Response to the Site & Client Brief
How does my creative concept respond to and activate the site?
The concept is site-specific, and encourages all to experience what Northshore has to offer. With ever-changing plants, the gardens provide a fresh experience, allowing for constant rejuvenation. With its ability to incorporate itself with locals festivals and light shows, it is a space for every occasion.
Does it reflect the client's objectives, vision and brand?
The concept offers a unique experience specific to Northshore and its legacy. It's an open access area, with importance on natural lifestyle and environment.
The concept tackles Challenge No. 2. Its unique attachment to Australia, and Northshores cultured history, could be an experience for all that visit the Olympic Village from all across the globe.

Originality
Is my concept site specific?
Boat gardens have been replicated many times in peoples home gardens, this concept will thrive in its connection to its location and history. The boats were chosen for Nautical history, and the plants are all native plants, making it site specific.
Can my project be easily produced or replicated without my creative involvement?
This concept can be replicated without my involvement. It should be easy for anyone to replicate or upkeep. My concept was designed to be easily maintained, and would not often need to be repaired or replaced.

Audience Engagement, Ethics and Diversity
Who is my target audience?
My target audience are younger generations, between 5-15 who would attend Northshore via an excursion with school, or with their parents as a day outing. They are at a key learning and stage of their life, perfect time to learn about the history of the lands that they stand on, as well as to engage with the world and nature around them. They learn best by seeing, hearing, and exploring (Raising Children Network, 2019), therefore, an interactive garden would be an engaging learning experience.
Can my project attract a wider audience?
With Northshores key demographics being those who value exploring and enriching their life, I feel that many of their existing customers would find the introduction of an educational garden very interesting and engaging. As well as newcomers.
It would allow many people to explore Northshores cultural history, whilst walking through a scenic environment. Being flat and paved, it also allows for an accessible experience for all users.

Feasibility, Sustainability & Enduring Significance
Is my project a one-off, or can it be refreshed, adapted, delivered in stages, or on multiple occasions?
My project can be active all year round, with possibly the occasional plant being switched out during off seasons. As certain plants are only blooming during certain months, they may be swapped out with other plants. This activation can be adapted to nighttime events similar to The Enchanted Garden in Brisbane.
Does it need upkeep or maintenance?
The Gardens will require small upkeep, such as watering, weeding, or trimming to keep them clean and neat. Also swapping the plants out.
As the boats are wooden, they may require upkeep depending on how they withstand the weather. Constant exposure to water can ruin a wooden boat due to rot (Coeur Custom, 2022).

Idea: The Garden
I have decided that I will be turning the space (highlighted in pink) into a garden walkway, with garden bays made from old timber boat frames and ponds of water in the middle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After assessing the space using a map with a 10m measurement mark on it, I have discovered that the space is approximately 50m x 30m.
Tumblr media
Because the area is already grass, I will not have to returf the entire place, saving on costs.
The Boats
Each one of the boats within my activation will contain a local plant from the area. Each boat will have a QR code stuck to the side of them, this will direct to a website including information about the plants, as well as information on nautical or Indigenous history.
Each boat will only be a small rowing boat, such as the one featured below. This allows of space conservation, as well as affordability, as boats are quite expensive.
Tumblr media
Boat 1
The Wax Flower, a bright flower that can sit at one of the entrances to the garden and acts as a fun colourful introduction to what will come.
Tumblr media
Boat 2
The Grevilla plant, a colourful fun plant that will bring a sense of fun and liveliness to the garden. It can also bloom all year round.
Tumblr media
Boat 3
The Australian Honeysuckle (Banksia), is a plant that can live within shade, but thrives under a more sunny location. It will provide a nice pop of colour to the garden.
Tumblr media
Boat 4
The 'egg and bacon' plant, a colourful, fun flower, with a comedic name.
Tumblr media
Boat 5
The 'Aussie Box', a small shrub with lilac flowers that bloom throughout spring and summer. These plants were chosen as they are popular within seaside and coastal areas, making them perfect to be beside the river.

Location
I believe the best places for these nautical exhibits would be along the riverside of the Maritime Green; to keep the green hills for a public space for people
The area's I am considering for my idea's have been highlighted in Blue.
Tumblr media
I had considered replacing the Orange area with the large ship hull to replace the currently existing stage, and turning it into an amphitheatre that can double as a public space when not being used for events. It could be used by working with local artists or workshops to hold classes about the parks indigenous or maritime history.
However, I have discovered that they are massively out of my price range, and may not be a viable solution for this activation. So instead I will opt to create a local maritime themed garden, using smaller boats instead.
Although I believe the amphitheatre idea would be a much more engaging and interactive use of the space, it is just too costly and difficult to try and get an estimate for.

Idea: Integration of Boats and Nature
This pavilion by a South Korean architect made from the Hull of an old ship has inspired me. The blending of the ships hull with plants and spaces for people to gather, could work well within the site. I would love to combine ship inspired architecture, or even old ships similar to are, with Indigenous artwork and plants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd love to create something that becomes a landmark. It would offer a place to gather for locals, but also an intriguing view for those on the river.
Having a unique landmark within Northshore could create buzz, and become a destination that would bring visitors.
If the large ship was too difficult to acquire, smaller boats may also be utilised, turning them into smaller gardens, and seating areas for the public.

Potential Activation Notes + Ideas
General Notes
Rather than being an open space with barely any shade or tree cover, I'd like a space that feels lively and exciting.
I'd like the space to become a place for people to escape from their job and embrace the relaxing space that is the waterfront.
I'd like to implement a lot more greenery and local indigenous plants found within the area, such as Yerrol vines, a vine that was used in hut-building and other constructions within the local indigenous communities (Northshore 2023a).
It should also be accessible for all, meaning the industrial architecture should include ramps.

Notes for Potential Activations
Some key things to consider when creating this space:
Will need an activation that can operate consistently throughout the week, during the day, during the night?
Appeal to outgoing individuals, and those that value enjoying new experiences
The activation should appeal to both locals, as well as tourists
Needs to integrate with the natural landscape, and natural lifestyle of the area
Potential Issues:
An activation that is permanent/ consistent could prove to be expensive.
Appealing to locals during the day could be difficult, with many working 9-5's, or youths being at school
Could be at the mercy of storms, blaring sun, or other environmental factors
With very little other commercial areas out near Northshore, many people will have to commute to make their way to the space.

Excursion to Northshore - 2/8/2023
First Impressions
Being quite far from the city, it's a very quiet area, with not a lot of road or vehicle noises aside from the occasional noise.
Accessible via both car and public transport.
The area is mostly flat, with a prominent hill on the maritime green.
Quite lifeless throughout the day, although the greenery and riverfront are nice.

Community Engagements and Partnerships Notes
Eat Street:
1 million people a year
Open on weekends (opportunity for weekdays?)
Wants to expand the type of people that come to the site
Eat Street is Northshores biggest and main attraction
Eat Street has helped Northshore become known for its inventive and quirky food scene, as well as a place of celebration (i.e. parties, concerts, and weddings), which harkens back to the cultural connections that the Indigenous communities once had with the land Nortshore now stands on.
Other Existing Partners Include:
Flipside Circus
Vaxxas
Team Arrow
Hackerspace Brisbane
Applied Mining Technologies
Northshore wants ideas that connect and reach out to other precinct partners to draw visitation and build awareness.
