Comic Book Character of the Day: Fantomex

Originally created by Weapon Plus Program, Fantomex was designed as the ultimate weapon against mutants. Possessing 3 brains and a minor healing factor, Fantomex (otherwise known as Weapon XIII) was practically immortal; even if one brain were destroyed, the second would take over his body and he would be able to function. Fantomex was raised in a man-made virtual reality called The World, and even after he had defected to the side of the mutants, he named himself the protector of his home. Although he is British by default, Fantomex identifies as French and goes by Jean-Phillipe. The closest thing he has to a friend is E.V.A., an external nervous system that serves as his ship and protection. She is able to change forms and size, though she is usually seen in her ship form. Whatever damage E.V.A. takes, Fantomex is able to feel as well, as they share a neurological and mental link.

He flees Weapon X and seeks sanctuary at X-Corporation, claiming to be a world famous thief on the run to Jean Grey and Professor X. Because he wears specially designed psychic dampening plates in his mask, no telepath is able to read his mind or control it. After his dealings with X-Corporation are complete, he uses his abilities to steal from high status museums, functions, millionaires/billionaires, and even meets up with Wolverine at one point to exchange important information.

After his dealings with Dark Reign, Nation X, and Second Coming, Fantomex is seen again with the new and improved X-Force, formed and run by Wolverine, funded by Warren (a.k.a. Archangel). The team consists of Wolverine, Archangel, Fantomex, Deadpool, and Psylocke, and it is their mission to take on the tasks that the X-Men dare not: take down enemies and erase them once and for all as hired assassins. 

After a chain of events dealing with a second Apocalypse, Otherworld, and Archangel that have driven the team to the edge of their morals and limit of their blood lust, the group is disbanded, but not after the death of one of their own and taking on of a familiar face to the group. During this time, Fantomex develops feelings for Psylocke, even though her romantic attentions are focused on Warren. It is not until Fantomex sacrifices himself to save her that Psylocke realizes how much he truly loved her, but by then it is too late; as the Skinless Man said, “A shame you have but the one heart.”

Even with his death, this is not the end of Fantomex. The link between him and E.V.A. is lost, but for the better; E.V.A. resumes a humanish form and strives to not only avenge her friend, but to find a way to bring him back from the dead. X-Force succeeds in resurrecting Jean-Phillipe, but at a cost:

His 3 brains, undamaged at the time of his death, were accidentally separated into 3 bodies representing a different side of his psychosis: the original Fantomex, and his clones, evil Weapon XIII and sweet Cluster. Interestingly enough, Psylocke leaves X-Force with Cluster and Fantomex and enjoys a few months of thievery, wine, and sex, that is until her affections spread to Cluster. Fantomex, jealous that Psylocke is enjoying her time with his female counterpart (would that be cheating?) brings good times to an end and severs his relationship with Psylocke by sleeping with Cluster (so he cheated on Psylocke with… himself? it gets confusing).

In the meantime, Fantomex MAX seems to take place before Uncanny X-Force but after X-Corporation. Fantomex is seen stealing information and rare items with E.V.A., who takes on a more humanistic form and even refers to a romantic, flirty relationship with Fantomex. A more mature view of Jean-Phillipe, you get a little bit more of a childhood back story as well as a better understanding of his dry, sarcastic wit and blunt nature. 

With the end of Fantomex MAX and Uncanny X-Force, Fantomex is in the most current run of X-Force under the Marvel NOW! campaign in a team with Pyslocke, Cable, and Marrow. Check out all of these series and get to know some of the other characters besides Fantomex!
