To be or not to be ?! Are you a mushroom expert ? Like #johncage ?! I need some advice. I spotted these two mushrooms in my garden this morning. Look like a puffball ? Or they some type of Agaricus ? Or they belong to Calvatia ? I’m confused throughly. And all these contain several species of edible and poisonous, both varieties. I’m left with a dilemma, eat or not to eat ? https://www.instagram.com/p/CdczYxeOyf_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Two years back, when lockdown started , I began with reassembling my fern collection. I had quite a few of them once , almost 25 years back . I had written about ferns in my columns at ‘The Sunday Observer’ and at ‘Inside Outside’.. And always had a passion full attraction for them. This time a friend , landscape expert and fern lover Chirag Dalvi gave me a few plants to start with.. one of them was Nephrolepis pendulum , many might mistake it to a Boston fern, and some might call it an elephant fern. Both are wrong . It is Nephrolepis pendulum , and once it grows to give out long fronds easily reaching lengths of 8' or more, one will be able to identify it . I got this massive size and majestic shape in less than 16 months. Many nurseries now offer the seedlings grown from the spores or some come from tissue culture. These are small tiny ones in 3 inch pots, however grow vigorously if attended well. #fern https://www.instagram.com/p/Cbf7SaMhjoA/?utm_medium=tumblr

Giant bird’s nest fern( Asplenium nidus ) grown to a specimen size in our garden having fronds of 3.5 ft to 4.5 ft each .. lustrous emerald green in colour and appears to be happy in semi shade location with no direct sun. I have not fed it with any chemical fertilisers so far except an occasional spray of an insecticide might have gone on it while spraying a few plants and trees next to it. I have given leaf mould mixed with cow and goat dung manure with home made compost rich in egg shells and fish bones. #fern #fernsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CZC_uPOB1KH/?utm_medium=tumblr

These two plants that I had grown to this almost specimen size in this monsoon and subsequent months are going to stay with my friend at his home at Kurla from today. I will meet them whenever I visit his home, his Mom is devoted gardener and I’m sure they will be happy with her. Epipremnum aureum, (also known as Devil’s Ivy, golden pothos, Ceylon creeper, hunter's robe, ivy arum, house plant, money plant, silver vine, Solomon Islands ivy, marble queen, and taro vine.)It is called Devil’s vine because it is almost impossible to kill and it stays green even when kept in the dark. It is not Philodendron variety. And the second one in the pictures is Monstera deliciosa.( Fruit Salad Plant. Window Plant. Swiss Cheese Plant. Mexican Breadfruit. Ceriman. Tarovine. ) Called 'Fruit Salad Plant' because the ripened fruit has a pineapple-banana odour and fruit salad taste (avoid eating it though because when it's not ripe yet, the fruit is very poisonous). Monstera has a thick trunk with "fish eyes" that grows on the ground. Wiki explains that ‘The fruit may be ripened by cutting it when the first scales begin to lift up and it begins to exude a pungent odor. It is wrapped in a paper bag and set aside until the scales begin popping off. The scales are then brushed off or fall away to reveal the edible flesh underneath. The flesh, which is similar to pineapple in texture, can be cut away from the core and eaten. It has a fruity taste similar to jackfruit and pineapple. The unripe green fruits can irritate the throat and the latex of the leaves and vines can create rashes in the skin, because both contain potassium oxalate: that is the reason why the fruits have to be consumed when the scales lift up.The black irritant fibres can be swept off with the application of a little citrus juice.’ ‘Dear friend , all the best with a devil and a monster! ‘ I told him ‘ close your eyes and wish anything , these two creatures will fulfill your wish ‘ https://www.instagram.com/p/CYyYcWtPNFk/?utm_medium=tumblr

This is Wrightia religiosa Variegata, Sacred Buddhist, Wondrous Wrightia. My plant is almost 40 years old , it came to me some 35 years back and survived through various home shifting , sometimes neglected and many a times went through serious accidents where it’s branches got broken . I had two of them , one died a few years back. Now I have two , one the original and other multiplied by planting a cutting. I am specially attached to few of my plants because they have seen a long portion of my life since my adolescence days, this one is one of them, it has seen me growing over several decades. And I have grown on kissing it’s fragrance early mornings and late nights while sitting with it in solitude. This is one of the most beautiful, exciting and useful plants among fragrant tropicals. A very fragrant, enchanting shrub, flowers are fruity scented, almost like jasmine and sometimes known as ‘water jasmine’ , used to create bonsai and grows well even in a shallow pot. https://www.instagram.com/p/CWMJGwLscNj/?utm_medium=tumblr

I had posted a few pictures of the plants affected by dreaded attack of white flies and a black fungus on my garden plants a few months back. The attack came when the coconut trees in the compound got the infection and its spread was rapid, moreover reaching insecticides to the top of the coconut plants was itself an impossible task. The disease grew multi fold and some of my specimen size delicate ferns got affected. I had separated them and began treating. Some responded some still struggling. One of the badly affected now is ready to pose for a photograph again, the black brown leaves have fallen down, new fronds are grown out, though the size is much smaller than the original, they look healthy, parrot green and hopeful. It’s indeed a great pleasure to see a weak and sick plant getting well and joining its family members . Still many awaiting to get well .., half of the terrace has been converted into a ‘rest & recoup ‘ ward. https://www.instagram.com/p/CVbKtA_M8bF/?utm_medium=tumblr

An insect or an animal, reptile or an aquatic, or an avian, an amphibian or a mammal, , a fish, a bird, a snake , a dog , a wasp, or even a robot, and the man or woman , whoever it may be; when seen in his or her most blissful moment(s), is always in awkward position. Sex is always tricky and complicated. Why do we all the living creatures have our pleasure organs located at remote and difficult places, and have to make intense efforts to make love. ? #sex https://www.instagram.com/p/CUDTpaKMLGK/?utm_medium=tumblr
