These are 10 photos from my favorite photographers. I am going to talk about each of them with very little logical organization throughout this paragraph so sorry in advance. Each of them has a unique style, and even though some aspects of their work overlaps, I can tell their style from one another. Some interesting methods and styles include Gregory Crewdson’s. It may seem like he is just in the right place at the right time for his photos, but they are actually meticulously planned like movie sets. Most of his images cost upwards of a million dollars to make and he makes most of them in small town Massachusetts. Crewdson places every detail within the image and he does not even hit the shutter button on the large format camera used to take the images when they are ready to be captured. William Eggleston is the pioneer of color photography and the first photographer to take color photography from a tourist’s commodity to the world of fine art. His contributions paved the way for Steven Shore, who was another early color photographer who traveled America for many series of images that captured the mundane throughout the country. Robert Frank also travelled America, but his work was not received well. Frank was a Swiss photographer who travelled the country on a Guggenheim grant and photographed mostly the racial tensions of 1950′s America. People were outraged at the foreigner’s commentary on American life, but The Americans, has since become one of the most beloved photography books of all time. Lewis Baltz was a member of the New Topographics movement in California in the 1970′s. The movement basically consisted of minimalism and flat compositions to make comment on the rapidly developing areas of Southern California and the effect that man had on nature while developing these areas. Alec Soth is a more recent photographer who’s work varies over a wide array of subjects, but I like his portraits the most. His photo I have chosen here is one of my favorites of the whole bunch. Val Timmermans and Natalie Christensen are some of my favorite photographers that I follow on instagram. They have similar styles, but they are both different and unique in their own ways. Patrick Joust and Brad Ziegler are both photographers from Baltimore. Brad was my high school photo teacher and I love his work. Patrick Joust is considered a master of night photography and his night work is extremely impressive. There are few that can manipulate film as well as him at night. Sorry that whole paragraph was a mess. Bad writing but great photography.

TINKER HATFIELD I knew of Tinker for a long time but I really saw the full scope of his work when I watched his abstract special. He designed almost all of the original Jordan’s for Nike and other influential shoes such as the Air Max and the Air Hurrache. Tinker’s design process is very meticulous and seems more like a plan then a sketch. His ability to focus his ideas and plan them from start to finish is very impressive and is something I hope to improve upon in the future.

HENOCK SILESHI HK is the lead designer for the group BROCKHAMPTON. He’s worked with many artists including Post Malone and A$AP Ferg, but his work with BROCKHAMPTON and Kevin Abstract is my favorite. His approach to typography and his ability to mix old and new aesthetics is very impressive and he is someone I look up to in the design world.

Penn Medicine
I enjoyed our trip to penn medicine. It made it clearer what a job as an actual graphic designer would look like. Some of the talking was a bit boring at times but the prospect of free healthcare is a big plus. As I am in the midst of watching the office I expected at least one office funny guy. (Or girl) I encountered none which was a little disappointing. Overall a good experience and it was nice to find out that you will learn much more on our way through school and that the Drexel alumni network is so helpful when searching for jobs.

I chose the website for washington DC because I live close to it and I enjoy going there. The website is well designed visually and also is very easy and intuitive to use. It is incredibly easy to search for things to do, neighborhoods to visit, places to eat, and places to stay. Although I am familiar with the city the website makes it very easy for someone who has never been to the city before to find their way around.

I chose this book with the early photographs of Lewis Baltz. The book includes his prototype images. Baltz is a member of the New Topographics movement from the early 1970s. The New Topographics movement mainly focused on the banal nature of the man made and its impact on the landscape. Baltz’s compositions are very flat and use high contrast. I did a project in high school where I had to mimic Baltz’s style and I included those images as the last 2.

These 10 examples of fashion design interest me because they are all based in graphics. Most of them use a collage method to achieve their look and they all use color combinations that are pleasing to the eye. I like these designs because they’re things that aren’t the most difficult to make, but they still look good and accomplish their purpose. A few of them use their prints on materials that are out of the ordinary such as denim shirts and soccer jerseys to make them even more interesting

Time Management
I do not manage my time well. I usually forget about most of my assignments until right before they are due. The exception is my design work. That is the most important to me and I always spread that work out because it is far too much to do in one day. I think this strategy is successful because I have gotten all my projects done on time and I usually have plenty of time to spare.

I picked these 10 album covers for my favorite design of 2017. I think they all are very well designed because I think that a good album cover makes me want to listen to the music before I even know what it is. (maybe thats just me) I really enjoy all of these because I think you can really do whatever you want when making an album cover. It can be a full painting like the Wiki cover. or something as simple as taking a photo of yourself and putting letters above it that are not even the same font, or maybe even putting magnets on a fridge and taking a photo of it. Thats why I enjoy album covers, they can be as simple or complex as the artist wants but they all serve the same purpose.

Hobbies In Philly
A hobby I enjoy is photography. A place I found is Photo Lounge, on Chestnut street (https://www.myphotolounge.com/) . I have had a few rolls of film developed at photo lounge and I hope to continue my hobby of film photography in Philadelphia with the help of a cheap film lab nearby.

Alumni Response
I learned that there are many different aspects of graphic design in the real world. I was surprised that the alumni thought that drexel was just as difficult as their time at Drexel (in some aspects). I was also surprised to learn that environmental design is a thing and also that it is so prominent in Philadelphia. I can see myself in a similar job in a few years but I don’t think I would end up in environmental design because I do not find it incredibly interesting to do even though I think the end result is interesting.

Paula Scher Documentary
After watching the documentary I was surprised about how much work her collective can make. It showed many of their works and all the ones that were shown were very complex, but ultimately simple because a lot of Paula’s work is part of big public campaigns and they have to be understood by lots of people. My favorite work that she showed was her painted maps of the United States that were filled with data as the background such as demographic and zip codes. I liked these the best because when I look at it I really think about why and how she makes them. Also it made me think about when people in my design class complain about painting and how my teacher tells us that we are going to miss it someday. Paula Scher and Pentagram rebranded The New School recently, which includes the Parsons School of Design. Paula and her team created a font called Neue which came in three widths which are randomly generated by an algorithm. I think that her process is very natural and organic. She usually begins by sketching in the back of a taxi, and that design will progress naturally. Paula’s workspace makes me feel good about myself because my work area is a mess, but so is her’s even as one of the most successful designers in the world.

My favorite color combination is the yellow brown and white record. I like this one because brown and yellow are both strange colors, but when put together I think they look good together. (although I have seen this this record described as both “gross” and “vomit pressed into a vinyl”) I like this color combination also because the record is translucent and it looks better or worse depending on how much light shines through it.

My group went to old city to go to a restaurant called Mac’s Tavern which is owned by Rob McEllehney from the show It’s Always Sunny In Philadelpia. We took the blue line from 34th down to 2nd and the restaurant was about a 2 minute walk from the station. We sat down and the waitress gave us the cocktail menu and then seemed really surprised that we were not drinking. We ordered and then the Eagles game started and some people sitting at the bar started getting rowdy. Chicken quesadilla was a 7/10 onions were a little strong. After eating we walked down the street and right into a veterans parade and we walked along the route for a while and saw I think every high school ROTC group in the Philadelphia area and then got back on the train at 8th street. It was a lot of fun to get off campus and explore a new place with people I don’t know well.

1. Single artwork for King Krule’s Rock Bottom by Jack Marshall
2. Tour poster for A$AP Mob’s “Too Cozy Tour”
3. Tour poster for The Garden’s west coast tour
4&5. Illustrations by Matt McCormick
6. Illustration for the band Trash Talk by John Davies
7. Illustration by George Greaves
8. Tattoo by @wan_tattooer on instagram.
9. Steve Lacy concert poster (I know its much of an illustration but i like the way its designed)
10. Mac Demarco baseball card given out at his show at the Mann Center.
My favorites out of this bunch are the two by Matt McCormick, especially the one that uses the Marlboro logo and the cowboy. I love the way that McCormick uses the recognizable branding of a cigarette company combined with a cowboy and a burnt cigarette and the saying “dont let the past remind us of what we are not now”. I think that the cigarette imagery and the cowboy really bring a sense of loneliness to the illustration. I really like that one, I think all its elements combine to bring a powerful feeling to the piece.

Companies in order:
1. Ticketfly
2. Redbull
3. Kansas City Chiefs
4. Bronze 56k
5. Sprint Photo Chemicals
6. Kodak Ektachrome
7. K2
8. Ilford Film
9. La Croix
10. Dertbag
I like all of these logos because they are simple, but still distinct from one another. Almost half of the logos I chose are very bold and high in contrast being that they are all in black and white. I like the contrast of simple black and white logos (maybe Ive been brainwashed by design I who knows), but If I was designing a logo I don’t think that I would stick to just black and white. I think that color combinations can go a long way as well. Both the Chiefs logo and the Red Bull logo use red white and yellow and I think those three colors work well together to make a very compelling logo. I think that my favorite of the bunch is the logo for Kodak Ektachrome film which has sadly been discontinued although rumors have been swirling that Kodak is planning a comeback of the film due to the recent intrest in the film market. Whether the film returns or not I think that the vintage look of the color combinations and the shape of the logo make it an excellent one and I hope to see more of it soon.
