HUMAN BEING

In the dead of night 

As I’ve just cycled home 

Through the drizzle 

So characteristic of this 

City 

A blueprint for 

All the people 

Trying to be both small and big 

I am reminded of how beautiful 

How wondrous 

It is to be with someone 

How rare and precious it is 

To connect with someone 

Maybe if we weren’t all so 

Acutely aware

Of the lone

Idle 

Inescapable 

Nature of being a human in this city 

That you are relegated 

To being 

Doing 

Doing

Doing 

Making

Making 

Making 

Produce 

If only for one brief interlude

We experienced something 

That made us stop and ponder

Oh how wondrous it is 

To be human 

And not being 

To be more than 

The figurine trodding every step 

Closer to an interim bus stop 

That holds every potentiality 

Of reinforcing the very notion

And very fear

That we are to be but one step away 

From catching the bus we need 

From making the break we seek 

From missing the person we see

I see you 

All the trinkets and projects and remarks

Beyond the person you represent 

Into the person you occupy 

I wish I had the bravery I do now

Intermingled with liquid courage and 

Post-physiological-exhaust adrenaline

Into the light of day 

To say to you 

I enjoyed our interlude

The secluded haven 

We lathered ourselves in velvet so thick 

Sound became relative to time and space 

I think we found a creek in the crevice

And meandered, embodied, full 

For some time

We were being 

Human
