You know I think there's been a lot of positive discussion and attention brought to the racism that exists in this fandom, but there has been a huge lack of conversation revolving around how to actually support POC, how to connect with us and how to actually be inclusive of POC.
Because at the end of the day, many of us know that racism exists. We face it every day even if you can't see it. For us, it's often times unsurprising when stereotypes and negative connotations attached to characters who are POC are revealed or surfaced. It rarely adds anything new to our usual interactions. And that's in itself is a problem and conversation for another time.
What I want to say now is that the best thing any of us can do for POC in this fandom is to support them. Engage with content that includes POC in a positive way, ask the POC who are here their two cents on issues involving race, and include POC in your own content without always making them the bad guy. And hey! If they are the bad guy, consult with a POC to ensure you're not perpetuating stereotypes. It's okay to have a POC in opposition to the MC of your story, but give them a reason, give them depth, give them actual character.
And consider making your OCs POC! Even if you aren't one. There are plenty of resources and people out there that can assist you with ensuring you acknowledge their cultural backgrounds and ethnicity. For example, someone else made a post about how Bobby's Jamaican heritage is rarely acknowledged in fics even tho he's the most popular LI. Be the person who acknowledges his background, that demonstrates it, who shows it in the music he knows or the food he cooks or the way he dances. C'mon now! You could even include an interaction where he greets someone with "Wah Gwaan". And maybe stop making the only acknowledgment of his heritage the fetishizing of his dick size?
And when you write a POC, it doesn't have to be perfect! It's okay to make mistakes. Get comfortable with bettering yourself if you actually care about making this fandom a better place for POC. Give us some representation. I know so many of us who get tired of the lack of content with characters who look like us. For me personally, that's the whole reason why I even write in the first place.
Have couples where both partners are POCs. Don't always make the black girl in your story the BFF or the villain. Go against the stereotypes Fusebox is guilty of perpetuating. And look deeper into the characters who POC instead of just labeling them and dismissing how they could possibly feel as a human being.
And engage with content released that shows POC. About a year ago (possibly longer) I did an entire series where I created an MC who was a WOC for all my favorite S2 LIs. And guess what? The darker the skin of the face claim I selected, the least amount of engagement the post received. And if you ask me, that's demonstration enough. Because this fandom is telling me as a black creator what you support and what you don't.
And don't think that the POC in this fandom don't notice when white OCs and MCs get more attention than ours. And I'm not saying that in seeking attention now, but my friends and my mutuals, they see it and feel it and experience it too. And it hurts us. We lose our motivation to produce content, we feel left out, and oftentimes, we end up becoming silent because we feel like we can't even compete, simply because our of race.
That's why people leave.
It's not always just the obvious racist comments and stereotypes and finger-pointing and dehumanizing of characters that drive POC away. It can also be the small interactions you choose NOT to engage in too. It's the lack of support that POC feel while they're here.
And when racism is a hot topic within this fandom, it's easy to say to a POC "I support you" but what's going to happen when this conversation dies down? Are you going to continue to engage with them? Are you going to keep speaking to them? Are you going to release content you know they'll appreciate? Are you going to consult them when you want to create an OC who's a POC? What are you going to do when you have to go beyond just saying "I support you"?
And that's all I wanted to say. I'm not blaming anyone, I'm not trying to stir a pot. I'm just asking us as a collective fandom to be better, to be more inclusive. Even I can be better.
And I'm not on Reddit for a reason. But I just felt the need to say something here because I know of black people in this fandom who have left because they couldn't find hardly ANY content that genuinely represented them. And what they did find was the racist comments geared towards the black characters or a lack of dimension written into their characters that nearly erased their blackness. Or even the obvious fetishization towards the LIs who are POC. And obviously, this what I choose to speak about as a black woman. But I'm done for now.
I can rant on about this, but I've spoken my piece and will continue on.

bless you for making this post 🫶🏽🫶🏽
don’t even get me started on the thabi hate, i didn’t play s4 BUT coming in the litg tag to see ppl literally drag her up & down every other day was so insane that i literally made a post asking what was up w/ the thabi hate????? & i even looked around on fusebox’s other social medias to see what the reasoning was & alotta of it was that the players had issues w/ WILL. not HER. just WILL. LIKE????????
The Misogynoir of the LITG Fandom
This has been in my heart for a long while and I did mentioned and alluded to this, I'm going to fully talk about this now. Whether anyone likes it or not because honestly, it's been bothering me for months.
The LITG fandom has a racism problem, not just racism but racism to black characters, particularly to black women characters.
I remember when I was still on Reddit, some controversy happened when people realised that Lucas was attracted to Hope. The hate was tremendous! I remember being so confused and annoyed because why is it such a problem that Lucas is attracted to Hope? Hope was a beautiful (black) woman so why not? And she looked like me so Lucas being (canonically) attracted to her made me feel seen.
And I stayed active on Reddit for a month and every day - every. Single. Day. - there was hate posts about Hope, these people going on about how much they hated Hope and I was hurt.
When S4 came and people were going off about Thabi being snakey, I was baffled. When I played S4 for a minute, Thabi never gave me snakey vibes, neither did Najuma but Lexi, the white woman, sure did gave me snakey vibes! The hate towards Thabi was so bad that it honestly turned me off of S4.
And the hate is so hypocritical because these people will hate on Erikah, Hope, Genevieve, Thabi and Najuma but will love Jen, Cherry, Allegra, Marisol, Lottie, Chelsea and Lexi! These people literally praise Cherry and Lottie - these white women - for doing the most heinous things and both of them using their white woman tears to get away with their horrible actions! It's infuriating!
Like @crimswnred pointed out, these people love Angie, another non-black WOC, because she does what they want. She doesn't compete with MC for any guys; she just simply stands aside and let's MC get what she wants without a fight. Not to mention, Angie isn't black.
The racism is the reason why I sort of left Reddit and joined Tumblr because I felt so uncomfortable and hurt by the racism.
Until we as fandom acknowledge this problem, it will continue to happen and nothing will be done about it.
#I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE#so so so fucking glad other ppl have noticed this pattern cuz it’s genuinely baffling

also one day we need to have a discussion on WHY a certain part of the fandom decided to villanize bobby and make him out to be a "toxic walking red flag gaslighter" when the worst thing he ever did was make cupcakes for his sad friend lmao. and all while romancing characters that have straight up cheated on mc too like??? and btw people are allowed to dislike bobby (like I definitely get he can be annoying and immature and maybe he's not as attentive to mc as they would like) but the insane hate to the point where they straight up lie about him just so they can have a reason to make him out to be some terrible villain is very strange. and I can think of a couple of reasons why. (sorry for this rant btw but I made the mistake of going on r*ddit earlier and I just really needed to let this out)
no, anon, don't apologise!! i definitely agree with that!
YOU ARE RIGHT AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT!!!!!
for me it feels off. why everyone hates him all of the sudden and for reasons that aren't true AT ALL?
he gaslights mc? like, what the fuck...
and they can't decide it either. or they hate him because he's clingy or they hate him because he doesn't pay much attention to MC. like, pick a struggle.
he's allowed to make friends, he's allowed to treat his friends well. just 'cause he's baking something for a girl it doesn't mean he wants to fuck her! boys and girls are allowed to be friends.
and if they do fuck (which just happens in one specific scenario) it's late late game.
and all that hate just to praise white pale boys? WHAT? why do you feel the need to drag bobby to big up your favourite LI?
it doesn't sit right with me.
you should definitely check what Emma said in this post! i agree very much with every point brought into light.

Every time I see someone complain about Bobby’s route for being ‘boring’ or ‘lacking drama’, I can’t help but roll my eyes.
Honestly, like you who like and all that shebang, but really? Is that all you’ve got to say? You don’t like Bobby because his route lacks flavour? You need to have the other girls breathing down your neck every episode, lamenting to you their love for the guy you’re coupled up with and have always been coupled up with, to feel anything? You’ll look me in the eye and tell me Bobby’s route is inferior while cheating on Hope every step of the way? You’ll put up with Ibrahim dumping you for Shannon, then getting together with Jo right before your eyes and say that Bobby is lesser because he isn’t interested in any other girl in the Villa? You’re going to come to my man and say STEP UP after he legit stays LOYAL to you EVERY SINGLE PLAYTHROUGH?
Now Bobby may have amnesia, but he never forgets who his number one princess toe queen poppet lass is.
I’ve seen this rhetoric about a couple of times, so this rant isn’t at anyone in particular, and I understand that people have different reasons for not liking Bobby nor his route, but this isn’t about those reason, just this one. Unfathomable critique in my eyes. Sorry not sorry if you disagree.

LOVE ISLAND’S SPECIAL LINGO
Love Island Islanders have a very specific language while on Love Island. The words and phrases used by the Islanders have specific meanings within the context of the show.

CATCH FEELINGS. Refers to falling in love when you weren’t supposed to or starting to like who you are matched with too soon.
CHALLENGE. An official setup game the contestants play that almost never has any substantial consequences. Usually a challenge starts with them running to the little challenge area in slow motion.
CHAT/HAVE A CHAT. Speak with someone for a private, often more serious conversation. E.g. ‘I just wanted to go for a chat and see where your head’s at’.
CHEEKY. It means fun and brash and cute.
CHIRPSE. Means to flirt or chat someone up.
CHIVED. To be hacked off or peeved.
CONNECTION. A way of saying you like someone romantically in a deep and meaningful way
COULD BE HAPPIER. The type of happiness that’s not big enough to stop you from ending things with who you’re with in order to get with someone else.
COUPLE. The two-person team contestants are in. A couple shares a bed, competes in challenges as a unit, and can be up for elimination together. Love Island is won by a couple.

DROP ME OUT. Essex slang for “Oh My God!” - an expression of disbelief or shock.
EARLY DAYS. An expression used to assert that a romantic endeavor has only just begun.
EGGS IN ONE BASKET. The term refers to the act of going all-in on something, giving all of your time and attention to one person.
END OF THE DAY. An expression signaling that the declarative statement that follows will be a total summation of the matter at hand.
EXTRA. When you take something too far, and are over dramatic about something. E.G. ‘Why are you getting so extra about it?’
FANCY. To have a crush on someone.
FANNY FLUTTERS. A tingling sensation a woman gets when she is aroused. (When someone has turned you on.)
FACTOR 50. To graft way, way too hard.
FIT. Good-looking, in ways beyond physical fitness, ‘hot’.
FRIEND ISLAND. Specifically, what Love Island is not. This phrase is Love Island’s version of ‘not here to make friends’.
FUMING. Super angry or really pissed off.
GEEZER. A term of endearment used to refer to a male friend; can also be shortened as ‘geez’.
GET THE HUMP. To become annoyed, perhaps unreasonably so, about one’s current state of affairs.
GET TO KNOW. To admit that you fancy someone, but without actually having to say those words; in turn, saving yourself the embarrassment of a potential rejection.
GIRL CODE. Although girl code is not exclusive to Love Island, it is a term which is regularly used by female contestants. It is used to describe a special female pact/code that should not be broken even for an attractive man.
GRAFT/GRAFTING. It means that someone is going to put in the work to try to win another over and get them to like you. Grafting is an all-important step in the mating rituals of Love Island, without which one cannot survive.
GROWER. In the Love Island villa, a grower refers to someone who can slowly become more confident and outgoing as the series goes on. But it can also refer to a love interest who “grows” on you.
GUTTED. To be emotionally devastated; in Love Island parlance, those who are gutted traditionally add the adverb ‘absolutely’ to accentuate the extent to which they have been gutted.
HAVE A CUDDLE. To cuddle, usually with one islander as the big spoon and the other as the baby spoon. Since couples sleep in the same bed, islanders will wonder in the morning whether other islanders ‘had a cuddle’.
HEAD’S BEEN TURNED. All of your emotional connection and attention changes from the person that you may have fancied toward another person, usually a newer islander.
HIDEAWAY. The room where the contestants are sometimes allowed to go, almost always as a couple, for the purpose of getting away from everyone else. There are still cameras in there. People can do lots of bits.
ICK. That feeling of cringey discomfort or gut feeling you get around someone you used to fancy, but now you’re like, gaaaah, no.
IS WHAT IT IS. Expression of defeat when something, usually a relationship, does not go the way you’d want it to so it must be accepted even if it is undesirable. 'There’s nothing you can do about it’. “It is what it is” is basically English for c’est la vie.
I’VE GOT A TEXT! The common reaction to receiving a text message from the producers, shouted when done correctly, instructing them to do something. [Ping] I’ve Got a text!
LAY IT ON THICK. Try really hard to graft someone.
LOYAL. Describes someone who stays true to their Love Island partnership and friendships. Reassure others that their “head won’t turn” and that they’ll stay true to their partner.
MELT. A person who is soppy and so into someone else that it’s an embarrassing flaw.
MINGING. Unpleasant, foul, generally unwanted.
MINT. As in ‘mint condition’, a term used to describe a person, place, or things, superb superficial appearance.
MUGGY. Like you’re trying to play someone or dump them. Go behind their back, or act sneaky, disloyal.
MUG OFF. Dump someone. Someone who’s been dumped or made to look like a fool for being played. ‘Now I look like an absolute mug’. In the context of Love Island, one almost always does this by choosing a new mate with little regard for their former one. As an act, it is deeply frowned upon.
MY TYPE ON PAPER. A way of describing a person’s type. The kind of person you’re usually attracted to physically. But usually followed by a ‘but’…
OG. Used to simply mean that something or someone is 'original'—meaning, the first of its kind.
OH MY DAYS. An exclamation of shock. In a moment of exasperation, a much more fun, much more charming way to basically say ‘Oh my god’.
OI OI! A way for a large group of men to greet a another person they’ve never seen before.
PENG SORT. A very handsome young man.
PIED/PIED OFF. The act of being dumped or ditched. Reject someone.
PLAYING THE GAME. Is seen as slimy and low as it can get. Despite the cash prize and fame at stake, one of the best parts of the show is that the contestants rarely mention the potential windfall.
PRANGY. A term used for feeling anxious, paranoid or scared - particularly at the prospect of someone new entering the Love Island villa.
PRANGING OUT. To behave erratically.
PROPER. It’s often used to quantify the level of attractiveness, anger or horniness.
PUNCHING. A shortened version of ‘punching up,’ it is the act of dating out of one’s league.
RECOUPLE. One of the biggest causes of stress and constant topic of conversation revolves around ‘recoupling’. Recoupling is where the contestants find out if they will be picked by a fellow contestant or if they will be kicked off the show. The viewing public may be asked to vote on their favorite couples.
SALTY. To behave unfavourably towards someone. Used it in a sentence, ‘Why are you being so salty with me?’
SALMON. A way to jump into the pool where you shake your body like a fish.
SAUCE. Your personality, character, and what makes you, well, you or sex appeal.
SHOOT YOUR SHOT. Taking the opportunity to tell someone you like them, and put yourself out there.
SLAG. A disgraceful, derogatory term akin to slut. The Love Island villa is a place of acceptance, forward thinking, and sexual freedom, and thus, slag is one of the worst words one can utter while on the show.
SNAKE/SNAKEY. When someone’s being sneaky, deceitful, or sly behind your back Or right in your face. In the villa, someone is 'snakey’ if they make romantic advances towards a coupled up Islander.
SNOG. To make out, often with some heavy petting.
STICK IT ON HIM OR HER. To make a move on someone (graft), flirt.
VIBES. A certain feeling a person, or two persons, give out.
WHAT HE/SHE BRINGS TO THE VILLA. The ultimate sign of respect from other islanders. It means the other islanders actually like you and recognize that your personality adds something of value to their cohort. In recouplings and other voting scenarios among Islanders, if you ‘bring a lot to the Villa,’ your chances of staying in the Villa are higher.
WHERE’S YOUR HEAD AT? A way to find out how someone feels about you.
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? To ask if somebody understands what you are talking about. But most of the time, it’s used as a way to end a sentence.
