If you're a writer you're supposed to write a lot of bullshit. It's part of the gig. You have to write a lot of absolute garbage in order to get to the good bits. Every once in a while you'll be like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time writing bullshit," but that's dumb. That's exactly the same as an Olympic runner being like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time running all those practice laps"

imo the only writing advice that i will ever give anyone and that matters to me is “read stuff you like and let it inspire you”
to a lesser degree, indulge in other art you like (music, animation, video games, tv etc.) and let it inspire you, too…
but mostly just— read things you like.
thats it. style doesn’t matter, grammar doesn’t matter, what words you use or do not use (like ‘said’) in your writing does not matter… if you read things you like and get inspired by it, you will be more likely to make art YOU are proud of, regardless of anybody else’s opinions or advice 😊🩷
i really don’t like writing advice posts because for all of the advice in the world, you’re going to find a million successful authors who defy that advice completely. so who is this advice appealing to?? only one specific set of readers…
there’s plenty of others readers who clearly could give less than a fuck about whatever rules that person is trying to feed you
reading a cormac mccarthy book reinvigorated my love for writing, for example, because he uses sprawling insane prose that completely ignores all known laws of grammar and punctuation but it fucking WORKS. reading poetry is one of the first things that made me fall in love with writing for a similar reason. they ignored all the rules my lit teachers taught me and most of the time, it made the work more effective. it definitely made it more personal.
re-discovering that I don’t have to follow any rules and I can do whatever the fuck i want reminded me why I love literature!!
