Chat with my partner
Today I had a phone call with Antonna (my partner for PIDP 3100 assignment 4) and we told each other some trends that were on our minds regarding Adult Education and our specific fields.
As a chef I told her how HR has made the restaurant scene more friendly, the increase of plant based foods like the Beyond Burger, as well as meal prep kits like Fresh Prep.
In Adult Education I talked about MOOCS and the freedom that online learning and Zoom have granted.
For trends in her field (Nursing) Antonna told me about Interdisciplinary education, bringing staff from different diciplines together to create a better team with bigger picture views and giving voice to those who were traditionally "lower" in the hierarchy, AKA under the Doctors. She also talked about anxiety management especially post pandemic.
In Adult Education Antonna told me about Constructivism, Critical thinking and self reflection, and how these are demonstrated in Nursing.

Micro credentials: a trend in online adult education
Micro credentials are fascinating because they allow you to study exactly what you want, without wasting time on irrelevant course material.
Forbes has an interesting article about this trend at this link : https://www.forbes.com/sites/frederickhess/2023/07/11/what-are-microcredentials-and-why-should-you-care/
From the perspective of a learner, this is exciting to me because I am interested in all kinds of different things, so if I can spend 1 week at a time and get an idea of what these various fields are that is really great.
On the other hand, if I look at it as someone who is hiring new employees, I have a hard time trusting a certificate that I know only took a week to earn.
All in all, I think this is a good trend, but I urge caution to anyone thinking that one or two weeks worth of certification will make you an expert in a new field. An expert at one specific task perhaps, but not give a big picture view and make you a master of your craft.

Here are some infographics showing the pros and cons of Micro credentials to help you weigh this issue for yourself.

Cons:
I hope these infographics demonstrate how people are divided on the subject of Micro credentials.

Interesting trend in my field
You have probably heard about "Farm to Table" and its a great thing!
This past year I have started working with the local school district in their meals program and found out about another great trend that you might not have heard about "Farm to School" which is even better!
In both of these trends, there are huge benefits, ranging from the basics of more healthy meals up to using less carbon for transporting foods and saving money on shipping. Farm to school is dedicated to reducing food waste, supplying healthy meals to growing children who need a source of energy to help them learn, and educating them and their communities about healthy food and food security.
Check out this article about the benefits of this amazing opportunity.

Meet me
I'm a small town boy, moved to the big city of Prince George.
I have my Red Seal in the Culinary Arts and am taking the PIDP (Provincial Instructors Diploma Program) through VCC (visit their Facebook page using the link below) so that I can pass the torch of knowledge to the next generation of Chefs.
Having grown up in a tiny town, I have a great appreciation for grocery stores and being able to access high quality ingredients any day of the week, but I also love garden fresh veggies straight from the dirt.
I hope that my passion for healthy local food is something that I can impress on my future students!

"Guy Fawkes Mask (Brian Chan)" by soozafone is licensed under CC BY 2.0.
Guy Fawkes was born to Edward and Edith in 1570 in York. (Gregory, 2021)
At that time, it was dangerous to be Catholic in England because several schemes and rebellious plots against Elizabeth the 1st were started by Catholics. It was so extreme that if priests were discovered leading service in secret, they were tortured and executed.
Guy was an upstanding protestant as a child until when he was 8 years old, his father passed away. After that his mother got remarried to Dionysius Bainbridge, who was catholic.
After the wedding, Guy became ensnared in his stepfather’s religious views and embraced them wholeheartedly. At the age of he joined the Spanish Catholics in their fight against the Protestant Dutch in the 8 years war.
In Spain Guy met an influential Englishman named Thomas Wintour who recruited him to a conspiracy back in England. By then Guy had honed his skills and bravery to a point where he was extremely valuable to this cause, and they put him to work in their plot to blow up the house of Parliament and assassinate King James the 1st in the hopes of creating a more religiously tolerant England.
This was referred to as the Gunpowder Treason.

The conspirators rented a cellar that extended underneath the Parliament building and tasked Guy with the job of filling the cellar with 36 barrels of black powder. His time in the military had given him experience with explosives and he was the one chosen to detonate these barrels as well. The explosion never happened because they were betrayed through an anonymous letter warning the authorities of the impending attack. Following this hot tip, guards searched the cellar and found Guy with all of his barrels of black powder, a fuse, a box of matches and a small lantern.
He was arrested, held and tortured for information and eventually hung, drawn and quartered. Some of the other plotters were shot and others were also executed at the gallows.

"Lewes Bonfire, Guy Fawkes effigy" is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0.
One year after the failed plot, King James the 1st decided to celebrate the fact that he hadn't been killed by having a special church service as well as a bonfire and fireworks. (Greenspan, 2023) This became an annual celebration and is known as Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Day. Over time this evolved to include children begging for “A penny for the Guy” and reciting rhymes, and the building and burning of effigies or models of Guy Fawkes. To this day there is an annual inspection of the Parliament building to ensure there are no attacks, as a part of the celebration.

"Guy Fawkes Mask" by Laurel L. Russwurm is licensed under CC BY 2.0.
You likely will recognize the likeness of his face from masks such as these, highly popularized by the film V for Vendetta.
Now, more than 400 years later, he is still thought of as a hero by some and a villain by others and now you can understand why "Gunpowder Treason should never be forgot"
So my question to you all is, was this a misled unfortunate man turned into a villain, or was he a hero fighting for a cause worthy of his sacrifice?
Happy November the 5th!
