Trans Activist Agnes Torres Murdered in Puebla

Trans activist and respected counselor Agnes Torres Hernández was found dead this past Saturday near the town of Atlixco, Puebla. Reports indicate she was tortured before being killed.

Friends and supporters gathered to mourn and pay tribute to Agnes this evening in Puebla, the state’s capital city. Earlier today, the hashtag #AgnesTorres was a trending topic on Twitter, with thousands posting messages of support for Agnes, her family, and the LGBT community.

Former colleagues of Agnes Torres are demanding a thorough investigation and calling for a special department within Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission dedicated to cases of hate crimes against lesbians, gays, and transsexuals.

Amsterdam-based artist Cedric Laquieze (previously featured here) recently completed a fascinating new series of his exquisite taxidermy Fairies. These delicate sculptures are primarily composed of parts from many different insect species, but if you look closely you’ll notice bones, seeds and even a few scorpion parts as well.

Saw-shelled Turtle - Myuchelys latisternum

The Saw-shelled Turtle, Myuchelys latisternum (Chelidae), is a river-dwelling turtle endemic to eastern and north-eastern Australia. It has a moderately long neck, shell with a serrated hind edge (except in very old specimens), neck above with conspicuous, sharp-pointed tubercles, and usually two to four small white barbels under the chin.

This species is listed in many guide books and texts as Wollumbinia latisternum, however, the genus Wollumbinia is considered by several authors as a nomen illegitum, since the article in which the description of the genus Wollumbinia was published apparently did not meet the requirements of the current International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. So, the alternate available name, adopted by some authors, is Myuchelys.
