Okay WAIT so let me get this straight.

In Akt 24, Duck wakes up at her boyfriend’s Fakir’s house, and finds that he had tucked her into bed the night before because she was OUT. Parties at Drossy’s are no joke. 

She walks downstairs and Fakir is at the stove, watching his story burn. And what’s the FIRST thing he says when he sees her? 

“So, you’re awake. You’re hungry, right?”

OH MY GOD. She has a rough night, he makes sure she gets to bed, and then he wants to make sure she gets FED?

And then! And then! He makes her this BIG ASS BREAKFAST. 

(she’s fine she’s just choking here)

And oh ho ho, what do we have here on the table? Are those…

ROSES, Fakir?

You might already know that roses in a vase like that are used as a motif in this story. There’s some in Mytho and Fakir’s dorm room that reflect Mytho’s heart shards returning to him, as well as his descension toward becoming crow-ified. Maybe they have another meaning, or maybe I just think it would be cute if Fakir set out flowers for bae’s breakfast. 

Either way, I’m inclined to believe that those weren’t there before, but the screenshot before the table is set doesn’t reveal enough. Let’s investigate.

I’m so, SO glad that Fakir didn’t confess his feelings to Duck in the Lake of Despair.

One of my first questions after watching Princess Tutu for the first time was

“Does Fakir love Duck?”

For anyone who might be in the same position, the answer is yes. Maybe I’ll explain why I think he ends the story in love another time. All you need to know now is that he does.

The followup question after watching the series for the first time was

“Does Duck love Fakir?”

Hmm. This one is a little tricky. I believe that by the end of the story, she’s certainly heading down that path. I believe that what she feels toward Fakir are feelings of love, but she isn’t able to recognize them as such. To her, love feels like a schoolgirl crush. It’s exciting and nervous and giddy. It makes her want to giggle and blush and run around in circles.

Compared to the puppy love she felt for Mytho, her feelings for Fakir must seem alien. Duck isn’t able to give it a name, but she is able to identify it. Feeling weak, but someone makes you feel strong? Trusting someone to stay and fight by your side, without being able to see that they’re there? Letting someone see you cry? I mentioned this earlier, but Duck doesn’t really do that. How could I have forgotten that at the end of her rope, she finally exposed her heart and fears and tears to someone, and it was Fakir? She’s close. But she’s just not there yet.

In the Lake of Despair, here is what Fakir knows.

Duck, during that moment, was in an incredibly difficult position. She was forced to face her secret, selfish desires because at the end of the day, she isn’t the perfect, pure-hearted Princess Tutu. She’s a waddling, toddling duck who was cursed with the opportunity of a lifetime, which she accepted because she had nothing to lose, and couldn’t finish the deal because she wanted to keep it all.

Mytho was going to make Rue his princess. Duck wanted to be his princess. That sucks.

Duck was afraid of being alone again. Afraid of going back to being a regular old duck who doesn’t dance or go to school or have silly friends or a cat for a teacher. It’s horribly selfish and she knows it’s horribly selfish, but despite knowing that everyone would suffer should she not finish the story, she doesn’t want the story to end.

But this isn’t her story. It’s Mytho’s, isn’t it? It always has been.

Regarding Fakir’s love for her, this isn’t their story either. Duck isn’t in a position to be emotionally available for handling a confession. Whether she loves him back or not, romantically or otherwise, the two of them have a mission, and love will have to wait.

Here’s why I’m glad:

To choose not to confess is an act of love. It is! Fakir could have chosen to impose his feelings on her, to burden her with another thing to worry about while the weight of their known world was on her shoulders. To confess to her, to kiss her, to force her to consider him as a romantic partner, would have been selfish of him.

Instead, all he gives her is a promise. Not to be dramatic, but to this day, it is one of the most beautiful promises I’ve ever heard. It is one built upon unwavering faith and loyalty, and does not require a platonic or romantic label to be true.

And as Fakir dips her low, he takes her in. Duck’s eyes are closed, you may remember, so she might not realize how carefully he studies her face. This is truly his last opportunity to tell her while she’s still guaranteed to be human. They’re alone, they’re dancing, this is such a emotionally meaningful moment for both of them. “It’s just too perfect.”

But no, he won’t. Because he loves her

7. Wolfwalkers

The final installment to Caroon Saloon’s Irish Folklore Trilogy (preceded by The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea). Everything about the animation is breathtaking and mesmerizing and although it’s a film that’s easy to enjoy and just appreciate for the animation aspect alone, I adore everything that’s under the surface

6. Whisper of the Heart

All of Miyazaki’s “atmosphere” films are always a treat and this one’s my fav. Although the romance aspect is very whimsical - I appreciate how the film is honest about how harrowing it can be to have confidence in yourself while pursuing your creative interests

5. Hot Fuzz

Cops are a joke but this movie isn’t

4. Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse

If you haven’t taken the time to watch this just do it you actually won’t regret it whether or not you like Spider-Man and whether or not you like animation just please I promise i swEAR

3. The Intouchables

A French film based on a true story about the budding and unlikely friendship between a quadriplegic (who happens to be enormously wealthy) and someone who has full range of physical capability (and very not enormously wealthy). It’s a love story about platonic love and it warms my heart

2. Cloud Atlas

“The reincarnation of a soul travels through time in an exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.” - IMDb page for Cloud Atlas.

(side note although it has Tom Hanks & Halle Berry & Hugo Weaving it def has a problematic part that would’ve/could’ve been easily resolved by hiring Asian actors - if someone passes bc of that I get it & is extremely valid)

I haven’t been on tumblr for quite as long as a lot of people but over several years I’ve noticed this interesting gradual sorta,, shift in the general culture? that it went from this mostly depressed, nihilistic outlook where people would regularly joke about hating themselves and being hopeless and depressed, to a wave of vehemence of “STOP hating everything actually the world is Good and you deserve love!!!” type posts, to now, where those aggressive ‘PSAs’ have faded away and instead I regularly see people romanticizing simple things like stars and hot tea and rainy mornings, and waxing poetic about their friends, and just trying to put love out there. and I don’t know exactly what that means (someone who knows more than me could probably say something smart about generational expression and trauma or popular perception of mental health and whatnot), but I do know that it makes my heart very full to see people learn to love the world and themselves by extension, and a whole userbase adopting healthier coping mechanisms, and therefore teaching the younger users to do so as well. I might just be following different people, but I really do think we’ve grown. everyone has grown. five years ago it wasn’t unusual for the next post on my dash to be a scathing commentary on why nothing matters or an anon ripping into someone they barely knew or someone complaining about how pathetic their interests are. now I have mutuals who get excited and spam reblog art of cows and friends I see tagging each other in pictures of frogs and strangers writing paragraphs about how much I matter. it makes me happy. idk. just an observation I wanted to make. I think people are good and everyone’s just trying their best at the end of the day
