My favorite structure from the South of France and/or Spain was La Sagrada Famillia. The church was beautiful both inside and out and served as a central point of the city of Barcelona. I liked that the architect Gaudi, didn't just design this building but also created designs for many structures in Barcelona making the city cohesive. My favorite city would have to be Nice or Madrid. The beaches of Nice and all the colors of the buildings drew me in and made me want to return in the summer months. Madrid I liked also because of the atmosphere. I was doing alot of people watching and at one point I saw a couple dancing to some street music playing. This sense of community was not as present in other cities but strived in Madrid. One of my personal goals was to learn the language and use it. In Nice, I was able to speak a little bit of French to the waiter. I wasn't able to hold a conversation but I could understand a few things and respond to a few things as well. For example, I was able to tell him hoe many people were in our party in French. I also wanted to try new foods. In the South of France when we had beef stew with the polenta loaf, I had never had something like that before. I tried it and it was pretty good, Also in Spain I tried Paella which I had never even heard of before and it ended up being one of my favorite meals from the trip

The Madrid Rio Park megaproject included many aspects and details that made it what it was today. It started off as a huge beltway but they quickly realized that this use was not benefical and decided to turn it into a park. The hired architechts to design bridges meant for bike and pedestrian crossing so that they are able to get into the park. The added trees, bushes, plants, and grass so it can be green and welcoming. They added many playground areas so people have a purpose to go there. A beach and beach bar were also installed for the same reasons as well as many outdoor fitness/sports courts so people can use the area as a gathering spot. The $15 billion dollar project is definitely a beneficial public investment since the park is a major area of gathering and leisure. It also makes the city of Madrid more welcoming and more needed to see

Gaudi had a huge impact on the city of Barcelona and on the structures located there. One structure that serves as the heart of the city is La Sagrada Familla. This structure influences the emotion of every person that views it from the inside and the outside. On the outside- the double facade creates an experience in which you can choose. One side is more whimsical and dream like while the other side is more detailed and ornate. The use of greens and plants creates a calming emotion for the viewers. The lack of color on the outside is made up by the stained glass on the inside. Anyone in the inside of the structure can see how beautifully designed it is. Gaudi’s other structure, Park Guell also brings similar positive emotions. On the top of the park there is a view that encapsulates the entire city of barcelona. This place creates a space for people to relax and take in the city. The whole park promotes tranquility and relaxation. The greenery and scenery pulls positive emotions on all visiting guests.

Dali’s surrealist approach is seen in many different ways in the interior of the building. One that stuck out to me the most was the use of an entire room to look like a person.
This space enhances the artwork because when you first walk in you don’t see much. Just random sculptures all over the room. Once you are standing in the ideal perspective- the entire room comes together to make the face of a person. Which now makes the artwork that much more impressive that Dali was able to take on this project.
Another example of how the interior of the museum enhances his art- is all of the dark and red rooms located throughout. It turns the focus right to the intended item rather than browsing. It makes it more clear what Dali wants you to view. Multiple rooms in the building were covered with red- which made the room seem much more important and interesting than the other areas where art was located. Dali could’ve put this in an area with other items- but chose to isolate it so it can be truly seen for its beauty and significance

The most meaningful part of Foundation Maeght was the incredible view from the terrace on top of the building. This was memorable to me for obvious reasons- but this allowed me to understand why this museum and gathering place was designed in this area. The area was very calming and brought positive emotions due to the nature that the museum was surrounded in. Artists who chose to gather here had the opportunity to be away from the city of nice and instead surrounded by creative opportunities from nature. The calming presence brings ease and comfort for all who visit. The view and the art inside all gives brings the same emotions. Peaceful and calming is present throughout the entire area.

The sustainable architecture in the Nice Meridia district was very interesting. The panels on the educational building particularly stuck out to me. The way they built it allowed for the building to block sunlight in the summer months to avoid too much heat, and absorb the sun in the winter months into the building. The glass on the building also was a sustainable design choice. Having large glass panels making up the structure allows for natural light to come in the building. This reduces the need to electricity and also benefits the consumer of the building so that they have access to nature which betters mood. The gardens on the outside of the buildings in this district also portray sustainability. The way it acts as a flood catcher allows the main buildings to still be useful during floods or major rain. It also serves as a way for the people who use the building to participate in nature

I had so much fun in Italy! My favorite structure was the Milan Duomo. This structure stood out to me more than all of them because of the ornate, elaborate and gothic designs. The building was mesmerizing on both the inside and outside. The duomo was also a focal point of the city in which it seems that the city was built around the structure.
My favorite city was Rome. I enjoyed the history that was associated with the city and with the structures located in the city. I also had some of my favorite meals of the trip in Rome including a delicious panini and pasta from our group dinner. I also loved St. Peter’s basilica. The inside was so beautiful and was an amazing experience to see.
My trip goals included learning a new language, trying new foods, and using glossary terms. I tried my best to use italian greetings when I would approach people such as saying “ciao” or “grazie” but I didn’t specifically learn new words. I didn’t try many new foods if I’m being honest- but I went out of my comfort zone as to getting the same thing everyday. I also have found myself recognizing terms from our glossary when I see them and knowing what people are talking about when they use the vocabulary term. I hope to become more confident to use the terms myself in the upcoming countries.

One main lesson I learned was about sustainability. In the vertical garden apartment building- they do everything in their power to create a sustainable environment. For instance- the trees protect the building from damage, use irrigation systems so they are not over watered, and allow the building to use less materials in all. Another lesson I took away from today’s walk was the importance of the shapes and designs of buildings. All the shapes served as a specific purpose as well as served as an aesthetic looking purpose. For example, one building was had a big chimney that could allow less smoke and pollution in the city. Finally I learned how cities can shift the presence of their residents. Originally everyone lived in the city center of milan, but overtime as it became more popular crowded- this had to be shifted. By building work places and living spaces, Milan is able to be expanded and accommodate more people.

These 2 buildings to me where the most symmetrical buildings I saw that fits into Albertis harmony in proportions idea. The one on the right has the same square box that Albertis building had. It can be split across the main line and have perfect up and down proportions as well. The circle at the top of the building has a 3:1 ration just like the Santa Maria Novella’s main window. The image on the left is proportional down the middle as well- the door is not completely centered so it throws the proportions off but the windows have 1:1 proportions with each other

A lot that I have researched has been about driving and cars. In Florence- there was less driving around and cars parked everywhere. As well as the drivers were more willing to let us pass by. In Rome- people were driving everywhere and not attempting to let us walk across the streets. Another difference was that the history between the two cities was the type of architecture. Rome is filled with history while Florence is newer and more famous for the renaissance architecture. Florence is also more condensed and easily walked throughout. Places are all pretty close by and close to the city center- while Rome didn’t have one city center, the city is more built around its major landmarks

Pick 2 structures and compare/contrast how it effects the piazzas
The structures of the Piazza Navona and The Trevi Fountain I found had many similarities. For obvious reasons- both structures include a fountain and are both baroque styles. The detailed nature of the buildings bring many people towards them to view the beauty. The fountains and the locations of the structure both serve as meeting points for roman’s. Streets connect to these structures in order to lead people from all directions to the specific structure
For differences, the two structures serve as incredibly different purposes to the piazzas and the roman’s. The Piazza Navona has a church near there so it brings people together for religious reasons while the Trevi fountain brought people for reasons to drink water and view the area

3 differences I noticed between cultures/built landscape
One thing I noticed was that there were designated smoking rooms inside the airport before we even exited the airport and right outside the gate. smoking in italy seems a lot more common then the people who smoke in america and it seems much more excepted
Another thing I noticed was the way the cities were lined up. While on the plane I noticed lots of farm land and empty lots then a large city then no towns for a while then a large city again. This is different from american since we have multiple suburbs, main cities and smaller cities. This allows italy to have a higher walking presence while traveling in a city. Since the city is in a confined space, walking from place to place is more accessible. In america this isn’t the case and cars are necessary to travel from place to place.
A final cultural difference that i observed was the language. While walking on the streets many italians were speaking in the native language which is expected- but in most shops or places we would enter, we were greeted in english and served in english. In america this isn’t as common. Most people in italy seem to know both italian and at least some english to get them by. Most americans only know english and can only communicate in english. Forcing tourists to adapt to our language instead of us adapting to them.

My favorite structure on campus is the Innovation Quad. This building is a brand new structure on campus and its modern essence is encapsulating. The building has two facades and points of entry. One is on the front and one is on the side, although both entry points can be seen as the main facade of the building. The paths in front of the building create walkways to this place and bring people together right in front of the building where there are swings and chairs to relax in either by yourself or with friends. The urban design of this building works to bring people together as they’re walking through campus. The building itself is made up of many architectural features. There is an arch leading you into the building and there are columns leading you into the other entrance of the building. These entrances serve as a welcoming atmosphere when you enter the building. Triangulation, post and lintels and trusses all help hold the structure of the building. Once inside you can look at the ceiling and see the triangulation and trusses in place. Overall this building is super cool and plays off the the built environment that Elon sits on top of.

Blog Post #1 My Goals
For this Winter in Europe I have many goals for the trip! My first goal is to try new foods. I have always been a picky eater, but I want to try to put myself outside of my comfort zone and fully dive into the experience and the culture of different cities/countries. Another goal that I have is to learn new languages. I took French in middle school, but I have never been able to use it so I don't remember much of what I learned. I hope that while we're in Europe I can expand my French and maybe learn some Spanish and Italian as well. Another goal that I have is to try and use language from the glossary. Memorizing all the language is hard but I hope that I am able to at least look at a structure and recognize a couple aspects of it and being able to match the structure to the name of the feature. Another goal of mine is to explore new cultures. I have never been out of the country before so I have never been fully emerged in different cultures. I am incredibly interested in spanish culture, italian culture, and french culture and I hope that I am able to go to different events or get togethers that will allow me to meet new people and explore their culture. Another goal I have is to build independence. Having to budget my money while im abroad and buy my own grocieries and lunch and snack will be a challenge to help be prepare for being on my own one day.
