Analysis: Las Vegas notches first-ever WNBA victory
Las Vegas, NV — The Aces had an encouraging showing in their home opener on May 27 against the Seattle Storm. However, they immediately followed that performance with an abysmal showing against that same Storm team. It raised skepticism about whether this Jekyll-and-Hyde, 0-4 Aces team could hang with the previously undefeated Washington Mystics. Not only did they deliver, they dominated: Aces wild.
Story of the game
The story of the game was the consistently spectacular play of A’ja Wilson, who absolutely dominated the paint on both ends of the floor. Her final stat line of 26 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks doesn’t even tell the whole story. The Mystics did not have an answer for her defensively and it lead to 18 free-throw attempts. The Aces also dominated on the glass, finishing with a 38-29 advantage.
For the Mystics, Monique Currie lead the way with 24 points. She did a lot of her damage at the line where she converted 11 times at the charity stripe. The Mystics struggled to maintain momentum, as every time it seemed they were poised to make a run they would find themselves in foul trouble. The Mystic had 5 different players with at least 4 fouls. This caused the bigs to struggle find rhythm throughout the game.
Tired legs
Both the Mystics and the Aces struggled mightily from the three-point line. Each team played the night before, and it showed. Short jumpers were a common theme as the two teams combined to go 5-30 from the behind the three-point line. Tired legs were certainly a factor and it’s no surprise that the winner of this game was won by the team that had the advantage inside. In a game where missed shots and tired legs reared its head, it was getting to the line that made the difference. The Aces finished with 40 free-throw attempts for the game, lead by A’ja Wilson’s 18 attempts.
Key to the win
Dearica Hamby was the closer for the Aces. Aces Head Coach Bill Laimbeer praised Hamby’s effort postgame, saying that her energy changed the game. She had 14 points in only 12 minutes, with 12 of those 14 coming in the fourth quarter. The Mystics made an effort to double-team Wilson in the post, allowing Hamby to take advantage. She made a number of big shots, including a three-point play to push the Aces lead back up to nine after the Mystics had cut it down to six with four minutes to play.
Going forward
This Aces team is young and exciting. It feels like they could be on the cusp of turning a corner. They’ve had showings where you can see the upside and potential, only to follow it up with head-scratching lethargic performances. Led by A’ja Wilson, the Aces have something — even if they don’t even know what it is yet. But Las Vegas now has had two consecutive positive performances at home against quality opponents. That is the first step in the right direction and shows signs that this team is still growing despite a 1-4 record.

330,000 visitors expected in Las Vegas over holiday weekend
The Las Vegas Strip. (Benjamin Hager/Las Vegas Review-Journal) @benjaminhphoto
Rising gas prices won’t stop visitors from coming to Las Vegas for Memorial Day, following a national trend of more people who plan to hit the road during the long holiday weekend that starts Friday.
About 330,000 people will descend on Las Vegas from Friday to Tuesday, making it the fourth most popular destination to kick-off the summer travel season, according to projections from AAA and the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Roughly 198,000 visitors will drive to Las Vegas, with the heaviest traffic concentrated along the Strip and in downtown Las Vegas, NDOT spokesman said Tony Illia said.
That’s a significant jump from the 104,000 vehicles that typically travel on Southern Nevada’s streets and highways on an average day.
Southbound Interstate 15 will be particularly congested from Las Vegas to Primm starting at 8 a.m. Monday, with the heaviest traffic anticipated from noon to 2 p.m. as out-of-town drivers head home, according to the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada.
Additionally, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, RTC spokesman Brad Seidel said.
From Friday to Monday, more than 527,000 airline passengers are expected to depart or arrive at McCarran International Airport, up 1.6 percent from the same period last year, airport spokeswoman Christine Crews said.
Nationally, AAA forecasts about 41.5 million people will take a trip this weekend, a five percent jump and the highest Memorial Day travel volume since 2005.
About 36.6 million of those travelers will drive to their destinations this year, even though gas prices continue to rise. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in the Las Vegas Valley was $3.29 on Wednesday, up 33 cents from a year ago.
Following the holiday weekend, a record 246 million airline passengers worldwide will take to the skies on U.S. carriers between June 1 and Aug. 31, a 3.7 percent jump from last summer, according to Airlines for America.
A few low-cost options will be available to tourists and locals wanting to avoid the traffic-clogged streets this weekend. The Las Vegas Monorail will get a $5 discount for two-day and three-day multiride passes through May 31 by visiting https://tix.lvmonorail.com/5off. Local residents can purchase a single ride fare for $1.
New and existing Lyft users can enter the cost “MEMORIAL 18” for a $5 discount on two rides between Friday and Monday.

Las Vegas breaks ground on homeless courtyard project

With a ceremonial crash, Las Vegas city officials on Thursday kicked off the next phase of a homeless resource center project.
An excavator tore through the roof of an old building on the property off Las Vegas Boulevard North where a permanent homeless courtyard is planned.
“It’s a starting point, not the end point, where homeless people can go to access services,” Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said.
The permanent courtyard will offer a range of services to local homeless people at Las Vegas Boulevard North and Foremaster Lane in an area of the city known as the Corridor of Hope, where homeless shelters are clustered and where there is widespread street homelessness.
A temporary courtyard with pop-up services has been operating in a pilot phase for more than a year, but Thursday marked the start of the city’s build-out to a permanent set-up. The existing buildings will be razed, and the $10 million construction project is slated finish by the end of 2019.
“It doesn’t matter if they’re stoned or sober, they’ll be able to come here and be safe,” Councilman Bob Coffin said.
The courtyard, modeled after a resource center spread across a campus in San Antonio, Texas, will continue to operate on the property next door while construction goes on. Services have been offered during the day, but the courtyard is expected to move to a 24/7 operation this summer, where homeless people will be able to sleep in an open-air but secure location.
The City Council is slated to vote in June on a contract with Southern Nevada CHIPs, for the nonprofit group to operate the courtyard.
The city sold nearly $11 million in bonds to fund the construction.

Homeless courtyard
— The permanent courtyard, slated to be finished by the end of 2019, will have new buildings with classrooms, shower and restrooms, an intake center, kitchen, mailboxes and pet kennel.
— Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2019, and is expected to cost $10 million.
— Since August 2017, the city has had 5,624 requests for services at the courtyard, including mental health, legal assistance, housing and job opportunities.

Las Vegas leaky apartment roof drives family crazy for months
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – A Las Vegas family says they have been dealing with a major leak in their roof for months and their landlord has been slow to respond.
Willie Grimes says his apartment located near Lake Mead and Hollywood Boulevards has suffered the leak since December 2017.
Grimes provided Contact 13 video of water coming through the ceiling of his second floor apartment in January during a storm. He says his three kids were forced from their room because of the water.
"They couldn’t even sleep in here, I had them sleep in the living room because it was soaked, the entire room, it was bad," said Grimes.
Grimes says he alerted his landlord by text message in January about the problem and action was taken soon after.
Grimes says the repairs were not enough and the leak worsened.
"There was stucco all over the carpet," said Grimes.
Grimes did his homework and found Nevada law is on the tenants side in this situation. As Contact 13 has reported, landlords must make appropriate repairs within 14 days once notified of the problem in writing.
Contact reached out to the apartment manager and he promised swift action. He blames the repair delays on a miscommunication. As of Tuesday, repairs were underway.

Libraries In Las Vegas Reducing Late Fees In Exchange For Food
LAS VEGAS, NV – If you forgot to return the last book you checked out of the library, you have two weeks to take that trivial afterthought and make a positive difference as part of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District’s Food for Though food drive.
For the remainder of the month of April, anyone with outstanding fines can have their fines reduced by donating food at any of the district’s 25 branches. For each packaged, non-perishable item brought in, fines will be reduced by $2. There is no limit to the number of donations that can be made, so if you have a bunch of peas that have been sitting in your cupboard for six months, bring them in. The LVCCLD will take all donations to the Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas.
The library district is hoping the food drive will bring back members who have been absent for a long period of time due to late fees. The district is also offering to replace any library cards free of charge.

Newspaper: Las Vegas hospitals quick to discharge patients
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas newspaper has found that patients with mental illness are often being discharged from hospitals too soon, resulting in many returning to emergency rooms or being sent to group homes.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the early hospital releases are indicative of the state’s scarce resources for treating mental illness, a lack of trained professionals and a shortage of hospital beds for patients who often can’t pay for care.
Law enforcement officials say Nevada hospitals are also releasing patients admitted on 72-hour medical holds before the hold has expired. Police, physicians or other health care providers order the hold for people who are unable to care for themselves or who threaten to hurt themselves or others.
Officials from multiple Las Vegas hospitals say physicians make the discharge decisions.

Building community in Las Vegas with Airstreams
In 2013, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh embarked on a $350 million plan to turn Las Vegas into the “coworking and colearning capital of the world.” He bought about 60 acres of land in the city’s beleaguered downtown, invested $50 million in small businesses incubators and $50 million in arts organizations, and hoped that the extra money would transform Vegas into the Silicon Valley of Nevada.
Size of development: One acre Number of Units: 15 tiny houses and airstreams, seven micro apartments Number of Residents: 31 Age Range: 6 to 45 Cost of Living: $1,200 a month Average Size of a Unit: Studios: 500 square feet; tiny houses and Airstreams: 200 to 250 square feet
So far, the rate of return on his investments—collectively called the Downtown Project— hasn’t reached the scale of his ambition. The most notable successes are the Life Is Beautiful music festival—which accounts for $77.7 million of the Downtown Project’s $86.6 million economic output and 64 percent of its job creation—and a community of tiny houses, Airstreams, and micro apartments called Private Residential at Ferguson’s Downtown.
Built on the site of a former motel, the development has attracted an eccentric mix of young residents, including musicians, Zappos employees (Hsieh lives there), families, and entrepreneurs.
Ferguson’s Downtown is a microcosm of the larger community Hsieh envisioned, and it’s all anchored by tiny houses:

Coalition: Nevada rental housing is least affordable in US | Island Packet
Rising housing costs have broken a 10-year-old record in Reno, and the most recent data shows Nevada ranks last among all states for providing affordable rental housing for its poorest families.
A report released this week based on 2016 figures also ranks Las Vegas last among U.S. metropolitan areas for the second year in a row in terms of affordable rental housing. It’s the fourth year in a row Nevada has finished last statewide in that category, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition.
The Reno/Sparks Association of Realtors says the combined median price for an existing single-family home in Reno and Sparks reached $370,000 last month.
That tops the previous record of $365,000 set in January 2006 during the height of the housing bubble.

Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, said the statewide ranking for affordable rental housing is attributable to Nevada’s small supply of subsidized housing, its abundance of low-wage jobs and the lasting effect of the nation’s housing crisis. The coalition advocates for public policy that assures people with the lowest incomes in the U.S. have access to affordable homes.
"Las Vegas, of course, was one of the areas most impacted by the foreclosure crisis and is a really good example of people losing their homes and becoming renters," Yentel told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The rental housing supply has not kept up with demand, she said. "That’s increased costs for everyone, and the lowest income people are impacted the hardest."
Titled "The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Homes," the coalition study used the latest available U.S. Census survey data to identify rental housing that is affordable and available for "extremely low income" families. The federal government defines such families as making 30 percent or less of an area’s median income.
For a family of four in the Las Vegas metro area, that’s about $24,600 or less a year.
The study assumed that for housing to be considered affordable, a family should spend no more than 30 percent of its income on rent and utilities.
Las Vegas had 10 affordable rental units for every 100 extremely low income households. Nevada had 15. The national average was 35.
Las Vegas-Henderson was the only Nevada market detailed in that report.
In Reno-Sparks, prices are expected to "inch up" this year as the area enters residential real estate’s busy spring and summer season, according to Doug McIntyre, president of the Reno/Sparks Association of Realtors.
"The good news is there has been a 10 percent increase in new listings (at 532 units)," he told the Reno Gazette Journal. "With spring approaching, it’s traditionally a time when more people put their homes on the market."
Tight supply resulting from near-zero construction during the recession combined with strong demand from buyers has fueled a housing crunch in Reno marked by skyrocketing home values.
Housing supply for Reno-Sparks, which calculates how fast the current supply will sell out at the current pace of sales minus new inventory, is at just 1.3 months compared with 2.7 months a year ago.
Supply is especially limited at the lower end or entry-level part of the market. The Biggest Little City closed last year and opened 2018 with fewer than 100 existing single-family homes in the market priced below $300,000. Reno’s median household income, which has hovered between $50,000 and $55,000 in recent years, is also unable to comfortably afford the area’s median home price.

Blink-182 Announce Las Vegas Residency
What’s my age again? On the same day all these albums I loved in college are getting nostalgia tours, one of my most beloved bands from my early teenage years just announced a Las Vegas residency. That’s right, Blink-182 fans: You are old!
Mall-punk has after all become a form of classic rock, so it makes a certain sort of sense that Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker, and Tom DeLonge Matt Skiba will be going the way of their TRL-era contemporaries Britney, Xtina, and J-Lo. Somehow, the logic behind this reminder of death’s inevitability doesn’t make it any less chilling.
The plan seems to be to lure wealthy former Warped Tour ticket-holders to Sin City for weekend getaways marked by gambling and musical toilet humor. Blink will play 16 dates in the Pearl Theater at the Palms comprising a series of eight two-night stands in May, June, October, and November. They’re calling it Kings Of The Weekend, named for a song on their 2016 album California. IMO they should have called it Built This Pool, but as we’ve already covered, sometimes cold-hard reason wins out.
Tickets go on sale this Friday, 3/23 at 10AM PT via blink182vegas.com. Below, watch a super-corny trailer and see the dates.
