Another cloud shot from the earlier sunrise session. I’ve processed this one about five times while trying out different software. This comes down to an extended manipulation in Lightroom, with a hint of color toning.
I find I prefer the “manual” adjustment of the RAW output to any of the presets I’ve discovered so far. But then I have a tendency to fiddle with the minutiae, in any of my media.
Original image shot with a full red filter.

Playing with the “split tone” option in Adobe Lightroom. It’s a not really good color RAW image that was processed as black and white, pushed pretty hard, and then toned toward the purple grey I have seen on older silver prints. Said tint is not meant to represent the look of a silver print but merely to evoke a certain aesthetic.
I was also struck by the similarity of the composition to a Japanese ink painting, so in some ways the processing went after a more graphic look. I think it’s moderately successful in that context. It was an abysmal color print.

Compare this to yesterday’s post of the same original. I am experimenting with Lightroom and manipulation of the RAW “negative”. Certainly a lot easier than it was back in the darkroom days.

Back to black & white. Often seems the best choice for conveying a sense of loss or nostalgia. May just be me.

In case you thought I was just going to show black and white photos. Color can be startling. This is not “enhanced”. I am pleased that I was lucky enough to catch this moment in the light.

Clouds at sunrise. The objective was to figure out how to get all the details with the bright backlight. Captured with a red filter and processed in Lightroom.
