and the reason why when you’re learning Korean “dangshin” is omitted  (e.g., you are more likely to learn “성함이 어떻게 되십니까?” or “이름이 뭐예요?” when learning to ask for people’s name) is because “you” can be quite intimate and/or rude. This applies to both informal 너 (neo) and formal “당신”. Therefore, “dangshin” is often dropped in colloquial speech.
How you use it and the context matters.
Which brings us to why KM fans are excited. “Dangshin” as you probably heard by now (from k-dramas or wherever) can also be used between lovers - particularly married or older couples.” It’s sort of the equivalent of dear/darling/you all in one:
Tumblr media
I’ll work hard to become a good husband for you., etc.
So basically, Korean KM fans are teasing KM saying that “dangshin” and “yeobo” are a set (married/older couples usually call each other yeobo/dangshin).
tl;dr
Dangshin is a formal way of saying “you.”
There is no direct English equivalent and it is a very difficult word to master for people who are learning Korean.
Context matters!
Yes, it can be used as the general “you” but it isn’t used that much colloquially (in everyday conversations).
No, don’t randomly call Koreans “dangshin” - when used in the wrong tone or context, it can come off as extremely rude.
No, friends don’t call each other “dangshin”. It’s awkward and too stiff to be used in a casual conversation between friends.
Yes, some married couples call each other “dangshin.” When there is a couple, Koreans may describe them as as having a “yeobo-dangshin” relationship.
KM are bangin’

달토끼 (daltokki) the rabbit in the moon
Tumblr media
For anyone who wants to know, the rabbit in the moon is from Asian folklore. It’s popular in China, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar.
The story goes that a rabbit, a jackal, an otter and a monkey decide to show charity on the day of the full moon. When an old man begged for food, the Jackal pilfered and the monkey gathered food to give him and the otter caught fish. But, the rabbit (who only knew how to gather grass offered himself and threw his body into the fire.
The man revealed himself to be Sakra (ruler of heaven in Buddhist and Hindu Cosmology) and touched by the rabbit’s actions, the rabbit was unscathed and instead had his image permanently etched into the moon.
Tumblr media
There is a Korean festival in autumn called Chuseok (추석) (Autumn Eve)which celebrates him.
In the Korean version the rabbit pounds the ingredients for rice cake.
