STORY TIME!

I’ve been here. It’s just as neat as the pictures depict. There’s also a graveyard from the early 1800s which is 1000% spooky & 1000% awesome.

So I’m walking through Bannack with my dad on an overcast afternoon two years ago when the faint notes of a piano float past us, carried on the breeze. We look at each other with mutual expressions of “we don’t believe in ghosts but also we cannot deny we hear a piano playing in this otherwise abandoned place”. 

We follow our ears to an abandoned house at the far end of “Main Street”. Inside, we meet Jay, an older transgender woman who plays us about five songs on this beat-up-but-functioning piano. She then tells us her life story, which is as heart-breaking as it is fascinating (she taught herself piano in the wake of the traumatizing electric shock therapy she was forced to undergo for being trans in the 60s). She now lives a quiet life in a nearby ‘town’ (population: 20) with a cadre of cats and spends her free time in this abandoned town, playing music for the ghosts.

I’m still not entirely sure Jay herself wasn’t a spirit who had somehow slipped into our world from the next to give us a free concert on this cloudy, rainy afternoon in Bannack, Montana.
