Maybe this was obvious and I'm just late to the party, but I feel like Lucanis takes Rook's advice in "Inner Demons" to heart—and not just for dealing with Spite.

When he says, "There's just so much. I can't see where to begin," Rook's advice is to "start small." Obviously in that moment he's talking about his trauma from the Ossuary, but imagine him later sitting in the pantry thinking about Rook.

He has never been in a real relationship; based on how you interpret the knife conversation, you could argue that he has only ever made one half-hearted effort at even attempting one. And now he's found someone that he wants in a way he hasn't before. He admits later that he was scared to want Rook. He's overwhelmed and doesn't know where to begin.

But then he remembers Rook's advice: "Start small." What small thing can he do to show Rook that he cares? Well, he was planning to make a nice meal for the team. Maybe he could serve Rook's favorite drink? And maybe he could make a dessert that pairs well with it. He'd make enough for everyone, of course, but maybe such a small thing, such a doable thing, is enough to be a start?

And it is. It is enough. He is enough. He doesn't have to force some grand, elaborate romantic gesture. He can just start with something small that works for him.

Can you imagine how he must have felt when Rook responded so favorably? He's starting to see a way out of his cage. He's starting to see that there is a future ahead for him (something that he struggled with even before the Ossuary).

He's starting to see that he might not just survive. He might actually live.
