Chloe Frazer has always been a woman of color

In light of certain comments around the Internet on the new Lost Legacy trailer, here’s a sourced reminder.

The Art of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, page 22:

Relevant quotes, bolding mine:

She’s meant to be sort of dark and mysterious, so we wanted her to be somewhat exotic-looking, of mixed ethnicity.

(…) We tried out a number of ethnicities, styles, hair styles, costumes, and cultures trying to define the character.

More about trying different ethnicities from the same book, page 25:

We tried out a number of ethnic variations including Indonesian, European/French, African and Indian.

And more ethnic tryouts from The Art of the Uncharted Trilogy, page 68:

We tried several looks and ethnicities before casting Claudia Black.

The above quotes indicate that Naughty Dog has, in the past, viewed Chloe’s race as an aesthetic thing to made her more ~exotic~ (which is certainly its own problem, but not something brought up in the comments). The specification of her race in The Lost Legacy as Indian and the incorporation of this into the storyline and her backstory show that they’re now recognizing it as part of her character. But it has always been there.

Or to look at it another way, Chloe Frazer has never been only white.
